5.0 out of 5 stars Very practical, 26 Sep 2013

Very practical guide to common components. I'm really looking forward to next Volume 2.

Very handy real-world reference. Even though I've been involved in electronics for years I found some really good stuff in this.

Works fine on my (older) laptop (windows 7). Doesn't work at all on my HP desktop at work (also Windows 7). Works on my older XP desktop but very slow.

Always been a fan of Silverberg. I bought this just to get a copy of 'Nightwings' (lost my other copy a few years ago). That alone was worth the price as it's in my top 10 sci-fi novels.

What can I say, the guys a legend. Lots of bizarre (but informative) stuff. I know Shatner is a nut but you can't help loving him. A must for Shatner fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool, works well..., 13 Sep 2013

Pretty good. It works well. The required app (a slight extra expense) works well and allows you to browse files directly on a USB stick or associate files with apps. I use it with my Nexus 7 (which I love but doesn't have a micro sd slot).

3.0 out of 5 stars Good on early years, 25 Mar 2013

Excellent history of early Microsoft years, especially MITS era. The rest is 'meh', mildly interesting but not too much substance...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read but..., 4 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I remember a lot of the Atari history and have owned a number of Atari computers and enjoyed reading about their creation. Lots of stories, well constructed narrative with good timeline etc. Nearly 800 pages (text plus large picture selections at ends of chapters), this book is certainly comprehensive. While quite readable it could have done with firmer editorial hand (some of the writing is sloppy). Also the largest flaw is the disregard with which the pictures were reproduced. Potentially the best part of the book, the large selection of photographs are very poorly reproduced. I can understand that for cost reasons only black and white images were used but I do think that within this constraint the pictures could still have been better. I would still highly recommend the book to those interested in Atari history and would put it on a par with Brian Bagnall's history of Commodore (2nd edition) although the production quality of that book is far superior.

Advanced C.: Food for the Educated Palate
by Narain Gehani
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Gem of a book..., 19 Feb 2009
One of my favourite C books, great on pointers, pointers to functions and a variety of advanced topic such as how stuff is stored in memory, dynamic memory, stack usage, function calling and parameter passing etc. Assumes you have a good grasp of 'C' to start with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stross, great new talent........, 17 Nov 2008
This review is from: Singularity Sky (Paperback)
Loved this book (and Iron Sunrise). Definitely the most imaginative and exciting writer around at the moment. Lacks a little polish, maybe too prolific, still gets 5 stars for being so darn interesting/exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare thing, a readable book on software..., 26 May 2008
What can I say, if you're in the business you already know who Joel is. This is a nice distillation of all his early online stuff. It's beginning to date a little but still a great read, next version please Joel!
