2.0 out of 5 stars A brief insightful read but not much "bang for your buck", 18 Jan. 2015

This review is from: Thoughts on Design (Paperback)
As a designer myself I think this book is worth the read and the thoughts of Paul Rand, really do ring true today. He is spot on in what true graphic design is and should be, that it should be appreciated for what it is, a skill, an art form, something far more than "my cousins knows Word, so they're designing my logo for £20" or "can you just knock me up a quick poster, all cheap like?".

Why only 2 stars? you ask....well they aren't for Pauls work or writing, he's a 5, they're for this particular publishers version of this book and the "bang for your buck" you get, or rather lack of it.

1. Out of the 95 pages, only 20 or so are reading - the original published version had 164 pages (see Paul Rand website), which I understand won't all be readable as a good majority are images of his work, which is great to see but I'm left wondering why this is so short? (I'd completed it in about an hour).

2. The original (again see Paul Rand website), " 94 halftone illustrations and 8 color plates.", this version has no colour versions of his work at all!. If they could manage it back in 1947 it makes you wonder why they didn't choose to use some in this version?.

So is it worth a read?, yes definitely, is it worth £12 though?, I'll have to say no. I would suggest getting the cheaper Kindle version, try a local library or if this version was half the price it would be better. It would be nice to read the original but to buy they seem very expensive and few and far between.

I would also note that Pauls writing seems sexists as it all refers to the designer as "he", I gather that was the way in 1947 but thank goodness times have changed......don't let that put you off though.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK but far from worth £13, 29 Nov. 2013

Just took delivery, intended for my niece at Christmas. Admittedly I thought this was porcelain but it's plastic which although Im slightly disappointed, I guess it'll prevent the arms from breaking off. Glad I didn't pay full price (Black Friday deal) as it seems a bit steep for what it is. "Carefully hand painted" it says. Well on mine there's clear overpaint on her waist and on the birdbath thing at the front.
Hopefully though it'll inspire her to save her pennies.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great remaster....but...., 10 Oct. 2012

This review is from: Blueprint (Audio CD)
I got this remastered version of what is a great album in the hope it delivered something new, namely the full versions of Stompin Ground and Treat Her Right. Unfortunately they still both fade out as Rory clearly keeps on playing. I'm all for remastered works but I cant help felling short changed when all they state are "improved sound quality". If remastered from the originals then why not deliver the whole ear storming performance of Rory and Co.?, stop editing them down.

By the way, if it's a case of them not fitting on the CD, what's the excuse for cutting down the downloadable MP3 versions?

Still happy to chuck money Rorys way....the guy is a legend that unfortunately I never got to see.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but just a shame it's not all there., 15 Jan. 2011
This review is from: In Session (Audio CD)
The Bad...
This DVD and the CD have been victims of bad editing as songs are clearly missing. The previous release of In Session had Ask Me No Questions on it and Overall Junction (both missing from this version) but it lacked I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town, which this version has. Begs the question why?, DVD space?, copyright infringements?
The DVD song order has clearly been hacked around. Around 57mins in Albert tells Stevie about him being a good guitarist and having soul right before the lead into Pride and Joy and yet he also says the same thing at 39.30 mins which then ends with an abrupt Act 2 cut scene.....again why?

The Good...
Throughout you can tell Stevie is in awe of his idol Albert. The banter is great with the odd awkward moments from Stevie either not hearing what Albert said or laughing falsely. No way a bad thing, great to watch between the two of them so Im glad they didn't cut out the banter (shame this did the songs though).
As for the playing, simply genius from all there, including the other band members who are hidden in shadow (Gus Thornton is one cool bass player). Stevie doesn't fail to show his passion for playing in his face with every song and Albert sure makes "Lucy" sing even though it looks like his fingers are far to big for the fretboard (I believe he strung his guitar upside down aswell, top E string being at the top rather than bottom).

In summary definately worth buying for what's on it, just an utter shame it's been badly produced and missing some great songs meaning you have to buy all both releases to get them.

2 great guitar legends gone, but not forgotten.

Great addition to a night in with your friends playing Poker. Easily folds out and simply plonks on a tabletop (round one recommended), crack open the drinks and fetch out the nibbles...and away you go!
Me and my friends started a game of Texas Hold Em at 7.30pm......the final 2 were still playing at 3.30am!!!
Makes for a great social night, so dig out your cards and put on your best Poker face!

4.0 out of 5 stars Super!...Smashing!...Great!....ish!, 5 Dec. 2005
This review is from: Upstarts - Bullseye DVD (Toy)
You can't beat a bit of Bully!....well.....this is a good attempt at it anyway. It's got all the rounds of the TV show...where in teams of two you battle for the Bully's Star Prize....or you can play normal 301 darts.
Now the down's got the games...but sadly not Jim Bowen or Tony Green. Instead there's some guy who trys to sound like Jim doing the voiceovers...which is OK, but it's just not Jim!
You throw the darts by pressing the Enter button on your DVD remote, first when a blue wedge shape (which to me seems too thick) that spins around the board reaches your required number section on the board, then again when the circle moves from the outer board to the bullseye....then the dart is thrown.
This makes it more of a game of luck rather than much of skill as its down to the timing of the press. There is a DVD configuration option in the menu but I found that if I used the recommend setting, the darts didnt go where I wanted them to, so I chose my own setting and it seemed better.
The prizes are all cartoon style drawings which is a shame...half the fun of the show was seeing such 'cool' prizes up for grabs like the digital radio cassette player...oooooooo!
In the end Id say it's good for a bit of family fun....and should bring back some memories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great set to have but..., 1 Sept. 2005
This review is from: SRV (Audio CD)
.....for a box set, I'd expected more from the DVD. It seems all too short with bits and songs chopped out. CD wise it's a good selection of his songs, and the inlay card gives a good account of his career, from his early start with the guitar as a young boy, to his sad, and tragic death.
Worth buying if you're a SRV fan, but buy all his other albums aswell!
