Masterplug Indoor Power SWC62-MP 6-Socket Individually Switched Trailing Socket with Neon and 2 m Extension Lead (White)
Price: £13.06

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable, well-priced, 13 Dec 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We have purchased several extender blocks of this brand, mostly 4-gang and unswitched, although at least one is individually switched. A 3+3 switched bank would have been preferred to this in-line version as it would require less space. As this was a 'Daily Deal' offer, it was one not to pass.

As yet, not a single block has failed either in total or on a single socket in many years of use. Nothing less is expected of this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Offers more usage options than the basic alternatives; no storage for tools and accessories. Quite expensive!, 13 Dec 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Please be aware that the manufacturer's carton is very nearly 1m in length although less than 30cm deep and wide and it will probably arrive in a carton sufficiently large to contain a second such machine.

This machine is a new addition to Black and Decker's Dustbuster range of hand-held, portable cleaners but it now uses a higher power 24v Lithium-ion battery that charges in less than four hours. Rather than charging via a socket on the cleaner, it requires use of a Docking Station that itself can be screwed to a wall, side of a cupboard etc, and requires two screws of a suitable length (not supplied) and any additional fixings needed. It can then be plugged into a nearby mains socket. Mating contacts on the cleaner and on the Dock complete the charging circuit. There is no option for off-dock charging. Its lead is usefully long at about 2m, allowing various location possibilities and the cleaner can be optionally left on charge when not in use. Recharge time from flat is under 4 hours.

It is also the first of the range to allow the attachment of the types of tool previously only seen with full-size upright cleaners and the more recent mid-size models, namely a powered floor and carpet tool and an extension tube. There are contacts within the tool, tube and machine to deliver power to the head. This allows you to stand upright (or at worst, stoop a little) so that the head can reach floor level without requiring that you follow suit. Remove the floor tool, and engage the fitted folding brush and you could reach into ceiling corners and friezes to remove spiderwebs and dust. A much smaller brush tool is also provided to get into the nooks and crannies of shelves or other furniture. This model isn't intended to replace your existing full- or mid-sized vacuum cleaner but to supplement it for those smaller, local tasks that may not require use of a larger and heavier machine or the bother of having to get it from a cupboard, sort out the tool(s) to use and then to plug it into the mains. With this machine, it is instant 'on' cleaning, although with the proviso that its battery is always fully, or moderately well charged.

The nozzle for the machine is quite long and fixed. It has a sufficiently wide mouth to cover any normal objects that exist and about 2cm or less in diameter. It can reach into some crevices but not those which are quite narrow. The machine also features a simple-to-clean filter on the air intake side and a washable foam exhaust filter at the other side. Its documentation is in a two-way, short document with mostly diagrammatic operating instructions at one end and the usual legal jargon at the other. It is worth reading and keeping for later use.

Being battery powered, you are not limited to its use within whatever distance a power lead permits it to reach but you can take it anywhere about the home. It isn't too heavy to carry up a flight of stairs and is reasonably small (without the extension tube and tools). With its extension tube affixed and the floor head fitted, it could clean your rugs and carpets in a room, on the stairs, hallways etc. Without its extension and floor tool and with or without the small brush, it can be used in a car, caravan or motorhome without the need for a lengthy power cord or extension. The fitted extension tube may also allow you to reach under a car seat or furniture even if the cleaner is too bulky to allow that alone. There is also a foldaway medium-sized brush on the extension, a clever feature in that it is always available to use where appropriate without needing to search for it. The only tool not included is a long and narrow crevice tool to get into the tighter spots; the nose on the machine can reach into some but not with the extension fitted or any of its current tools.

It has a charge indicating system comprising apparently revolving and flashing lights; the degree of charge being indicated by the number simultaneously illuminated and whether or not they continue to flash. A full charge is shown when all are extinguished. As the machine is new and the battery has not been charged and depleted several times to condition it, it is difficult to judge what its usage time may be per charge. It was about half-charged (probably slightly less) when received and operated for about 8 or 9 minutes. Fully-charged, it should provide 25-30 minutes, or more, of use.

