A variety of cricket songs,in turns witty (try "he Rules of Cricket" expertly sung as a psalm), moving (Roy Harper's " When an old cricketer leaves the crease" banal, but again expertly sung (various school songs) plus amusing Rory Bremner takes on TMS commentators, this will enjoyed by cricket fans and others who appreciate fine music making.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, 30 Oct 2013

This review is from: Drawing Breath (Audio CD)
Colin Towns has again made an impressive album. For small group, (keyboards, tenor sax, bass and drums) the outstanding arranging and compositional skills which characterise his writing for large combinations are again on display. The album exhibits a wide range of expression and mood. In addition Mark Lockheart on tenor contributes fine solos. Highly recommended

This review is from: The Trundlers (Paperback)
Amusing, informative and well written: Trundlers is not quite in the class of Pearson's Slipless in Settle, but highly recommended for those who wish to find out more about cricket's history or to refresh that in an entertaining manner for those who are already knowledgeable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good, though not outstanding Murray album, 26 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Be My Monster Love (Audio CD)
David Murray's albums have invariably been consistently of a very high level ever since the first ones in the 1970s. This may not be one of his very best but such is the level at which he sets the bar that new or seasoned Murray listeners are unlikely to be disappointed. Perhaps there are few real surprises but the skill and taste with which he combines a respect for the tradition with a more contemporary approach is as always rewarding. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece, 15 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For about forty years I have been aware of this album but never heard it. What a treat. One of the best later Ellingtons, as enjoyable as the magnificent New Orleans Suite. Far East Suite ( a misnomer but Duke is entitled to indulge in misleading titles! ) is beautifully composed and arranged by Ellington and Strayhorn and the numbers, varying in tempo and emotional and descriptive content, cohere into a satisfying whole. Jimmy Hamilton's is particularly striking both as a soloist and in the clarinet led ensembles (with Russell Procope). Hodges and Gonsalves are, as one has become accustomed to expect, produce engaging solos.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable, 28 Jan 2013

It was very nice to hear old Mulligan favourites lovingly and expertly played.
A weakness of the album notes is that they fail to identify the solo sequence. If you are not familiar with the three baritone players you cannot know know
which baritone is soloing ,though Cuber is credited as the highlycompetent arranger. While perhaps not adding much in terms of fresh invention, the the soloing is invariably warmly enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heard again after fifty years!, 27 Jun 2012

I was delighted to acquire the Cosmic Scene. I first heard a track from it it as a student at the Jazz Record Appreciation Society at Manchester University in the period 1960-63 but never owned a copy of the then LP. I recall that Jones was the the selection played but don't recall hearing any other track. There are very good solos from Gonsalves and Terry and the writing for the three trombones is excellent, at appropriate times giving wonderful background impetus to the soloists. I am so pleased tro be able to hear the whole album fifty years later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still delightfully fresh, 9 Mar 2012

Although fifty years old and by today's standards on the whole relatively conservative in their approach, these compositions by Hodeir sound remarkably fresh, reflecting the excellent execution of the musicians and the imagination of the composer. The main emphasis is Hodeir's writing but there are very good solos by amongst others Martial Solal(piano)and Roger Guerin (trumpet).
