5.0 out of 5 stars V fine large watch, 21 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Incredible value at about £95 incl postage, and a v fine looking large watch. A point to note is that what appears to be the second hand is actually the stop watch hand, the real second hand being on the lower subsidiary dial. Leaving the stop watch permanently on effectively gives a large second hand but might drain the battery (though it has a 5 year life).

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing & Convincing, 21 Jan 2014

An excellent, highly readable account of how political ideals spread throughout the English speaking world. How the author, an exceptionally able "tweet every 15 mins" MEP who should be in parliament, finds time to write books like this is beyond me.

3.0 out of 5 stars The cynical amoral world of modern politics laid bare, 6 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This deeply depressing book confirms worst fears about modern British politics and its supporting caste in the civil service, public institutions and the parliamentary lobby. None of them, including the author, has done a proper job or lived a life comparable to that of ordinary voters. The book shows what a cynical, duplicitous, amoral, self-serving lot they are. RIP kindness, humanity, courage and conviction. Three stars because the book is reasonably well written and brutally frank.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very fine but, for me, overly dense book, 21 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a wonderfully researched book by a distinguished and outstandingly gifted author. However, I feel some people, who necessarily read for recreational as well as educational reasons, may find it too much to take in. There are of course many dramatis personae, yet the text is so finely honed that 100% concentration is needed. It would make an excellent audio book to listen to when you can give it undivided attention, e.g. on a long car journey. As for the story itself, the Gods tossed a coin, and the political and diplomatic intelligentsia of the day let it happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine read, 28 May 2013

Modern social history, both poignant and delightful, about a coming of age and love in the war. If anything the Audible version is better, because it is read beautifully and with great feeling. Leaves one missing the lost-forever values and decencies of our grandparents' generation.

V comfortable, cool bike shoe for general non fanatic use. Good value and not flashy. Fine to walk on. Chunky sole can impede pushing into toe clips?

Crete: The Battle and the Resistance
Crete: The Battle and the Resistance

5.0 out of 5 stars Take this book on holiday to Crete!, 3 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Germans took Crete by the narrowest of margins, and we knew when and where they were coming. With the benefit of hindsight that armchair warriors have, it was largely a debacle. It is hard to understand how Freyburg and senior regimental officers lost it, even though British military kit was shocking (we didn't produce a decent machine gun or tank during the entire war). Yet in spite of it all, heroes and characters abounded, both Cretan and British, and the loyalty of the Cretans is remarkable. My favourite is John Pedlebury, the former Curator of Knossos, who left his glass eye on his desk when in the mountains, and who now lies in Suda Bay War Cemetary. Take this book to Crete as an anti-dote to the tackiness of the coastal resorts, and travel into the interior to discover the real Cretan people.
