The Kitab-I-Aqdas (Forgotten Books)
The Kitab-I-Aqdas (Forgotten Books)
by Bahaullah
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.69

4.0 out of 5 stars A More Balanced Review, 2 May 2015
Many of the reviews of this edition do not do this publication justice. The reviewers appear to be dubious as to the value of the physical book and the publishers motives. They point to the fact that free versions are available.

It should be pointed out that Forgotten Books appears to have a mission to bring to the fore those books that are less well known today. "Forgotten" may be an unfortunate word in some contexts. The publishers scan old editions and clean them up for publication. It should be noted that Forgotten Books make it clear that they provide downloads of all their books for free at www.forgottenbooks.org (see "Look Inside").

Overall, it is a nice clean edition which is reasonably well presented. It is a useful resource. Those who want to understand the Bahai will need to take time and perhaps take a lot of notes. Personally, I find this sort of intense study easier on paper than on a Kindle.

This review is from: The Defence (Paperback)
Really excellent thriller. Most courtroom dramas can be quite slow and controlled. This one couples a pacey plot with the best of courtroom thrillers. Great characters and lots of humour. There is a Chandleresque quality brought up to date. This is a great book. Do yourself a favour and buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally Pointless Device - A Great Way to Waste Time and Money, 29 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a pretty pointless device. I could see the point if you could write notes on the (expensive) paper and then later transfer it to your iOS device. But you need to carry the pen, the special paper and your device. Why bother? Save a lot of cash and and buy a $30 keyboard/cover for your iPad. Take notes on that and save the extra step. This device was really not thought through. The old pens stored info which could be downloaded later. Presumably this move was due to the fact that the second generation pens failed (particularly the LED screen) and they were trying to avoid this problem.
If you want a device simply because you can't have too many, this is fine. If you are seeking ways to be more productive - run away!

1.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Even Think of Buying, 11 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This watch is a total piece of junk. It will not maintain its connection with an iPhone 4. You cannot send or receive text messages never mind emails. If it doesn't do that what use is it? It is really an old fashioned digital watch that does nothing else. The instructions are on a postage size piece of paper. It should come with a magnifying glass. If you can manage to read the instructions you will find that they are not even written using decent English. There is no brand name, no website and no support. Needless to say, I am sending this back.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rattling Good Read, 2 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed this book. It is real history set in the time that the Ancient Romans ruled Britain. Boudicca was the Queens of the Iceni. She lead a revolt against her Roman overloads.

It is a stirring story of rebellion, destiny, battle and retribution. Much of it is told in the present tense which brings drama to the tale.

The writer's knowledge and enthusiasm really comes across.

If you fancy a rattling read of real life adventure buy this book.

The PCOS diet: Eating Well For a Healthier You (All you need for a healthy woman Book 1)
The PCOS diet: Eating Well For a Healthier You (All you need for a healthy woman Book 1)

5.0 out of 5 stars If you suffer from PCOS or know someone who does, you should buy this book, 2 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great book. It is not a diet book for everyone. It is for women living with PCOS. I was looking for something to help the woman in my life. I was impressed right from the start when it stated "This book is dedicated to all the brave women out there who wish to take back control of their bodies through intelligent planning and lifestyle modifications".

The book starts out by explaining more about PCOS. It really helps that the writer is a sufferer too. PCOS can cause some real problems but it can be managed. It also helps to know that it is so common. One woman in fifteen has a chance of manifesting symptoms. The section on symptoms is also helpful (though many will be past the diagnosis stage). It is still helpful to understand all that may be happening to your body. The key message is that living a healthier life will help you live with PCOS.

This leads on to the second part of the book: the PCOS Diet. This contains some great healthy diet principles. It doesn't set out loads of recipes that no one will ever follow. Is shows you how to build your own meals around the principles.

If you suffer from PCOS or know someone who does, you should buy this book. It will make a difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Anyone who Needs to Let Go of the Hurt, 2 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really loved this book. Everyone has someone that is in their life, or had been in their life, that they need to forgive to move on from.

Let's face it - who hasn't been hurt, perhaps deeply hurt by someone? If you are you must be an exceptional and unusual person. Not forgiving someone is, as this books shows really well, not something that will hurt that other but is maintaining the negative feelings within yourself. In short, you are continuing to hurt yourself. This book is so good at bringing out those simple truths. Once you read it on the page you say, "My goodness, isn't that obvious" and the next thing you say to yourself is "Why did I never think of it like that"?

Like everyone I have held on to hurt. It is almost like holding on to the hurt will keep something alive. But really, it just eats away at you.

The book shows you the value of forgiving and bringing a paradigm shift to your thinking. One thing that it did bring home to me is that sometimes to forgive another is to forgive yourself. Deep down it is easy to think "why did I allow myself to be in that situation".

If you are holding on to some resentment (and, again, how many of us aren't?) this book is for you. Even if you don't think every day about a hurt it is well worth reading. Like many, I have had old and deeply buried grudges that were eating away inside me.

Buy this book and let them go.

I always look forward to reading anything by Tony Judt. He also provokes thought even if I don't agree with everything (or sometimes, anything) he says. However he is never boring. He mixes scholarship with a real and accessible thesis. The problem with this book is that it is dated. By its very nature it has been overtaken by events and particularly the Euro and the financial meltdown. It is a useful history of the EU up to 2000 but there prognosis is defeated by the passage of time.

2.0 out of 5 stars It start well but ..., 26 July 2012

This review is from: The Blood Banker (Kindle Edition)
This book started well with decent characters and a mixture of action and high finance. It was a bit like the author was intent in including all the elements he had been told make up a best seller. However it was initially worth reading. As the book progressed the early pattern was repeated. Other characters were introduced but were not developed. The last part of the book simply ran out of steam. It appeared that the author didn't know how to bring it to an end or got bored. I had to force myself to finish it and I am sorry that I did. This author can write. What he needs is a good editor to point out the obvious fragility of the plot and structure.
