Fans who already revere this album as one of the greatest of the 70s and of all time will be happy to hear the incredible remastering from original tapes. Damn, it sounds bloody amazing. Lunch also. 4.0 out of 5 stars Great album but can't read texts on inner panels, 4 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sundowners (Audio CD)
Very strong album. Quite like it! Hey wait, I love it!! However, very bummer that the inner panels are designed so badly that the text is unreadable. Too dark background and too dark, too small texts. Too painful to even try and read. How did that pass quality control?! Best just to listen and enjoy. Hope the band continues with this energy and creativity.. Next time, better packaging..

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware, 4 Jun. 2015

This review is from: Son of a Beach Boy (Paperback)
The writing style is horrendous, like "written" by a fifteen year old boy. It seems like the author's spoken words were recorded and then quickly transcribed verbatim with no effort to mold it into a cohesive and readable story. Bad grammar that often makes no sense even if read three or four times, no logical flow of story, the narrative often jumps wildly, sharply and annoyingly between various events, points, trains of thought. A very difficult and uncomfortable read. Size of the text is very large as are the margins so the average word count per page is about 250. Author (not a real son, by the way) gushes way too much as to become over the top and sickening and he talks too much about his own life of drugs, girls and stupid behavior. Regarding Dennis, most of us already know that he had a good heart. Author expounds on that fact mainly by way of relating specific incidents of Dennis' generosity. However, author pushes this a bit too hard and it seems that a deeper story and understanding is missing Sadly there is very little new information here except more incidents of extreme behavior, lots of girls, drugs and nothing about music. Waste of money, at least for hardcore fans of Dennis who know already about his lifestyle and of course love him and his music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back to Bagism, 2 Jun. 2015
This review is from: Wedding Album (Audio CD)
Let's face it, this is not something you will play often. That isn't the point. Try to appreciate this as a document, a statement, a larf, a poke in the eye and another bizarre piece of performance art from the brilliant and wacky couple. At the same J&Y were completely sincere: Side One is also a love song. I applaud them for being able to bare their souls and laugh at themselves at the same time: therein lies the art and the message. In my mind, this, Two Virgins and Life with the Lions are all works of brilliance. These albums and John/Yoko challenged the way we perceive music, art, politics, humanity and more. Back to Bagism!

Oh and check the inspiration for Side 1, "John and Yoko", Stan Freberg's "John and Marsha":

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of all time ever., 24 Jan. 2015

Bloody amazing one of the best albums of 1971 / 1972. Great songs, great songwriter plus Elton's band and Elton's producer Gus Dudgeon. So if you like the EJ and Tumbleweed Connection albums you love this. Amazing production, amazing remaster , it explodes out of the speakers..Beatle-y also, it is simply killer.. Thanks very mucho to Esoteric and Fly for this welcome and brilliant collaboration. Damn, still rips my head off after 43 years of listening!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential but minor quibbles, 11 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Kevin D. Rathert gets it mostly right in his excellent review. Here is an essential guide and reference for all fans of this period and area / these areas of music. What an amazing work and an endless adventure. My favourite part is discovering previously unknown (to me) singles by some of my favourite artists; Blinkers/Godley Creme to name one and there are many many more.

Of course with a project of such vast scale and scope it is impossible to be 100% accurate and complete, therefore is expected that there will be holes, omissions, mistakes, errors and there are. Most of them are minor but one biggie really jumped off the page: Chris White of Mouth Music fame is not the same as Chis White of the Zombies. Two different guys! This true fact is common knowledge (up there with the two Ian Andersons and the two Dave Stewarts) so I am surprised to see this mistake here. Not only that, the author dismisses Mouth Music as mostly filler when in actual fact, in my opinion and in the opinion of the many other fans, it is packed with great songs and is a fun ride from start to finish. (Evidence: the hardcore Japanese fanatics at EM records who reissued it on CD with the twelve extra songs.)

There are several/numerous more instances where the author unfairly dismisses albums, songs or records that I (and many others) think are exceptional. That is unfortunate because the negative reviews come across as authoritative rather than just the author's opinion. It's puzzling that he does this and in fact sad because someone might read a negative review, believe it without question, then would ignore / not investigate the record. It seems so unnecessary. For me, this detracts from the fun somewhat.

Nevertheless he gets so much right, mainly with reference data, and compiles so much detailed information beyond anything thought humanly possible, these quibbles are minor in comparison. This mind boggling publication is something you will want to keep handy and plunder for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody brilliant!, 18 Jun. 2014
Bloody brilliant album and kudos again to Esoteric. (The) Dave Stewart is the main genius here, playing, arranging, conceptualizing, plus cohort singer the heavenly Barbara Gaskin. If Planer wrote the texts, he's a genius too. Damn, this album can be played over and over and never gets tiring. You can be a fan of Caravan/Stewart/Gaskin/Egg/Hatfield/Health/Hillage or Pepper/Piper/Satanic/Sorrow/Submarine or XTC/Dukes and everything around and between and very dig this album on many levels. Even today it still sounds fresh, fun and exciting. One minor/major snag though: why oh why did the compilers neglect to include the amazing "My White Bicycle" 12 inch mix? One of the hottest killer-est 12 inch singles ever. So, five stars for the music, remaster, bonus tracks, notes and reintroduction of this masterpiece to a thirsty world. For the MWB12 oversight, there is only one word: bummer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Long lost psychedelic classic, 4 May 2014
This review is from: THE NEW HOVERING DOG (Audio CD)
This is one of the trippiest albums ever. Like a soundtrack to a weird and crazy dream. Eclectic and full of surprises, totally another world. BJ is much more than a great pedal steel guitarist, he is an adventurer, conceptualist and brilliant all around musician. This one slipped under the radar when released but thank the gods of musical justice it is now available again. Dive in, dive up, let your mind be blown and hover away..

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavenly, 4 May 2014
This review is from: Bored Civilians (Audio CD)
One of the best acoustic-y folky albums of this period. Melodious, beautiful harmonies, great songs. Essential for fans of Fotheringay, McGuinness Flint, Audience, Gay and Terry Woods, Fairport, Fuschia, Eclection, Mellow Candle etc etc etc. Their version of "Peace in the End" is heavenly, as is the entire album..
