The Hot Rock (Dortmunder Novels)
The Hot Rock (Dortmunder Novels)
by Donald Edwin Westlake
Edition: Paperback
Price: 8.60

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime thrillers as funny as this don't come along that often, 31 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The first book in the Dortmunder series - check the author's introduction to how and when Dortmunder came about. Crime thrillers as funny as this don't come along that often, so it's incredible to discover (thanks to Amazon) that Donald Westlake wrote an entire series on Dortmunder and his perpetually cheery but (in their opinion) unfairly treated by life associates.
The laugh all the way through book has a complex and ingenious plot, with human foibles and determination to the fore. Along with British authors Reginald Hill's A Fairly Dangerous Thing, and Colin Watson's Flaxborough novels, Donald Westlake's Dortmunder novels remain way ahead when it comes to the elusive art of comedy crime fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buddy Rich - The New One!, 21 Oct 2013

This review is from: The New One! (Audio CD)
Have idea this album cover is the same as a Buddy Rich LP but with a different title. This CD (The New One!) contains studio recordings by Buddy Rich's then newly formed big band which have the same swing and enthusiasm as the two previous live recordings. This mid-Sixties album has a band of very technical capable musicians, many who are not that well known. The New One! is straight ahead swing plus the bonus of interesting alternative and previously rejected takes. Glad I caught up with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Fails To Swing., 10 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This 1977 concert recording has Gerry Mulligan on a very aggressive and swinging evening. The rhythm section of piano, vibes, guitar, double bass and drums, reflects the line-ups of vibist Gary Burton's early small groups. On this recording, Gerry Mulligan plays his own compositions and others. Or possibly "re-explores" should be the expression. Have made the mistake before of thinking Gerry Mulligan could be lethargic when he was the only front-line horn. Glad I didn't let this CD slide by.

The Phantom Army of Alamein: The Men Who Hoodwinked Rommel
The Phantom Army of Alamein: The Men Who Hoodwinked Rommel
by Rick Stroud
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.86

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book., 10 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought the paperback edition of The Phantom Army of Alamein when read rave reviews for the hardback edition. How do you deceive an enemy such as Rommel who is well-versed in deception himself, especially in a desert? This is a good enough reason in itself to buy this book. Only the British could possess such a varied collection of determined and different characters to tackle the immense problems. One or two real characters, maybe, but also tremendous hard work and ingenuity. Best to buy the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vital Dizzy Gillespie big band sessions., 28 Mar 2013

Great to have two albums from the U S Government's mid-fifties financed Dizzy Gillespie big band. Hadn't heard the Afro studio big band session before, nor the other small group tracks. Competitively priced double CD. Excellent music. Composers are listed but still searching the small print for the names of arrangers and soloists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Informal Sessions., 28 Mar 2013

The bonus tracks, My Fair Lady, are very well known. The Manne 234 sessions have Coleman Hawkins on top form on standards, plus two contributions on piano and vibes from Eddie Costa in trio format. The Hawkins (on piano and tenor sax) duet with drummer Shelly Manne is yet another gem in this long overdue reissue.

A Sherlock Holmes-era thriller set in winter. A gripping and ripping yarn of the old school. And a collector's item.
