5.0 out of 5 stars Calude Nougaro - Un Vrai "Classique", 19 Feb. 2003
Understated and underrated, Claude Nougaro is simply excellent! Whilst being almost iconic in France, he seems much less well - known in the the UK than other French singers. The best way I can think of describing him is to say that he is to France, what Frank Sinatra is to the USA.
This album is a must have! Track number 5 "Cecile ma Fille" is particularly interesting, where he sings about his firlfriend's unplanned pregnanacy with such a poignant tenderness it sends shivers down your spine! This song has become a classic in its own right, and is always played on French radio - yet it doesn't seem at all dated.
Claude Nougaro has an instantly recognisable and very calming voice that lends very well to his particular genre of "jazz et java," however, he does incorporate other music styles into his work, as you will hear.
"Grande Angle Sur Nougaro" is a very good introduction to his music, for as a well as containing the "classics" for which he is most known (Cecile ma Fille, Tu Verras,le Cinema) it also features some of his more recent songs.
This is definitely an album to have for relaxed, velvety evenings at home with a few glasses of (probably red) wine and luxurant food! Like Levi's jeans or the little black dress, this album is a timeless classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Claude Nougaro - Un Vrai "Classique!", 17 Feb. 2003
I remember a few years ago, when Serge Gainsbourg, having gone widely unnoticed in the UK for years suddenly gained an almost cult following that imbued him with a certain "hipness." (He had been around for years!!!) All the "trendies" @ my uni who thought they "were out there" would discuss him in an intellectual way that would just make me crack up with laughter! It wasn't quite the same with Claude Nougaro. He too has been around for years, and yet whilst being almost iconic in France, seems still relatively unknown in the UK.
This is something I intend to change! I am a man with a mission!
THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING! His instantly recognisable voice is both calming and uplifting at the same time. Primarily known as a jazz singer / crooner, he incorporates other styles in his music to great effect, in a way that is both understated & underrated - and with a certain "je ne sais quoi" - darling!
My favourite is track no 5, "Cecile ma Fille," where he sings about his girlfriend's unplanned pregnancy with a poignant tenderness! I first heard this on a French radio station called "Nostalgie" when I had got lost in Brittany in the mist, just after I had bought a small cottage and was visiting it for the first time.
In my mind, Claude Nougaro is to France what Frank Sinatra is to the States - an icon of excellence! Enjoy!!
