Classic Tony Rose. One of my favourite revival singers, and this is one of his best

4.0 out of 5 stars A Down to Earth Guide to the Possibilities, 6 Nov. 2014

A useful summary of these mysteries. As a WW2 navigator the author knows the many things that could go wrong - and therefore probably did. The style is a bit "ops room", but given the flights of fancy in many books on mysteries, that's a welcme change.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, 6 Nov. 2014
This review is from: Bobittyshooty (Audio CD)
A classic from this inspirational group. They opened my eyes to music other than British, and for that I owe them a large debt.
This is good melodic music thoughtfully arranged and still exciting. Not as clever as later LP's, but for an intellectually-challenged tune player ( I can't call myself a musician) that's a plus.

Raising the Dead: How to Be an Effective Preacher
Raising the Dead: How to Be an Effective Preacher
by Colin Morris
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for preachers, 6 Nov. 2014
I lent my original copy many years ago and didn't get it back. A fine guide and source of inspiration for the actual task of standing in a pulpit and preaching. Full of humour - yet profound

I heard the first of the original LP's which this double CD brings back to life about 40 years back. Like Ceoltoiri Culann - if I've spelt that correctly - and their descendants The Chieftains, Ceoloiri Laighean was a child of Sean O Riada, who "arranged" Irish music, and made it more palatable to many. Some traditionalists, like Brendan Breathnach, weren't happy, and were afraid that, as could happen with radio, real Irish traditional players would be tempted to abandon their particular regional styles and you'd eventually end up with what we'd now call a dumned-down music. Others can tell me if it did, but I found the LP, as with those of the Chieftains, very exciting. You have some top traditional players as well as younger apprentices playing and singing authentically, and the arrangements seemed appropriate for a modern audience - and still do. What's more, the selection of material wasn't hackneyed.

Any lover of quality Irish folk should enjoy this package, and it's great value. I miss the translations of the songs and titles which were on the LP; many will never get the naughty humour of at least one song! (Though I won't miss the sickeningly sentimental intro by, I think, Seamus Ennis.) In brief - buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Russia's Real Role in '67, 29 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We obviously knew that Soviet Russia was the Arab's sponsor in those days, but we didn't realise how far she was prepared to go to help Egypt. This book tells us, and it's not always comfortable knowledge. Perhaps the tragedy is that, paradoxically, Russia should have supported the only secular and socialist state in the region - Israel! - and today's tragedy of the West Bank need not have happened.

Lectionary Reflections: Year C
Lectionary Reflections: Year C
by Jane Williams
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Insights, 11 Mar. 2013

I gained a lot from the original version of these in the "Church Times" and wouldn't want to be without them. Jane Williams passes the test of all the best commentaries: she makes clearer what the writers and compilers of the Bible were saying, but she challenges us to respond as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Folk Song, 11 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This fine hard back will stand comparison with many earlier collections. This intoduction and notes on the songs tell you a lot of what you should know about this tradition. The songs are taken from genuine country preformers, and the only possible problem is that they are sometimes a bit different from the ones already sung in folk clubs, which can cause some confusion. But no doubt the folk process will even that out eventually

Essential for any English folkie

This is Not the Way: Jews, Judaism and the State of Israel
This is Not the Way: Jews, Judaism and the State of Israel

4.0 out of 5 stars Discursive View of a Religion, 11 Mar. 2013

I've bought this as I've had some interest in Israel since at least the 1967 war, but am not Israeli, which means I don't run the risks they do, and in fact am not even Jewish. None-the -less no-one can claim to be free of the risk of violence that threatens the world because of the middIe eastern conflict. That's my justification for reviewing the book.

Rabbi Goldberg, as a liberal Rabbi, offers some thoughts on a Judaism which would be open and...liberal. It's entertaining, though you do need to have a little knowledge of the Jewish world to get the references. Whether it will change the entrenched attitudes of anyone is another matter.
