5.0 out of 5 stars 16 great performances from Julie London..., 9 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a 1988 compilation done by Alan Dell and comprises 16 tracks the normal for the series back then. The recordings date from 1955 to 1964. The transfers are very good quality as Alan would have had access to the original recordings. The majority of the tracks come from the album "Whatever Julie Wants" which was released by Liberty Records under catalog number LRP-3192 as a monophonic recording and catalog number LST-7192 in stereo in 1961.
Alan Dell provides the interesting liner notes. This is one of a series he produced that gave the CD buyer access to long out of print material the likes of which he played on his radio programmes. Track a copy down, listen and enjoy to the sultry voice of Julie London. Thank you Alan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the box..., 9 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This pen does exactly what it is supposed to do and comes in a very handy tube that can be carried in the pocket or case and allows for reapplication later in the day. At the moment the person using the pen has no problems to report. Price wise the item is the price we expected to pay having looked in the department stores etc. The product itself
does not cause any reaction and is not too light being the lightest in the range. Very pleased with the purchase.

SUN2159
This CD was originally released on the Sunflower budget label in England. The 19 tracks come from an eclectic mix of performers and the compositions include many well known numbers and a few slightly lesser known ones too. The reason I bought this is because of the different styles of music given over to the performing of the Gershwin songbook. This is not a predictable compilation by any means and that is why I have enjoyed it so much. Where else could you have jazz; opera; crooners; duets; big bands; theatre; brass band & be bop. Informative liner notes. Excellent sound transfers. Shop around for the best value on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vernon Sewell on dry land..., 7 July 2014

This review is from: Counterspy [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
Like many collectors of British films I have been waiting for the release of various Merton Park Sudios films. This DVD has the comedy thriller Counterspy released in 1953 and it is an entertaining and often fast moving 66 minutes. The star of the film is Dermot Walsh and he is joined by his wife Hazel Court in this Vernon Sewell directed film. Dermot Walsh was a very reliable actor as was Hazel Court and as a result they appeared in a great many British films.

Vernon Sewell's other films at MPS were partly on the sea so this is a change of scene being set on all on land. There are some good character roles such as Madam Del Mar played with gusto by Hermione Baddeley and look out for her dog Mrs Siddons. Excellent photography by AT Dinsdale who worked at Merton Park longer than anyone else and who spent much of his time working on documentaries for the FPG. This is an early 1950s espionage and suspicious foreigners plot and it is good to know that John Penrose was not a villain.

The slimline box and packaging is attractive and the photographs of the UK and USA film posters interesting. The picture quality is excellent and so is the sound and at the asking price is great value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remember Steve Conway..., 7 July 2014
Fans of Steve Conway will enjoy this revised version of the earlier Living Era release. Having said that all these Retrospective revisions do have excellent sound quality, attractive packaging and look like they all belong together. I always could tell from a quick glance at the cover if it was a Living Era CD as well.
Steve Conway still gets plenty of airplay on the Internet radio stations and inspire of dying in 1952 is unlikely to be forgotten with such excellent career compilations as this one. Steve Conway was a big name in vocalists when he was on radio, records and in variety. Price wise very good value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Lawrence...early 1960s..., 7 July 2014

SEPIA 1262

This new Sepia compilation brings together 2 great and relatively early Steve Lawrence solo albums the first from 1960 is United Artists "Lawrence Goes Latin" with the Don Costa orchestra. The cover on the reverse of the liner is that for the mono release. The copy transferred is stereo.
The second album is United Artists "Steve Lawrence Conquers Broadway" dating from 1962. This is a stereo recording with some great stereo separation.
With Steve Lawrence you are always assured of a exemplary performance and given the best of material to sing he delivers the goods song after song. Don Costa is on the first LP but I cannot find a mention of who is arranger/conductor for the second LP. I suspect it is Don Costa on both.
The transfers are very good but I did detect a higher overall volume for the second LP. Both transfers are from stereo LPs. These are transfers from LPs to CD. There is some minor distortion here and there. I always listen to my CDs through headphones and so tend to pick up the slightest defects.
My favourites from "Goes Latin" are "The Sound of Music"& "Tonight" as the arrangements and vocal fitness perfectly.
For "Conquers" my favourites are undoubtedly "If Ever I Would Leave You" & "Begin the Beguine" because of the perfect matching once again.
Attractive packaging and the inclusion of original sleeve notes and cover images make this a great addition to the other Steve Lawrence LPs on Sepia.
Price wise as always a very reasonable asking price.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 formative Shirley Bassey LPs..., 6 July 2014
A most welcome release pairing 2 early Shirley Bassey LPs and providing the tracks from both the UK and USA releases. Great value and excellent transfers. Jackpot have certainly hit gold with these recordings.