Its abilities with different available surfaces are good. We have either textured vinyl flooring or carpeting in the various rooms so cannot comment about hard, smooth surfaces such as tiles, laminated flooring etc or deep pile carpet as we don't have them. It was able to collect a deliberate spill of sugar from the vinyl flooring in the kitchen despite it having shallow hills and valleys into which small particles can collect and the carpet tool was satisfactorily effective on our shallow pile carpets. As with many vacuum cleaners, its abilities to collect long threads of wool, cotton or hair and not to have them collect around the brush is about equal to most other machines; it appears to effectively collect the shorter lengths. The carpet tool is about as wide as those on most full-size machines and so can cover an area with relatively few sweeps in both directions; for a portable and hand-held, that is impressive.

The machine is not unduly noisy in use, quite similar to and possibly slightly less than a more basic, non-cyclone machine used for the past two years. However, it is a little more 'airy' in nature and probably related to the cyclone system. With the extension and carpet tool fitted, it is a little more noisy than without them but at a far lower level than any comparable full-size machine known that is similarly equipped. Overall, it is a well-designed machine with some unusual added extras and capabilities for this type of device. With its extras and additional capabilities, it is substantially more expensive than a more basic model. However, it also approaches in price that of some mid-sized alternatives that may have a few additional capabilities, flexible extensions, etc. Its docking station is for charging and machine storage only; there is no storage provision for its two tools or its extension tube should you choose not to have one or more always fitted - Black and Decker are not the first to overlook that requirement. The final decision, as ever, is for the potential purchaser.

3.0 out of 5 stars Did not hit the spot, 13 Dec 2014
This review is from: Lost & Found (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
'Lost and Found' is a soon to be published book (as at Dec 2014) by a new Australian author.

The story concerns a trio of individuals who had each suffered a loss, two by bereavement and the third by abandonment. While the youngest of the three, and the one abandoned, is a seven-year-old girl the other two are quite elderly. Its major theme is that each person needs help to resolve their personal issues and it is the remainder who provide it using whatever skills and wisdom they may possess, regardless of age or worldliness.

Trade reviewers were very positive about this book and personal expectations were therefore raised. Unfortunately, there are instances when expectations are not met and a book is not easy to 'get into' at that specific time; this is one such instance. It is not poorly written but there wasn't the expected pleasure and its reading remains incomplete. There were issues with the author's style choices that were personally annoying, but others may accept them.

Consequently, a lower rating than is usually given will apply in this instance.

Dove for Men Clean Comfort Body and Face Wash 400ml Pack of 3
Dove for Men Clean Comfort Body and Face Wash 400ml Pack of 3
Price: £10.90

5.0 out of 5 stars Best shower gel used to date, pleasant understated fragrance too, 11 Dec 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Knowledge of Dove was previously limited to those products used by the female members of the family. It is only very recently that its men's range became known. This shower gel was introduced to me in 55ml travel size, each expected to last for two showers at the most. In fact, it is so thick and concentrated that you need use rather little (enough to barely cover a 10p piece), that even a bottle that small goes a long way.

Previously using a variety of almost equally-priced top branded products for many years, many of which now seem rather watery, Dove is clearly the superior product as it tends to stay where it is poured rather than dripping through fingers onto the shower base and down the drain.

The fragrance is slight and understated, and not dissimilar to that of cocao butter and so will not conflict with any aftershave or eau de toilette you may choose to use.

