5.0 out of 5 stars beautifully written book, 7 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
from the foreword it is clear that R.C. Sherriff set out to write in simple prose about ordinary people - he suceeded and in the process wrote a touchingly beautiful tale about the kind of people usually overlooked in literature of this era. they are not aristocrats or artists or bohemians they are a normal, proud, working family going on holiday. by studying them the writer allows the reader to see the complexity of every life. One of my favourite books - well done Persophone Books, another great find in a stunning format, their books remind you of why a kindle isn't always the answer!

I'm 11 years old and I have enjoyed what I've read so far and I hope I enjoy the rest.
Above was written by my son who generally won't read. He loves cricket and this book is a hit. Thank you Bob Cattell.

5.0 out of 5 stars So exciting!, 20 May 2009
It really is impossible to put this book down. It is fast paced yet very well written. My 10 and 12 year olds absolutely loved it but it would definitely suit older readers too - my husband thought it was great. It does not patronise its readers which means it is frightening in places not least because it deals with very realistic scenarios (modern day pirates) and children in danger but that makes it a great read. It is also unique in that boys AND girls will love it; it is not one of those books cynically directed at one or the other it is just a fantastic read. When's the sequel please David Miller?