Born to Sing the Blues, Shirley Bassey, Released 1957, Recorded 1956 - 1957 for the Philips Records label. Producer John Franz. Born to Sing the Blues is Shirley Bassey's debut album, released on a 10" LP record.

Shirley Bassey had been signed, a year earlier, to Philips by Johnny Franz and had released three singles which failed to chart, including her debut recording "Burn My Candle (At Both Ends)". But 1957 would bring her first chart success with the top ten hit "The Banana Boat Song". Philips were not certain to which market Shirley Bassey should be directed. They had recorded her singing Great American Songbook standards, novelty songs and even the blues. The opening track from the album, the only one previously released, is the title song "Born to Sing the Blues". This track was one of the three singles issued in 1956, as the B-side of "The Wayward Wind". After a successful live performance of the song on UK television, John Franz decided to present her in an album of traditional blues songs. Several of the compositions that appeared on the album were written by W.C. Handy, known as "Father of the Blues". This LP is a much sought after release which fans must have in their collections.

The recordings appear here in mono, no stereo versions are known to exist. In the 1970s Philips did re-issue them in an "electronically enhanced" stereo but these added echoes proved generally unpopular, and these versions have not been re-released.

Side One.

"Born to Sing the Blues" (Lenny Adelson, Imogene Carpenter) - 2.47
"Beale Street Blues" (W.C. Handy) - 3.04
"Wabash Blues" (Fred Meinken, Dave Ringle) - 2.30
"Basin Street Blues" (Spencer Williams) - 2.37

Side Two.

"The Birth of the Blues" (Ray Henderson, Buddy G. DeSylva, Lew Brown) - 4.05
"Careless Love Blues" (Traditional) (W.C. Handy, Spencer Williams, Martha E. Koenig) - 2.37
"Blues in the Night (My Mama Done Told Me)" (Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer) - 3.56
"The St. Louis Blues" (W.C. Handy) - 3.33

Shirley Bassey – vocal
Wally Stott and his Orchestra – arranger, conductor

Lets Face the Music, Columbia, 1962. Produced by Norman Newell. Shirley Bassey had toured with the Nelson Riddle orchestra and this association resulted in the recording sessions. The quality arrangements and strength of vocal delivery make this LP a highlight of the 1960s. The original album was issued in mono and stereo. The stereo version of this album was released on CD in 1999 by EMI. The album was reissued on CD by EMI in 2004 as part of the "60s 2on1" series - featuring 2 albums on 1 CD. The album was paired with the 1961 album "Shirley". However, for this reissue, due to the time restrictions of placing 2 albums on a single CD, "I Should Care" and "The Second Time Around" from "Let's Face The Music" were omitted. Here are the details of the original LP releases...

5.0 out of 5 stars Formative Mark Murphy..., 6 July 2014
This CD comprises 2 early Mark Murphy LPs. Mark Murphy ‎– Mark Murphy's Hip Parade, Capitol Records ‎– T-1299 from 1960. Arranged By Conductor – Bill Holman. And, Rah! On Riverside Records, 1961. Both albums include a mix of standards and jazz compositions. MM collectors will have the originals and probably play them frequently that is the effect he has on you. I think he is the most loved or least understood jazz vocalist of all times. He is still active and there are plenty of films of him singing live on the net. These albums are from his early and formative years and will go down well with those who enjoy the standards and those who recognise his changing vocal style. Pricing great as are the transfers and artwork.

I have actually seen the DVD release. Great picture quality and sound. Original trailer etc. all told a fantastic bargain and I never thought I would have it on a commercial DVD. The film is very much of its time and quite fascinating to see so many well known faces and the London background. This is a film makers fantasy view of London...or is it? Nicely packaged with slimline space saving case. Well worth a purchase. Excellent value.
