5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully educational film about a part of history that people do not know enough about., 22 May 2014

An excellent film, very well acted, and true to the book, as the author was very much part of the process.
It covers huge topics, i.e. the power of forgiveness, the need for help to recover from trauma ......... and it does so very well.
The extra interviews with the actors and producers are well worth watching too.
I would strongly recommend this film, and especially the book, to everyone over the age of 15, especially the Japonese, as it seems they have not been taught this part of their history.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom [DVD]
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom [DVD]
Dvd ~ Idris Elba
Price: 9.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing can match the real life documentation and film of Nelson Mandel's life - it is so huge, no film can ever do him justice., 22 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good film, excellent for anyone who has not followed Nelson Mandela's life, and events he took part in over the past 90 years. It is especially useful for children and young people.
The book is better than the film, being Nelson Mandela's autobiography. It fills in much detail that is lost in the film. Watching the film, you do not feel the length of time he was in jail, as you do in the book. You get a less horrific depiction of the Soweto disaster than real life films show.
However, it is well acted, and a great film. The problem is that Nelson Mandela himself was too great to confine to a film.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good film, but not as good as the book., 22 May 2014

I would recommend this film, as the subject matter is so important. However, having already read the book, I was very disappointed that some of the story was changed. It seemed to me to be quite unecessry to change it. The original story was true, and very moving.
The acting was excellent, and the film kept my interest the whole way through. There was plenty of humour, though the story was desperately sad.
I would recommend that people choose the book, rather than the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best series I have ever seen on TV, 26 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved everything about Mistresses. It is a modern day drama about everyday experiences that so many people can find themselves caught up in and identify with. I loved the way that over and over again, one of the friends would be asked for, and give, really sensible advice, but this would invariably be agreed with and then ignored!
All the acting is superb, as is the casting. The four principle actresses are brilliant, and none of them 'steal the lime-light', all are equally good.
I found Katy's repeated habit of getting into yet another unsuitable relationship too deeply, then trying to extricate herself, was tortuous and painful to watch. This was because it was so well done, and I've seen it in real life too!
Jess develops from carefree and happy, colorful and funny, experimenting with different emotional experiences, to being hurt and sick. Her transformation and increased maturity is very sensitively portrayed.
Trudy is a wonderful, warm mother, who has lost self confidence during her years as a Mum, but she changes to a woman juggling demands and responsibilities as she chooses to take on new roles. She is wonderfully portrayed and very funny and lovable.
Siobhan, like all the group, is always trying to do the right thing, but, like all of them, finds herself in a complex and impossible situation. All the sexual scenes are sensitively and beautifully portrayed. It is easy to see her pain at being rejected by Harry, and why she chooses to take the path she does. As for the scenes at the office with Dominic, they must be the most sexy scenes I've seen on TV, the directing is brilliant.
I must mention the wonderful depiction of a painful mother/daughter relationship between Katy and her mother, (Joanna Lumley).
As well as Dominic, Richard must get a special mention for his superb acting. All the men are just perfect, and the weak characters, such as Paul and Geoff are very well cast.
So many important themes are included : friendship; children and reconstituted families; Alzheimer's disease; infertility; choices during palliative care; fraud.....what is Right and what is Wrong? Is honesty always a good thing? Etc etc I could go on and on. How could anyone not enjoy Mistresses?

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put the book down, and couldn't stop watching the film, which was just as good. Brilliant story, acting, everything., 7 July 2013

I chose five stars as there was nothing I disliked about this book and the film that went with it. A riveting story, very modern, using unusual characters. Very harrowing, very moving, very funny also at times.
I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes Spooks, Spiral, Danish and Scandinavian dramas.

I was disappointed in this film, although the acting was excellent. It was gloomy, dark and depressing, but then so were the times. The conflict within the government seemed very familiar. One learned a lot about Lincoln himself, and how he dealt with his government.

The sound track was very poor. I was glad when it was over.

For adults only, as children could be very frightened by the death of the young boy around whom the drama centers.

This drama kept the viewers interest from start to finish. The acting was very good on the whole, as was the casting, and the script.

However, I felt David Tennant was a bit over the top, overacting his role as the difficult detective. I also felt that, as the actors themselves did not know who had committed the murder until the very end, it was hard to believe that the actual murderer had committed the crime. In real life, he surely would have given something away. If the actor who was the actual murderer, had known that he was, I believe it would have worked better, even if none of the other actors knew.

Not perfect, but very good.

3.0 out of 5 stars An important piece of history, portrayed in a moving film., 9 May 2013

This is an excellent film, just a little outdated because more recent film makers have access to better technology.
It is the story of how the newspaper editor, Donald Woods, gets to know Steve Biko and his friends and family, learns from them and is influenced by them. His change of position puts him in danger and he has to escape the country, along with his wife and five children.

The behavior of the white South African police at that time ( the 1970s), before the release of Nelson Mandela, is truly shocking. As were the many examples of apartheid. How things have changed in a relatively short time. It's important to remember, or to know about, if you didn't live through it at the time.

Unbeatable film drama, based on real life. There was nothing I disliked about this, except that if I hadn't bought it as DVDs, I would not have been able to wait from one week to the next to see the next episode. It took over our lives for the few days that we watched the whole four series together. We could think and talk about nothing else.

It was wonderful to see unglamorous cops, scruffy, swearing continuously, disorganized much of the time, often badly supported by management, but focused, courageous and committed, none the less.

The humorous comments and throwaway remarks were brilliant. Whoever did the casting deserves accolades too, because the actors were always perfect for their parts. Just think of the faces of the characters. As for Monsieur Le Juge, he was really the thinking woman's crumpet- highly intelligent, handsome, sexy and morally upright and incorruptible.

If you enjoyed Borgen and The Killing, this is the film for you. You just cannot get better acting, script writing, casting and directing than this.