Tacwise 180 NAIL ASSORTMENT PACK (4000) 18G
Tacwise 180 NAIL ASSORTMENT PACK (4000) 18G
Price: £6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A useful starter pack for 180-series and compatible nail guns of all brands, 9 Dec 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Although I shall ignore the state of the package on arrival for review purposes, its contents were strewn haphazardly within the larger package in which it was sent. Originally held within their separate compartments in a plastic tray and secured with a single narrow strip of sellotape across all three bays, the package had not seen the benefits of the Post Office's usual gentle and careful handling. Not a single strip was within its correct bay and most of the larger sizes had been split into much smaller strips. However, most of the 15mm strips were intact and very few had split into small pieces, a few of which are probably unusable.

Although some nail guns are clearly aimed at trade users, others are intended more for the DIYer or light professional uses. These nails are primarily aimed at the 18G/180 series of nail-guns and a chart of compatible TacWise models is included on the sleeve. This is trial or starter pack of three common sizes and includes strips of 15, 25, and 30mm length nails; there are 2,000 of the 15mm and 1,000 apiece of the longer lengths and all are best used with soft woods and other light materials. The 15mm may be used where you may otherwise tack, laying flooring or as a temporary fixing while a glued joint dries, you apply permanent fixings or work on something else; the longer ones will most likely be used as permanent fixings for skirting boards, friezes or dado rails, and when assembling furniture or repairing it as well as in many DIY projects. Once you have a nail gun, you may find yourself using it for tasks not previously considered.

Although this pack includes three popular lengths the gauge also includes 10mm probably most used as a temporary fixing or for tacking, plus 40 and 50mm sizes which are often used in construction and with thicker materials but the shorter and longer nails are accepted by relatively few of the available guns. The 15mm is, perhaps, the most universally compatible length accepted by most 180 nail guns regardless of brand including some multi-purpose models (some manually-operated) that will also accept a gauge of medium- to heavy-duty staples, for example those often used in upholstery rather than clipping together several sheets of paper. It is probable that the single-size packs will also chart the compatible TacWise tools for that size (I have not yet needed to buy one).

If you know that you use one length almost to the exclusion of others, they can be obtained in single-size packs so that you need not endlessly repeat buy this pack. Single-size packs are generally available from Amazon, possibly some larger DIY suppliers but certainly those serving the building trades. The nails are galvanised so are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Although there is no large job that needs doing right now, a few were fired into some lumber scraps and there have been no issues with the nails or the gun and they load and feed cleanly. I haven't yet had a feed jam which may occur should you hit a screw or other metal objects. You may also find that TacWise brad nails are considerably less expensive than many other brands and they are not a 'cheap and nasty' alternative to a more costly product.

Loading of the full strips (and longer sections in this instance) is generally easy, although the technique may differ slightly between brands and models. Used as intended and in a suitable gun with suitable materials (the User Guide, sleeve or carton from the nail gun will usually include suggestions and safety advice), the nails can certainly save time and a few injured fingers or thumbs from a misdirected hammer. If used with inappropriate materials, the nails may fail to penetrate and could be dangerous to the user and anyone in the close vicinity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to install and use; capable of resolving most reception issues, 6 Dec 2014
This Range Extender is designed to resolve the situation where Wi-Fi signals may not reach certain parts of your home, office or other workplace. LinkSys claim that it can cover 300 metres (1000 feet) which is further than most would need. As long as it is able to receive the existing signal, it can re-transmit to reach the previously 'dead' areas. As a bonus, there are two Ethernet sockets to connect as a last resort but they cannot help with those devices that support Wi-Fi only. The box simply plugs into a wall power socket and may require a little trial and error to find the best position, orientation etc. The device is dual band and operates at both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands with most of its power available in the higher band.

There is a Reset button for use in those situations where a laptop (or whatever else) is initially unable to locate its signal. Obviously, the device should be functioning before you try to connect with it but a few seconds of engaging its Reset may resolve the difficulty. There are no other controls, switches etc to worry about. It isn't unattractive but you will need to find a suitable location for it; wall mounting is a possibility but it could also be laid flat on a desk or on a shelf.

