Star Wars: Darth Plagueis
Star Wars: Darth Plagueis
by James Luceno
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Phantom Menace" explained... finally, 6 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the book to get if you have a lot of questions about what led to the events in "The Phantom Menace". Or if interested in "the creation of" Palpatine, the Sith Lord, and his apprentice Darth Maul. And how Count Dooku left the Jedi. And perhaps even more interesting, how the rise of the Sith, documented in the first three movies, were planned millenia before the movies were taking place. Learn about Darth Plagueis the Wise, as he is referred to by Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith, and so much more. Great reading, that does not feel like a spin-off, but more like the missing piece of the saga, nicely blending into the events of "The Phantom Menace", and several time periods leading up to that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Burke does it again, 30 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Paradigms & Storylines (Audio CD)
Among the 10 best of 2011, much in the line of his debut. Melodies are melodic and fairly simple, mostly, and his voice is just great. Here's an easily recogniseable singer, with something to say. Best work is still with Darwins Radio however.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best release of 2011!, 30 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Memories in My Head (Audio CD)
Great EP. Only three songs, but they are long, and they are just great. Riverside sound purposely like on their two first albums from ten years ago again, and the melodies and moods are as good as ever, if not better. If you miss Pink Floyd try this. This is no clone, however... there's way to much originality for that. Great polish prog band.

2.0 out of 5 stars A dissapointment, 30 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Raised In Captivity (Audio CD)
This is a step back from all other Wetton-albums, both solo and Asia etc. Production and sound is OK, but the songs are melodically his most boring to date. Buy the latest Asia album instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview, 30 Jan. 2012

Gives a quick overview, and the possibility to get into more details afterwards. The map doesn't seem to detailed, - that remains to be seen at the destination shortly. But to even find a map, coming with the book is nice :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Re-Hackett, 5 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
His last album got the best reviews in many years, and it seems this one is even more popular, some say it's his best album ever. I must say, while I find it OK, I'm not that impressed. It's diverse because of the many different genres, and that seems to have been Hackett's formular for some time now... so no surprises there. I really can't hear why the last two albums should be better than the previous two... while the quality as alwys with Hackett is OK, there's also more quantity of songs on these last four releases. I hope we'll get another "Darktown" one day, or that he'll find his way back to the more adventorous progrock of his early solo material. Those were more symphonic, beautiful, often strange and surprising, and sometimes even a funny listen!

4.0 out of 5 stars Get the Special Edition!, 5 Nov. 2011

This is like a personal best of for me... all the favorites "in new clothes". When songs are re-released I always find them most interesting when the differences are more obvious than the similarities. Why buy the same songs again otherwise? On the regular edition you get this orchetral rendition of the songs. Gabriels voice is the most recognisable part, so I prefer disc 2 of the Special Edition, when you can really hear the different treatment these songs has been given. Plus a bonus vocal track. Besides you get the possibility to download the tracks of both CDs as well in high quality. The nice surprice here was another track not on the other CD's :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice collector set, 5 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had the original album, so didn't use to much time on the remastered stuff. It's always those extra recordings I find interesting in this kind of boxes. Disc 2+3 contains several demoes etc. of the album tracks, ordered as on the album. They are OK, but not that different, so the real bonus was actually disc 4. Tjhje live recording was interesting, even though the quality was poor. For a regular DVD release it wouldn't be appropriate with such low quality, but it was a nice additioin on a collectors box like this, to finally see them live in the early days :- The interviews also gave a good idea of IQ in the early days, but the best part of this whole box set, was actually the MP3's on this disc. Older than the demoes on disc 3+4, more different from the final mixes, and therefore much more interesting (I made a fifth disc for these tracks). That's the real treasure for collectors, I'd say. This disc also contains socalled multitrack files for "Corners"... unfortunatedly the program for playing these were outdated (at least on a Mac). Mike Oldfield did the same years back, and it was great fun, so a pity the software didn't work :-( But all in all a good purchase for collectors, especially now, that the price is better ;-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value for your money..., 20 Sept. 2011

...especially if you don't have this release on CD allready. I had, but found it worth buying anyway. The booklet is nice, but it was the bonus material that seemed most interesting. However, most of the tracks appeared more or less on the orignal album, just with differnt names.

What turned out to be the real bonus was actually seeing disc three's live recording from april 1979. So serious and 70's! Nice! The same disc had 5.1 surround mixes of half of the bonus tracks, but not of the album itself... strange choise! But good value.

If you already have the standard edition of this album, as I had, you're probably most interested in the bonus mateial. If you haven't, but like Frankie, there's really good value for your money here. The second disc alone was worth the purchase for me, as it is full of previously unreleased material, especially if you don't have those old cassettes. Even if you have, it's nice to get it in this great quality... don't forget that half of CD1 is bonus material as well :-) And in a nice packaging to.
