5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing and empathising account. You really care about the victims and survivors. Excellent., 14 May 2015

This is a really excellent book. It alternates the action between the U.S., the ship, the UBoat, intelligence rooms in the UK and Germany. Thus, the narrative moves quickly and gives you the context in which decisions are being made and events happening while other events are taking place at the same time. The author gives us mini biographies of several families and other passengers from before their fateful voyage, whilst on the ship, onthe fateful day and afterwards which makes their various deaths seem even more heartbreaking. Totally engrossing. I read it in two days!

1.0 out of 5 stars The Day I Wasted............, 4 May 2015

What a terrible book! badly written; cliche ridden and I guessed the "suprise" ending by chapter two. Totally unloveable/unbelievable characters and plot - rugged heroes, vulnerable but intelligent, attractive women and oh, yes, lovely horses. Lots and lots about horses and lots and lots about urban trendy folk. Utter dross, i cannot BELIEVE the hype about this book! it's terrible!

Engrossing. Interesting scenarios. I liked the fact that the character of the title was less than perfect. Excellent

5.0 out of 5 stars utterly absorbing and a real thriller!, 1 Feb. 2015
This review is from: The Crooked House (Kindle Edition)
This book was totally engrossing. I am always on the go but I could not put this book down and spent the whole of one Saturday reading it - to the extent that if I tried to do something else, i found myself resenting not being able to continue with the book. Utterly absorbing and well written - it draws you into the community and the events of the night 13 years previously. Highly recommended.

Readable as ever but I agree with the reviews that say his style, plot and characters are getting not only very similar but way over the top, especially the way everyone involved who manages to stay alive, always get off scott-free! But then the whole set ups are pretty unbelievable so I guess you just have to roll with it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring..., 8 Oct. 2014
This is certainly not an adult film and I doubt it would entertain children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drop the Romance and i'd give it 5!, 20 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I did really enjoy the book and would have given it five stars but for two things 1) i don't mind reading "gritty" or "authentic" books with a bit of violence in but this was one of the most gory books i have ever read (and i read Val McDermid and Mo Hayder), please less graphic next time? and 2) the really REALLY annoying on/off, will they (sleep together)/won't they"romance"/twee flirtation between Gilchrist and one of the female Characters - boring, totally unbelievable and not at ALL interesting or plot enhancing. Drop it T F Muir...please??? On the plus side, i do think the female characters (apart from said lady) are very well written. I just can't stand this trivial strand in the book.........

5.0 out of 5 stars gripping family and social history, 11 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this compelling reading, from the spiritualist daughter of a miner in the early 1900s, right up to the present day. It's character "driven" but this is set against social/political and economic history - the family are therefore both a counterbalance and part of, the bigger picture. Wonderful stories, sad and amusing, deep and thoughtful. I finished this long book in a few days and i now miss the family! Excellent and highly recommended (excellent on the kindle as it means it's not too heavy to carry around :-)
