Henry Goes To the Big City: A Lesson In Unconditional Love (The Adventures of Max Magee Book 1)
Henry Goes To the Big City: A Lesson In Unconditional Love (The Adventures of Max Magee Book 1)
Price: 1.83

4.0 out of 5 stars A book that demonstrates God’s love, 23 May 2014
This is a simple story, examining how Max, a child, reacts to a movie he loves. The movie is about a mouse called Henry. He has nine brothers and sisters and gets fed up with all the chores he has to do. He decides to run away to the big city, because he wants an exciting life.

There are challenges along the way and Henry is expectant about the adventures ahead. This is not how it turns out because city life has unexpected dangers. He races home and after a long trip arrives and is welcomed by his family.

Max watches the movie and then has dinner with his mum and his prayer and comment make it clear that he appreciates his family and his home.

At the end of the story there are questions, a Bible verse and a prayer. I have two areas of concern. The first relates to the age group 0-5 years. This is a lovely story with some deep meaning, appropriately expressed so I believe it would be wasted on children under 3. I’d recommend it for 3-6 year olds, depending on their level of understanding of abstract thoughts.

The other area that sticks out for me is the graph where Max is asked to pray for the food. It shows Henry realizing that city life is not for him, and missing his family. This is in the middle of the movie so doesn’t make sense. I’d have preferred to see Max and his mum together. I know that I am very specific in seeing any lapses in continuity, often that others do not notice.

The story is certainly a reflection of a simplified version of the prodigal son. It demonstrates that Henry’s family are delighted he returns. If sharing with older children it allows discussion about how every family member has a way to contribute to the family, even if the chores are dull.

This book shows the value of family, this is an area that is often lacking from young children’s books. I have offered my honest review in exchange for a free copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Christian story, 9 May 2014

This is a well written, gripping story with interesting characters based in small town America in the 60’s. The characters develop as the story progresses and difficult issues are dealt with in a sensitive way. Biblical truths are woven throughout in a way that enhances the story. Church life is examined and some of the challenges are examined.

The main character is a young girl, Jocie, who is brought up by her preacher dad who has a challenging history, and only temporary preaching work. A great Aunt shares the house and is rigid in her views and her forgetfulness over domestic chores makes Jocie have to take on more domestic responsibilities.

The story shows how God answers prayers but not always as expected and although there may be initial concerns He always knows best and transforms many difficult situations. The chracters have many challenges but have support from heaven and earth.

It is inspiring and delightful. I would highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good journal but old fashioned text verses, 25 April 2014

The quality of the journal is great, well bound and a lovely text on the flexi-cover. It was slightly small than I expected, its not A5. The paper is good quality and accepts fountain pen ink really well. The only thing that stopped it getting 5 stars was that the verse at the bottom of each page is from the King James version. Sometimes that is fine but others the language is stilted and I check it in a modern version.

Brenda Barrett has produced a great book that explores the challenges of adultery in a sensitive way. Her characters are beautifully written so they are all believable and their motivations are clear, without becoming two stereotypes. It is so easy for an author to rely on set beliefs and not delve deep into the longings of people's hearts. What makes this book five star for me is the way that God is interwoven through it. There are no glib spiritual solutions offered but the amazing way God can help people to reach their best in Him, despite their mistakes. Well worth reading!

This is a fine example of a good story with characters who develop and interwoven through it all is the wonderful nature of God. Hallee writes well and the reader wants to find out how it all will end. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars An honest story, 15 April 2014

I found it hard at first to get into the story as there were quite a few characters who you had to get to know because many were all together at ladies church meetings. There was a good level of realism and honesty as the characters worked through a variety of problems and church based situations. The humour for me was not laugh out loud funny but gentle and based on life observation.

The story was a good length and there was no feeling of rushing towards the end, although the tension increased. The story highlights how church activities often marginalize God rather than glory Him. This offers an opportunity for the believer-reader to reflect on their own church behaviour. It offers all the opportunity to gain insight into the fact that particular denominations find comfort in tradition sometimes rather than a relationship with God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Christian historical novel, 13 April 2014

This was well written with character development right through to the end, as events challenged the world's the characters lived in. Was amazing to have such an interesting in depth book from free. I knew little about the American civil war and the challenges it placed on Christian people. There are some brief gory bits very delicately handled that are needed to emphasis the appallingly waste of life and liberty. Highly recommend for everyone wanting a good read. For Christians it is thought provoking as to who has first call on your loyalty: family; friends; country or God.
