The Lost World of Bletchley Park: The Illustrated History of the Wartime Codebreaking Centre
The Lost World of Bletchley Park: The Illustrated History of the Wartime Codebreaking Centre
by Sinclair McKay
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £19.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Saturation point for Bletchley watchers?, 29 Dec. 2013

Another hardback (and front) book which would have benefited by concurrent printing in paperback (see my review of Burges). However, this one is easier to handle, and, as ,an attractive book. As to be expected from this author, it is well researched and presented.

One would anticipate after all the many accounts of Bletchley Park already published. that not much more could be written. However, McKay has once more dug out more of its fascinating history. Each of his many excellent pictures tells a story, but for me, the best comprised images (at last) of the whole site and its relationship to the outside world. Buildings tell a story, so far absent from any of the previous books. Will he find yet more hidden material?

5.0 out of 5 stars Victorian eccentric or major arts influence?, 29 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Was this intended as a coffee table book, to impress visitors? Its weight and size rules it out as bedside reading. Why do publishers persist in adding thick cardboard covers to an already over-sized book? Could we ask for all such tomes to be printed concurrently in paperback, please?

However, it is impressive, in content and presentation. If ever an artist deserved this wide canvas, Burges does. His faux medieval decoration is amazing, as is his fairy tale architecture. He was fortunate to have the patronage of the very rich Bute, who indulged him totally in his fantasies. You have to visit Castell Coch and Cardiff Castle to appreciate fully his follies. This book does him justice. A must for all Burges watchers

Well and sensitively written. Recommended reading for keyboard, and wider musical audiences. Good to find a paperback book - see my review of the Burges tome

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic viewing, 25 Oct. 2013

BBC do not do this quality of writing and acting any more. Charmingly underplayed and witty with some great plots and casting. But, I have found, as with most boxed sets, at least one episode refuses to play.

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential guide for buildings lovers., 25 Oct. 2013

Splendid update of Pevsner. I have found so far accurate descriptions of buildings, their history, place in the landscape and their designers. Any tour of the towns with tours included will enhance the visit. But the immense amount of information now included has its price: the books are big and heavy. Pevsner was a genuine pocket book..

Pleasant little book, and the cat pictures are charming. Not so sure about the verse, though. Good pillow case filler

5.0 out of 5 stars Socila history at its best, 25 Oct. 2013

An excellent, well researched and highly readable account of a remarkable woman and her family. Forces the reader to go and see for him/herself - and they are not disappointed. Would have benefited by one or two maps, enabling the reader to locate her buildings and re-routed road. And some recent photos of the church

Prompt delivery. Easy to load. Long life. But, too expensive. HP have establshed a monopoly by making it unclonable. That will priobably rule out HP when choosing my next printer

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Pub Guide 2013, 28 Mar. 2013

It is now too packed with content as to be difficult to search through. Mattters made worse by grouping some counties together, which further discourages searching. The publishers now charge pubs for main entries. Pubs which refuse are relegated to the also ran sections. Thus, many good pubs - equal or better in value than some main entries - appear as if they were second division. And, as such, are denied the full description, which includes valuable information

The Gude would benefit from removing the many stablishments included which are clearly no longer pubs - they are posh eateries with perhaps a token bar. Removal would allow space for some very good also rans to appear in the main section.

Despite the above critical comment, I have found the Guide to be the best and most consistent way to a good pub, in a new area.

Yellow book is a must for garden lovers. After many years of publication, its editors have now got presentation as good asa it will get. Although its price is modest for the information it contains, local booklets (in counties) are also published which are free. Try tourist informatioin centres.
