3.0 out of 5 stars Liza's latest comeback, 9 Aug 2003
This review is from: Liza's Back (Audio CD)
Liza Minnelli is no stranger to comebacks. It seems that every few years Liza gives up booze, puts on the sequins and stages a triumphant tour de force (carneige hall 1979, 1987, radio city 1991)
While i found myself willing Liza to make it again, i think this time she dosent quite. Her voice has declined to self parady and her never great range has narrowed even further, but you have to admire her sheer determination, will power and old fashioned star quality.
Her raspy voice is not compleatly unapealing on such numbers as "Don't Smoke In Bed" and "crying" but on the big numbers such as "Cabaret", "Roses Turn" and especially "New York New York" she really does strain and rarley makes it. We all love liza but and i just hope she finds another outlet for her talents (a film, a play, a sitcom) rather than rehashing the sally Bowles routine in the style of an above average drag queen. god bless her.

5.0 out of 5 stars better than never, 9 Aug 2003
This review is from: Never Never Never (Audio CD)
This 1973 is without a doudt one the dame's best and it apperance on cd in its entirety is long overdue, however as it was not issued by emi it lacks the reproduced art work, specific sleeve notes and remastered quality that albums such as "Something" and "I Capricorn" were afforded but i suppose this current form is better than piecing the album together from compilations or wearing out the vinyl copy.Despite the poor sound quality the singing is exceptional. The title track along with "No Regrets", "Make the world a little younger" and "Together find dame Shirley in beatifully understated form, while "Somehow" (a song that must rank alongside "Excuse Me" as Dame Shirley most underated masterpieces)proves that no-one belts out a song like Shirley Bassey.

5.0 out of 5 stars just a broadway baby !, 16 Jan 2003
Elaine Stritch is perhapes the last great lady of the American Theatre, and this one woman show is a celebration of her extrodonary life, both the ups and downs. The show moves from being hysterically funny to deeply moving and then back again. Musical highlights include sondheim "Broadway Bady", "The Ladies Who Lunch" (no other artist can touch Stritch version of this) and the tour de force that is "I'm Still Here". Other highlights include Noel Cowards "Why do the wrong people travel", "Long time daddy" and many deeply funny, deeply moving ancidotes about her life in theatre. In short simply a legend.
