5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing DVD that should be shown on national TV!, 6 Jun 2012

If like me you love sharks this DVD will make for difficult viewing. The plight of our cartilaginous cousins is one that should be widely appreciated and this film helps to spread the news of their fight for survival at the hands of greedy and often criminal fishermen. I found there was a little too much coverage of the film maker for my liking but I guess it is a film about how he came to make a film about sharks as much as it is about the catastrophe that is currently befalling these creatures. Some of the images are heart-breaking and don't make for comfortable viewing, but images like that need to be seen to appreciate the plight of sharks. So, this is a film that isn't so much an informative guide to sharks, more a plea for people to understand the damage that is being inflicted upon these extraordinary creatures.

If you're a fan of submarine films here's a must have for the collection. Some great sequences and interesting under the ice photography. It's worth buying the film just to see the always excellent Patrick McGoohan and his table thumping 'Get me there' outburst. It's a well made film with a plausible (to me anyway) dialogue. There are the embarrassing crappy planes at the end of the film but it doesn't spoil the movie. Boys movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wow! This film is dull!, 7 Aug 2011

I found this film so stodgy and slow going that I turned it off after 3/4hr. The only glimmer of light was the unusually mature and charismatic performance by George Cole who must have been something like 15 yrs old when he made this film. I'll give it another go in a few days but I'm not hopeful...it's no wonder I'd never heard of it or seen it on TV!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty war drama., 3 Aug 2011

Burt Lancaster plays the determined and cool headed saboteur causing havoc to the Nazis and trying to foil an attempt by the Nazis to steal a large collection of paintings by French masters. Never has there been so much grime in a film! Coal dust, grease, smoke and gun powder! John Frankenheimer is the director and provides top notch cinematography and does a great job keeping the action rolling along. I think it would have been very interesting to have seen this film made with a Frenchman in the lead role, but Burt Lancaster puts in a totally believable performance and looks as though he's been working with trains his whole life. It's a great film, a war film with a slightly different perspective i.e. that of the French, and one that salutes the incredibly brave French saboteurs of WWII.

A really great BBC production of the classic novel. Brilliant casting and dialogue, well acted and directed. CGI effects are top notch. I remember watching this production one Christmas on TV and thinking at the time it was excellent, and indeed it is. Can't quite fathom why this doesn't get more airings on TV - TV schedulers are a law unto themselves!! One gripe - the all too common issue (esp with BBC productions) of having the music drowning out the dialogue, argh so annoying, it's inexcusable and extremely frustrating. It's a curse of contemporary TV! I still give this film five stars though!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very unusual film!, 18 Jun 2011
I'd never heard of this film let alone seen it but was steered towards it by a barman during a conversation about great films. So glad to have now seen it. Tim Roth plays a man born on a passenger liner in the year 1900, who then lives aboard the ship and becomes a formidable pianist. It's a very unusual film. Anyone who loves music or has an artistic side will love this. The fact that this film is not widely known via TV is testament to how dumbed down mainstream TV is...it makes me despair that films like Predator meets Alien is shown about 20 times a year and films like this are never shown...never! Thank god (or Amazon) that we can buy affordable DVDs and entertain ourselves. A really good film and recommended!

This is quality. Toshiro Mifune is excellent and believable as the wandering samurai and the rest of the casting is top notch. It's such an interesting area - the Japanese Western/East meets West/Oriental Cowboy. A very good film - well filmed and directed, it's a must have for film lovers I would say. So glad to have found it here on Amazon and to have it in my collection.