It is simple to install and equally easy to use as it does not entail changing existing Internet settings, sign-ons etc. It is not overly expensive, compares reasonably well on price with a pair of PowerLine adapters which may not be suitable in all situations, and offers some advantages.

4.0 out of 5 stars For left-handers only?, 6 Dec 2014
The watch was on offer as one of Amazon's Daily Deals and I had considered its purchase. A second look and thought stopped me when it was realised that it was most probably designed for left-handers and that right-handers would need to remove it to adjust when needed.

None of the current purchasers and reviewers had commented on the fact nor that most other Ingersoll designs are clearly designed for right-handers.

Cole & Mason Electronic Gourmet Precision Grind 21 cm Greenwich Stainless Steel Pepper Mill
Cole & Mason Electronic Gourmet Precision Grind 21 cm Greenwich Stainless Steel Pepper Mill

5.0 out of 5 stars Attractive, easily repeatable settings and very simple to fill and use, 6 Dec 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Cole and Mason pepper grinder is a mainly steel-bodied utensil with a lower see-through portion which allows you to judge when a refill is about due. This model is electronic, unlike our existing manual model from the same brand. It requires 6 AAA batteries that are not supplied and must therefore be provided. If the grinder is to be mostly used in the kitchen rather than at the table, quality leakproof batteries would be best due to the heat and humidity when cooking. Equally, it does not come with any peppercorns which should be available in small and moderately large quantities at any supermarket and many local shops. A visually identical product (not yet seen) is separately available for salt, presumably with a different grind, but apart from the obvious difference in colour and shape of the visible contents there may be no obvious difference between them other than perhaps the markings for levels of grind.

The top steel portion fits onto the base with a bayonet fit, a small twist and it will lift off to fill. A pair of open/locked padlock icons indicates the alignment and position of the two parts in conjunction with a similar 'locked' icon on the upper plastic portion. A set of batteries will last for quite some time and should not need to be frequently replaced. The mill offers six levels of grind from fine to coarse (small flakes to chunks) and can be re-set as desired simply by aligning the relevant spot marked on the lowermost steel section against a pointer below the brand name just above it. Each marking approximates the size of granules it produces, but none approaches the fine powder of the commercially ground product.

The unit is quite tall and weighty with the batteries installed and they are easy to add; they are housed in the topmost section and require that two plastic clips within be depressed to release the holder which can then be pulled clear of the body. The product is well-constructed and should last many years (the manual model has seen several years of daily use and is nowhere close to wearing out). It is quite capacious and will probably accept the full contents of a small drum or pack (20-25g) as are often found - I have a much larger pack and refill by sight from a bulk 250g drum.

The instruction leaflet is quite small and the type is tiny; the English versions of the texts are slightly larger but some will need a magnifier to read them. You may want to keep the leaflet for a while until you have conducted all the refilling/replacing/reassembling functions once or twice apiece although each is simple once you know how the parts fit together.

The mill is quite attractive and will enhance the table. It is easy to use and requires little more than a depress of the large top button; you may want to not hold it too down too long as inexperience may lead to an excess of pepper in or on your food. A few uses will allow better assessment. I shall probably not seek to buy the salt mill as no local shops appear to stock the large sea salt or rock salt crystals needed for it.

The mill is a useful product to have available. With its six degrees of grind which can be easily re-set time and time again, it is superior to the manual mills with their adjustment being more by guesswork and hope rather than accuracy and repeatability. It is modern in appearance and clean and tidy in design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal storage medium for most smart phones and tablets, 30 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The standard size of memory card for most smart phones and tablets and a few other devices as well. It cannot be used in most PCs or laptops without the appropriate adapter which is not part of this package, but most users will have one or two available. With the same adapter, you will be able to use the card in most digital cameras as the full-size SD format is now almost the universal format.

Bought as a spare to be used in a tablet when there is a need for a greater variety of media to be available for entertainment, off-line tuition etc. and as a 'Black Friday' deal which brought its price down to a must-buy level.
