It is cringeworthy brilliance. A film of its time that can only be enjoyed through nostalgia glasses. I put mine on and enjoyed the nonsense.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Wobbly... & Needs "Sales" on the Cover, 20 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You know, I liked the style and the easy read but it is not about Communication. A quick look at the chapter titles proves the point: Networking (70 pages on this), How to Sell More, Referrals, Presentations. All very much Sales content. Andy even shares his credentials as "Britain's Best Sales Trainer of the Year". Maybe Sales should have made its way onto the cover in some way which may have changed my decision about buying it and put the content in the right context.

The premise is good... Andy became a great communicator because he learned to explain things with clarity to his blind mother necessitating the removal of what he describes as "Jelly" from communication and focusing solely on what is important. Early in the book, this is supported quite well but diminished as I was drawn into the Networking and what Andy calls Afters (what you leave your client with). Once into the main body it became a bit standard Sales approach with new acronyms being the only differentiating feature. And the Presentation part... seemed to have a fair amount of Jelly.

Overall, a nice book that is an easy read, that won't do you any harm and might do you some good on Networking in particular. But it is a book on Sales not Communication.

PS. Probably worth 4 Stars as a Sales book.

Will it Make the Boat Go Faster?: Olympic-winning Strategies for Everyday Success

5.0 out of 5 stars An Olympic smorgasbord of ideas for you and your business, 1 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love the driving thought behind this book: If you are an Olympic rowing team, then if what you're doing doesn't make your boat go faster, then don't do it and do something else that does. Now take that idea and apply liberally to your life and business.

Ben Hunt-Davis was part of the Olympic Gold medal winning rowing 8 at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and he uses the events and ideas he experienced in the journey to the games as the stimulus for actions that can be taken in business, life or any other enterprise. His partner in this book is Harriet Beveridge, who provides the structural "how to apply it to you" part of the book. Each of the 11 Chapters starts with Ben's Olympic journey story and then you get Harriet's take on how to use it. This 2-phase works well, especially when you get toward the Olympic final, where I must say I got caught up in the pace and excitement of the race despite already knowing the result. Harriet's advice is practical, well written and the on-line support you can sign up for is a nice added bonus that asks interesting questions to help you get even more from each chapter as you read. Things you have to get used to in the book are some of the weird names Ben uses for various actions and principles like "choose the iguana" and "don't talk bollock's to Basil" (must be lot's of Basil's in rowing)but it is OK and you get used to it.

I found this book easy and fun to read and packed full of useful and practical ideas. You don't have to like rowing to read it and I bet you to get wrapped up in Ben and the crew's story. The advice is good, straightforward and it is a smorgasbord of ideas for you and your business that will make your boat go faster!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mother of All Persuasion Literature, 9 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Everywhere you read about persuasion, this book will be cited. It is the definitive categorisation of Influence & Persuasion. The 6-Influences, Liking, Reciprocity, Commitment & Consistency, Social Proof, Scarcity & Authority are known throughout the world. This is the source. Written in a blend of styles between a University paper and an Entertaining popular psychology book, it is fast to read, quick to learn and immaculately researched. It has been regurgitated by many pretenders since but not with this quality or authenticity. I am not sure that Professor Cialdini intended this book to become such a pillar of Sales literature as he writes from the perspective of the customer (the influenced)and how they should protect themselves from unwanted influence. In doing so he has delivered the DNA of real influence to the Sales community. A fabulous book that will ignite your curiosity for this fabulous subject that affects every decision you will ever make, and as such is the fabric of life itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Read for Progressive Managers, 9 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book was recommended to me by one of the delegates at a recent training. It sounded great and Stephen (the delegate in question) was so enthusiastic about how it helped him understand his team and work more effectively that I just had to pick up a copy and read it. I am glad I did. Patrick Lencioni adopts a "commentary" style and follows Katheryn, a 57 year old executive who is a surprise appointee as a new CEO with responsibility of turning the fortunes of DecisionTech, a technology company, around. It focuses on the stakeholders in the management team and how the dynamics work between each of the players. Flicking back through it it seems a bit cold and shallow but while reading it I was totally caught up in the story and wanted to know how each of the players would react to the unfolding events. You will recognise characters, the situations, the meetings and companies you have worked in. It will remind you of times that you have taken unhelpful positions and it is the style that does that to you. The learning outcome is a useful pyramid model that can assist any manager in bringing a team together. All in all, an engaging book that provides insight and learning that makes it an essential read for progressive managers who believe they really can change things. Is that you?

5.0 out of 5 stars Blowing Your Marketing Possibilities Wide Open, 29 Dec. 2009
It is a classic, I know but it is worth reading again and again. I picked up so much second time around and continually reference it for our work on marketing our own company and in content for client work in Marketing. The "Sixteen Monumental Secrets of Guerilla Marketing" alone are worth the cover price, but there is so much more. What Jay Conrad Levinson did with this book is blow marketing thinking wide open. He empowers SME's who thought they couldn't afford big thinking effective campaigns to take up the challenge and spread the word about their products and services. It is about the channels you can find and the strategies and tactics you can use. You have many more options than you think. Find them here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is FEAR Holding You back?, 29 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The 50th Law (Hardcover)
If like me, you are already a fan of Robert Greene and his work then you'll know what you are in for... key messages around Power (48 Laws of), Seduction (The Art of) backed by beautiful short historically referenced stories that illustrate the message. Wonderfully easy to read with powerful and life changing messages. After reading the 48 Laws and The Art of Seduction it seemed to me that everyone in power or in a high position of influence through politics, celebrity or industry already had this knowledge. It is as if it were some kind of secret that is given only to those in the know.
This book has the same power but this time Robert Greene explores the subject of "Fear". Fear in its many forms is exposed as the artificial barrier it is. Overcoming it is the real challenge and Robert Greene uses a map provided by episodes from the life of 50 Cent (the rapper and entrepreneur) to guide you through it. Until this book, 50 Cent held no appeal for me at all. After reading about him? Well I feel some respect for his entrepreneurial spirit, some admiration for the way he dealt with what life has thrown at him (or he has brought on himself) but still don't know if we'll ever be "Homies in Da Hood" if you take my drift. Still, his life provides a good map to overcome adversity and fear and takes you through some pretty awful territory. From the murder of his mother, through hustling drugs in the"hood" to taking nine bullets in a hit, 50 Cent has had more obstacles than most and has had much to fear. His responses and the responses of characters from history in parallel circumstances brought to life here by Robert Greene in this excellent book are where the lessons lie. Enjoy. Use the lessons well. Remove the "fear" and get further and higher than you ever thought possible.
