JAGDGESCHWADER 301/302 WILDE SAU: In Defense of the Reich with the Bf 109, Fw 190 and Ta 152
by Willi Reschke
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 33.50

5.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT WAR DIARY, 24 Jan 2014
The history of JG301/JG 302 "Wilde Sau" squadrons is reported by the author with a detailed diary of the actions conducted day by day. Willi Reschke is certainly more expert to the respect, having participated as a pilot to the war actions up to the last days. His memoirs of the difficult and vain fight against the allied bombardiers and their escort fighters, more and more numerous on the skies of Germany, are a precious source to understand the defects and merits of the German fighters and the various tactics adopted for opposing the allies.

The diary of war is accompanied by a good photographic documentation, regarding mainly pilots and technical personnel. Extremely valid the chapter related to the employment of the Ta-152, with the description of the flight characteristics and combat actions flown by Reschke up to the end of the conflict. The opinion of the pilot is very interesting for a historian of the German aviation of that period, because concerns the real operational performances compared to those of FW 190 A8 (example: the small turning radius, excellent maneuverability and speed) and not simple theoretical data. Ta-152 was a fighter capable to match with success British and American ones
Reschke has certainly done a good job telling the history of these squadrons and their pilots, the most of them fallen in combat. The appendixes on the victories and the losses, with precise details, gave a precise and dramatic perception on how much strenuous has been the battle against the allies.
A diary with no emphasis on nazi doctrine and/or political references, often present in other histories written by German pilots.
Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars AN ACCOUNT TO BE READ, 24 Jan 2014
The book, as well known, describes the operation that the NAVY SEAL Team Six, known also as DEVGRU, has conducted for eliminating Bin Laden. The account of the intervention alternates to the personal history of the author, his training to become a member of this famous, even if secret, special team.
The various training phases, aimed to gain the maximum perfection, are narrated in simple way, deprived of emphatic affirmations.
The description of the special equipment (some photos show a few of them), not known to the public, gives a look on some available high-tech armaments and material for high risk interventions of such kind.
There are described some real operational moments in the various theaters of war. Also these stories are honestly reported with the possible unforeseen event and incidents. The men are not super heroes, but only elements highly motivated and determined to accomplish the assigned mission.
The story is honest and free of those boasts and pseudo-statements of petty national policy present on many accounts (more or less reliable) written by former members of Elite Forces. The "Neptune Spear" is told with simplicity, without exaltation. Certainly a few "secret details" have been omitted for understandable reasons. This must be kept in mind when doubts arose on the real carrying out of the action. We can discuss (approve or disapprove) if such operations guarantees more security to all of us, but surely it is a clear message: there is always someone with the ability and resources to find men like Bin Laden and to call them to answer of their crimes.
In any case, the book is well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN INTERESTING INSIGHT ON PACIFIC AIR WAR, 24 Jan 2014
One of the few books describing the aerial War in the Pacific, sight from the Japanese pilots. Worth of this book goes to the author that, due to his knowledge of the language and life in Japan, has been able to pick up testimonies on realities little known to the western public
The description of the training, and difficulties in becoming pilots or part of the flight crews, gives a precise perception of the mentality and the values that the Japanese Armed Forces tried to transmit, in tuning with ancient national traditions. To this intention, to learn that the capture was considered an infamy and a worse fate than the death in combat, well discloses what feelings fed the combativeness and the determination of these pilots and how much hard and merciless such war has been, not only for their western counterpart.
The searches conducted by the author on Japanese sources (and also allied), often recalled, is a sure support value in giving credit to the stories narrated by the interviewed pilots, above all in front of the difficulty, for a normal reader, to enter to war accounts in Japanese language.
A book that is a very valid source for the readers and historians who want, to distance of so many years, not only know the aerial war stories of that theater of war, but also try to strongly understand the spirit and the values of a generation, since from the youth, conditioned by a managing class voted to the exaltation of the warlike spirit and the power on nationalism.
A strongly recommended book.

A user-friendly device. The price is acceptable. The magnetic part allows sticking it during the measure. The digital display, contrarily of an analogic one, facilitates the reading of the values. The battery life is excellent, the body is sufficiently strong with aluminum frame, even if not water proof as declared.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT EXTENSION OF THE FIRST VOLUME, 5 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This second volume, to the peer of the first one, confirms an unbelievable job of research carried out by the author. The book gives a chance to the collectors, and not only to these, to have at hand a valid source of data concerning English hunting rifles of the gold period among the two world wars.
Very appreciable also the possibility to have a look in the vast production of a little known gunsmiths (many of these forgotten) and know, reading their interesting biographies, the continuous evolving of new ideas (for that era), the talent these artisans has given making these weapons, in the respect of a tradition, vaunt of English sporting firearms industry and patrimony of all those people that appreciate this kind of job.
The author has done a magnificent job and I am certain the publication of the third volume, (also if not yet purchased) will confirm the more than positive judgment given for the first two.
An absolutely valuable trilogy a simple keen on “fine hunting guns”, or professionals and collectors should have.

Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Stories (Wordsworth Special Editions)
Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Stories (Wordsworth Special Editions)
by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.24

4.0 out of 5 stars "A LOW-COST EDITION OF HOLMES ADVENTURES"., 8 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The stories and novels are well known to fans of Sherlock Holmes and are always a pleasant reading. What makes this collection interesting are the illustrations drawn by the Strand Magazine, many of whom are by Sidney Paget. However, they are not a good reproduction of the originals, and the characters of the text are small and makes the reading not easy. This is a logical consequence linked to a paperback edition. In any case, this is a complete collection that thanks to the chosen format allows you to bring the book with you, as a travel companion, and read, or reread, stories that many readers still appreciate.
Reccomended

5.0 out of 5 stars "AN EXCELLENT WORK OF RESEARCH", 7 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This first book and the second one are a valuable source of reference for collectors, scholars and enthusiasts who want to deepen the knowledge of English hunting guns and of the birth of gunsmiths and inventors who have made the history of these weapons. A work of painstaking research, an amount of biographical information, which allows the reader to realize just how complex and continuously evolving was the English trade in the golden period between the two world wars. Worthy of praise the collection of the serial numbers of weapons produced, which is a valuable tool to identify the origin of guns which now have more than a century of life..... and still used on the field, or the subject of collecting!!
The publication of a third volume, which provides additional valuable data, is a necessary completion of these two. The cost of the work is not negligible, but "there are no free meals".
This work is highly recommended.

The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: Novels v. 3
The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes: Novels v. 3
by Arthur Conan Doyle
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 26.00

5.0 out of 5 stars "THE COMPLETION OF A NICE JOB", 30 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This third volume is the logical continuation of the previous two. The content and the fine typographical layout are further confirmation of the great and exceptional work done by the publisher. The four novellas: "A Study in Scarlet", "The Sign of Four", "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and "The Valley of Fear", are perhaps the most famous and engaging among those written by Sir A. Conan Doyle.
Once again, as for the previous two volumes, the numerous notes are a "reading in the reading" and make even more understandable and credible the environment and the historical era in which the characters act, up to make Holmes, Watson and others seem like real.
This volume, together as the two previous, deserves the highest score: 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A PERFECT GIFT FOR HOLMES'ENTHUSIASTS", 30 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This collection of stories of Sherlock Holmes is surely the best among the many published. The presence of numerous notes that accompany the texts of the stories allow the reader to "live in-person" the Victorian atmosphere of that time, to learn and expand on certain aspects which, though not directly related to the stories, are an interesting corollary.
The many notes can slow down the reading, but do not disturb the enthusiast of Holmes who,of course, has already read and knows his adventures. Moreover, the many drawings of the known Sidney Paget and other illustrations of the time make even more fascinating the content of the stories. Certainly Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would give his appreciation to this collection of his most famous works.
The work of Leslie Klinger is also valued by the excellent graphic format chosen, which makes this two volumes a "must" for lovers of Holmes and the various characters that interact with the detective.
In summary, the work may be defined as a milestone in the reading and study of the character Holmes and make Leslie Klinger an authority on the matter. This beautiful work should absolutely be present in the library of a lover of mysteries stories.

The Guns of the Third Reich
The Guns of the Third Reich
by John Walter
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book, 14 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book of the known firearms expert John Walter is a precious source of information that allows both the history buff of WWII small arms and the experienced collector, to understand the complex system of development, provisioning and employment of the Wehrmacht's guns during the II G.M. Also very useful the references to the period of the Republic of Weimar, antecedent to the Third Reich.
Of notable interest the detailed info on the weapons acquired in the occupied or allied Countries, in the light of the various typologies (pistols, rifles, weapons antitank, etc.) of the guns and numerous models in existence. Even for an experienced collector, a subject difficult to master due to a complex classification, typical of the German weapons acquisition system in use in that period.
To this respect, a small defect is the lack of a photographic documentation that would surely allow appreciating better the various technical / constructive differences of these guns, most of them used by Police and Auxiliary Services.
In any case, a book recommended.
