Courtney (Red Fox Picture Books)
Courtney (Red Fox Picture Books)
by John Burningham
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book, 26 May 2016

Quite simply one of the best modern classic tales for children of all ages: moving, funny, thoughtful and beautifully understated. Courtney, a dog who is more than he seems on the surface, is an archetypal under-rated hero with more talent and compassion than any may reasonably expect. The illustrations are insightful and warmly humorous, the story is told cleanly and with lots of space to talk about what might be happening to the child you are reading to along the way. The 'mysterious' ending is a touch of daring most people will not see coming and makes a great talking-point at home. God Bless you John Burningham. That it's very short and gorgeously illustrated makes it a story to turn back to again and again.

It's All in Your Head: Stories from the Frontline of Psychosomatic Illness

2.0 out of 5 stars The author's own credentials as an empath seem excellent, but do they need so much restatement, 26 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A book of one basic chapter revisited several times. The author's own credentials as an empath seem excellent, but do they need so much restatement? Seizures, in particular, recur throughout from different sources, but the 'treatment', referral to psych, is always the same. There is some insight into this doctor's particular method of dealing with people whose illness requires to be seen from a different perspective to the traditional, but the repetitiousness becomes a cure of insomnia. Very dull.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny and humane at the same time. Bravo., 1 April 2016
Sanjeev Kohli is a magnificently funny writer and this slice of Scots-Asian life in a corner shop is completely magic. Beautifully done: I have bought every one of the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars ... seems to have a touch of Marmite - folk love the work or don't, 8 Jan. 2016
Kate Atkinson seems to have a touch of Marmite - folk love the work or don't, it seems. Neither this book nor "Life after Life" spoke to me at all yet I buy her new work out of curiosity to see what she has worked on each time. Sorry not to be more positive, but on the strength of her early books - books I found fulfilling in every sense - I'll keep checking what she is doing now.

5.0 out of 5 stars that takes an excellent scan to reproduce an old photograph, 1 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not having had a new scanner for a LONG time, I bought this after my previous long-serving HP model packed in batch-svanning photographs. If what you want is a simple-to-use scanner with presets that can be over-ridden by personal settings, that can email, store or stack scans, that takes an excellent scan to reproduce an old photograph, do not hesitate to try this one. Extremely pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bonds of Love, 21 Sept. 2015

One man's stories about masculine affection and the deepest bonds between man and man in family relationships - almost the missing texts of British literature - movingly done. Glad I bought it.
