3.0 out of 5 stars Lacklustre performance of great music, 30 Jun. 2011
Some of the singing is decided rough and the early 70,s recorded sound a bit leaden and congested. I will certainly be looking to acquire a better recording of this work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something special, 15 Jun. 2011
This collection of key Boulez works under the baton of the man himself is simply indispensible. "Le Visage nuptial" is an outstanding masterpiece of the vocal repertoire, and quite stunning here. None of these performances have ever been bettered, either by Boulez himself or any of the rare and brave performers who will tackle Boulez's music while is still around to hear their efforts and comment on them. If mid-to-late twentieth century music holds no horrors for you and you don't have this, you must acquire it! Oh, and it's steal at this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer bliss, will lift your mood every time., 22 Mar. 2010
I first encountered Fairuz about 20 years ago. I bought a 7" vinyl disc from the early 60's in a secondhand shop and have been smitten ever since. Fairuz is simply peerless. A wonderful vocal stylist and unsurpassed in those subtle decorations and improvisations which are admired in Arabic music. This would be a fairly good introduction to her recording career that began, incredibly, in the 40's! But where is "Habbeytak Bessayf", one of her greatest achievements? I can also live without "Wahdon". I know it is one of her most famous late songs, but its jazzy style is just not my thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oopsadaisy, 30 Nov. 2008
It is not an easy matter to mix the erotic and the comic, but Bruce is a master. Sad to note that even with an 18 cert, the more explicit scenes in both of these films have been cut. OK, the anal penetration in "Super 8 1/2" is near the knuckle, but there have been scenes of ejaculation in several mainstrem releases over the last couple of years. Get your act together BBFC, this smacks slightly of homophobia!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonus, 30 Nov. 2008
The Ashkenazy interpretations are are a mixed bag. In no.s 2 & 3 (recorded first) he and Solti appear to have very contrary ideas about the works and pull in different directions too often. The performance of the acerbic first is much more successful.
However, the violin concerto recordings, with the brilliant Kyung-Wha Chung, are the main attraction here and are simply indispensable. Her recording of the 2nd is superb (much better than her later recording with Rattle for EMI) and of the 1st the best there is. This strange work of Bartok's early maturity, unpublished until 1956, is lifted well beyond its Straussian origins and made much more than the mere curiousity it is still often treated as. It even blows away the Menuhin recordings.
Buy this for the violin concertos and treat the piano concertos as an interesting bonus only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't I have more than 5 stars?, 30 Nov. 2008
In my view the most consistantly excellent set of Bartok's quartet recordings and my personal favouite. It did have a very short life on Erato before that label was swallowed by Warner. All credit to Warner for reissuing at this great price, but it is true that Erato had no time to promote and so an accident of timing has prevented these recordings becoming classics, as they deserve. You will not find no.s 3,4 or 6 done better by anyone, anywhere in the catalogue. Buy this now while you still can!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Solti, 30 Nov. 2008
Georg Solti was a wonderful interpreter of Bartok as a conductor (though a dreadful one as a pianist!) All of these recordings are from late in his career, I think the earliest is from 1980. You will hear some so called experts say his LSO recordings from the 1960s are better, don't listen. Hearing these recordings, it is as if Solti's entire life experience of conducting these masterpieces has been distilled into that moment. Essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where are my superlatives?, 30 Nov. 2008
This is another incredible Bartok bargain on CD. When these 3 discs were available seperately at full price they were unmissable, now you would have to be insane not to acquire this. Every recording in this box is the among finest one you can find of these works, in particular the two ballets are performances beyond compare and the quality of the recording is state of the art. However, I could have done without another "Kossuth", which for me is a work of only purely academic interest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sad disappointment, 30 Nov. 2008
The ABQ are unsurpassed in their championing of the 20th century string quartet. However, this set is a disappointment. In almost every aspect, from energy to an authentic folky twang, they are outdone by other ensembles. The best performances here are of the Debussyan first quartet and the second, rooted in but looking beyond the enchanted world of "Bluebeard's Castle" and "The Wooden Prince". If these are the quartets you are really after then these are a good choice, otherwise try instead the Emerson (DG) or the Keller (Warner Classics).

5.0 out of 5 stars True genius and a great bargain, 30 Nov. 2008
This has to be one of the greatest bargains you can now get on CD.Sandor studied piano with Bartok himself and was a career long champion of his music. I have to confess to possible bias, as Sandor is particularly good in some of my favourite works, such as "3 folksongs from Csik", the 3 Etudes and the sonata. If only every great modern composer had such an advocate, a lot of magnificent music would have more currency.
It is true that it is far from "complete" and not quite of the stature of the Kocsis survey on Philips, but that stretched to 9 discs and is currently unavailable. BUY THIS NOW!
