5.0 out of 5 stars Great pianism, 14 Jan. 2013

Performance is here on one of the greatest pianists of our time. Argerich catches all the fire and pathos in what is some of the greatest piano music ever. This is self recommending for all pianophiles.

One of the greatest pianists of our time in Beethoven. Tremendous playing. Add this to your collection ass there are many wonderful felicities. The sheer joy of the playing and the energy is breathtaking. No 2 is the best since Serkin and Kempff - and matches these two.

4.0 out of 5 stars Masterly playing, 13 Jan. 2013

Masterly playing from the Composer, one of the greatest of all pianists. The recording is, of course, primitive, which does limit the enjoyment. But we must be grateful to have a record of this great man's playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Towering Performance, 10 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This single disc is a recital Richter gave in 1975 at the Festival Hall, London. I listened to it on the radio at the time. I was envious of my in-laws who were actually at the concert. The whole concert is on the disc. There is a simply tremendous performance of the Beethoven Hammerklavier which must be one of the greatest ever committed to disc. Richter's control, drama, sense of line are all incredible. Unfortunately the disc does not have room for the encore he played at the time which was to repeat the final movement of the Hammerklavier. There was a lot of comment made about it at the time but it has not found its way onto this disc which is produced by ICA. The rest of the recital is tremendous so the disk remains a must have for Beethoven and Richter enthusiasts. Or simply for lovers of great piano playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dramatic and Satisfying, 9 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Beethoven: Fidelio (Audio CD)
This has always been a favourite version of Fidelio with me. Karajan misconducting is highly dramatic yet he is also able to relax for the more beautiful scenes such as the Canon Quartet. The playing of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has almost a supernatural beauty which is breathtaking. The cast is generally superb and quite up to any other on disc. Some critics have been sniffy about this performance but I rather think it is because they are on the anti-Karajan bandwagon rather than because of the quality of the performance. It really is superb. There are other ways of doing this opera but HvK presents a good middle way between the period performance and the monumental Klemperer approach. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some compensation, 9 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have never been able to go to Lugano to hear this festival. It would cost a lot of money and time. However through this inexpensive box we can at least hear the performances as they were given. There is some terrific musicmaking here by Argerich and her friends. The great lady herself Performs one of her party pieces, the Ravel concerto, with great aplomb. There is also a wonderful performance of the Beethoven violin sonata number eight. Standard classics and more offbeat numbers come together here to make a very enjoyable time of life musicmaking. It's as if the performers are playing for their own enjoyment and asking people to join them in listening. At their very reasonable price people should not hesitate in investing in these discs even if some of the music is a bit offbeat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great playing - lousy packaging, 6 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have just received a copy of the Lugano concertos which is a compilation of Martha Argerich in concert at her Swiss festival at Lugano. Although most people will have at least some of these recordings this set is well worth getting for the fabulous playing of Argerich live. The orchestral playing is a bit routine but this is more than made up for by the sparkling piano playing. The concertos are really do crackle with energy and fizz. The concertos include Beethoven one and two, Liszt 1, Schumann, Bartok 3 and Prokofiev 1&3. There is also a great performance of the Poulenc Concerto for two pianos and Mozart triple concerto. The fourth disc is interesting as it features works by Schubert, Brahms, Stravinsky and Milhaud.
The playing is really first-class - something I cannot say for the packaging which is absolutely terrible. It is supposed to be a limited edition Deluxe set but it looks as though it has been designed by some trendy person who does not collect CDs themselves. Instead of a box we have a 8 x 5 book in a slipcase which is extremely inconvenient as it does not fit onto a CD shelf in any way. The book is beautifully printed but has an absolutely lousy essay which gives no thoughts to the performers or the music. There are also no texts or translations for the vocal numbers which are included in the set. It is all very annoying but I would still recommend these discs wholeheartedly for the music on them. Argerich is fab!
So five stars is for the music on the discs. Pity about the packaging!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wondrous Playing, 26 Dec. 2012
This review is from: The Art Of Geza Anda (Audio CD)
Here is playing by a true master of the piano, seemingly from another age. Anda had a fantastic technique and an aristocratic manner at the piano. He was also a very individual interpreter as can be heard from his performances of Beethoven and Schubert on these discs. However, as I found the playing, though uncoventional at times, shed new light on the works concerned, this did not worry me. After all, who wants to record a piece just like everyone else? And the playing is just sublime.
The Chopin and Liszt are both good but the highlight for me is Anda's playing of the Schumann works - two discs of it. Absolutely fabulous performances which are up there with the very best of the Schumann playing of the twentieth century. At just under a tenner these four discs represent amazing value. Worth it just for the Schumann discs alone. Pianophiles should not hesitate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chopin on fir, 11 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Cziffra was perhaps the greatest pianistic technician of the last century, with a jaw-dropping technique. He was initially lauded as a reincarnation of Liszt but eventually fell victim to a particularly vicious and vacuous critical clique who drove him into self-doubt. Cziffra himself wrote of these talentless morons: 'Personally, with very few exceptions, I have never come across a critic able to do other than condemn as a means of showing off his piranha-like erudition – unless the prey is too big for him, in which case he is quick to acclaim the victor. These carrion beetles of the mind, and they are legion, are easily recognized by their boundless pride and pathetic intellect.'
Perhaps nowhere was the savagery felt than in Cziffra's Chopin. I bought these discs to test out the naysayers but am pleased to report that Cziffra presents Chopin on fire. If you value elegance above all then look elsewhere, but I much prefer this to some of the faceless and sentimentalised Chopin that all is too easily mistaken for taste today.
I have thoroughly enjoyed these discs. Just listen to the Etudes and be amazed. This is Chopin on fire!
