I was expecting this to be an entertaining piece of historical crime fiction. It's certainly that, and it delivers in spades. But it's far more than that. It's no less than a reconstruction of how the crime novel in English - and in particular the idea of the 'great detective' - was born. Although it's a real-life case study, it reads very like a harrowing thriller. Best thing I've read in a long time.
