This is a huge single-sheet street-plan. It is extremely difficult to use unless you have a large table on which to unfold it, and even then it's a real handful. A street plan in book form is much more convenient.

I got through five of these from two suppliers. Every one was faulty on delivery and had to be sent back. In the end I accepted the inevitable and forked out for a Sony Walkman. It works perfectly and is tangibly in a different class in terms of manufacturing quality.

Printmaking: A Complete Guide to Materials and Processes
Printmaking: A Complete Guide to Materials and Processes

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent single volume review of current printmaking, 25 May 2012
This is a substantial piece of work with a huge amount to offer. There's always a compromise between achieving good coverage of the subject and publishing a book that the punters can afford to buy (and can lift), and this is pretty well the best that I've found so far. You will be quite an experienced and confident printmaker before you need to look for other (more specialised) volumes. As this is written there are second-hand copies knocking about for not much more than ten quid: a steal.

Dresden: Tuesday, 13 February 1945

First, an aside. I'm not interested in military history per se. Military matters leave me cold, to say the least. I bought Taylor's book for two reasons: first, to get a solidly-researched account of the bombing of Dresden, with as much insight as possible into the planning of the operation and the subsequent reactions to it on both sides of the conflict; and secondly, to see if I could tease out some information about how the civilian population of Germany regarded the Nazis at this (or any) stage in the war. So far as the latter is concerned, I also bagged a couple of accounts of the fall of Berlin; but that's another story.

I have to say that this is a remarkable piece of work. Taylor kicks off by presenting a potted history of aerial warfare, and he does so with such verve that I not only stayed awake but found myself quite interested. This in itself is an achievement. When he starts to get his teeth into the central theme of the book, it's clear that he's enjoying himself. One is carried along with the energy of the writing, but the facts are there too, in great abundance. It is obvious that a vast amount of research went into this project, and the situations being described are often complex, but Taylor's writing is never less than vivid, with occasional flashes of black humour. The final triumph of the book is that the author does not tell us what to think. He has, after all, told us enough for us to make up our own minds, and with great intellectual honesty.

A tremendous achievement.

All About Acrylics
All About Acrylics
by Oliver Lohr
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.94

4.0 out of 5 stars Accessible and engaging, 18 April 2012
This review is from: All About Acrylics (Paperback)
I'm not sure whether the German authors wrote this in English or translated it. Either way, the writing is clear and engaging, covering all of the basic information that's needed. The paintings that have been included are clearly intended to illustrate specific techniques, and they do so, whether you like them or not. After all, the authors had access to all of the material they wanted, by virtue of their demonstrable skills as painters; and a glance through any other introductory painting work will reveal a similar variety of relatively intricate figurative work, 'daubs', and everything in between. It is for the authors of works like this to discuss and illustrate the techniques that will allow readers to pursue whatever path they choose with the medium, and the authors of this book do that to good effect. It is not their job to pontificate about what styles of painting are good and which are bad, based on personal taste.

The Acrylics Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist
The Acrylics Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist

Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to fault, 18 April 2012

Mr Sheaks has clearly been painting and teaching for a long time. He explains the techniques of acrylic painting in clear language and covers a lot of ground. It's certainly worth having this book, both as an initial introduction to the medium and, until you get much more experienced, as a reference. If I have any reservation it's that there's a certain lack of sparkle in the writing, but the essentials are there.

The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook (Essential Cookbook)
The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook (Essential Cookbook)
by Wendy Stephens
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding cook-book, 18 April 2012

There are a lot of truly dreadful cookbooks around, offering lots of extravagant colour photographs and recipes that are either uncookable or inedible. It must be very hard for someone who has no cooking experience to know where to start. Happily, there are exceptions, and this is definitely one of them. The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook is something of a masterpiece. You will find a very wide range of cooking styles represented, while a lot of the recipes are quite approachable for the novice. I'd even go so far as to say that every cook should have a copy, even those who think of themselves as carnivores.

Although this case doesn't have a belt-clip, it more than makes up for this with its high quality and low price. I'm not surprised the walls of my local Vodafone shop are no longer lined with overpriced tat.

Excellent cast, fine writing and top-drawer direction. A great piece of work. A splash of gallows humour finishes it off nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky and enjoyable, 1 Aug. 2010
The Robots are based not far from where I live, and I've seen them live a few times. They're an excellent live act - really engaging - and the energy they have live seems to have survived the recording process. Definitely get the album, but even more definitely try and get to see them live. Apprarently they're playing some dates in London soonish (summer / autumn '10).
