This is Dan Brown by the numbers, some Art history a bit of a chase and of course a nutty professor, well actually more than one nutty professor. It would be nice if Dan Brown went back to writing a book rather than Hollwoods next 3D summer epic.

Ry Cooder in my world is as near to beyond critiscism as an artist can get.His last outing Chavez Ravine as the work of an artist was edgy and brilliant, but not particulary musical, and would put off any newcomers to his work.

This however is his old self teamed up with his old backing band and more importantly (in my opinion) Flaco Jimenez is old friend and terrific accordionist, it reminds of "Chicken Skin Music" and other Hank Williams inspired works.

It's like an old friend calling again after many years, thanks Ry and for god's sake do a British tour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice starter, now what about the main course?, 13 Mar 2006

The are moments in this album when if you close your eyes this could almost be extra tracks from the Wall!.This notion is broken howevever by the sweetness and lyrical quality of tracks such as "smile".This album is way better than his last solo outing "about face", its the creation of a musician of maturity and confidence and at times is very beautiful. However as much as I enjoyed the experience its not what us ageing Floyd fans want!.We were given hope last year at the G8 concert when Watters once again stood where he belonged. How we long for one more dash of cynicism before we die, one more chance to dine at the top table of the Greatest band of the 20th century "Pink Floyd".

If you are looking for a nice safe pop album, then avoid this like the plague.Cooders style has never been mainstream, and his new album an eclectic hybrid mix of different styles held together by a narative about an area of LA bulldozed in the name of progress.Cooders style has never been safe, but it has always been authentic, in a world where any idiot with a hit album is hailed as a "genius" he just might be the real deal. His new album is both angry and nostalgic, it is a difficult listen but worthwhile, it is a work by an artist that cares about his craft, it is totally unique.
