2.0 out of 5 stars Bland and confused, 4 April 2014
This review is from: Noah [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Cinematic experience is about thrilling and exciting viewers, but not over focusing on that angle. At the same time, there has to be depth in storyline and characters. The balance has to be right. Noah fails to achieve the right balance. Noah failed to keep me enthralled for long periods. I was literally about 2 and half hours in a cinema hall watching a bland and confused piece of film making. It is meant to be a bibloical interpretation of a story losely based on Noah's arc. It starts with talking rocks and loses the plot completely. There are plenty of bland moments throughout the film. Hardly any action and excitement at all. I do not mean glory violence scenes and scary creatures for the sake of it. It needed to be surreal and be creative in its story-telling. There are no special effects, apart from the talking rocks and high seas. I appreciate with a biblical piece of making film there is a distinctive style of storytelling, but how it is delivered needs to be more interesting and appealing to viewers. The attention span presents a major issue in the film. I struggled to connect with the story and characters. I found the characters very bitter, particularly Noah who came across as moody and unlikeable. I am not sure how accurate the film reflects the main character, as unfolded in the original story. My knowledge of the subject area is very limited. I am assuming the character is a hero and should have been portrayed in a better light. The film lacks clarity and direction. It needed to be more coherent. I agree with the negative reviews on this ocasion. It needed the oomph factor. I would not even consider purchasing it on blue ray. 2 stars is a fair reflection.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is what I call a quality super hero film, 30 Mar 2014
Marvel is renowned for creating super-heroes enjoyed by millions. Marvel delivers a quality super hero film to enjoy. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a much welcomed instalment to the big screen. It ticks the boxes of what I expect of a super-hero film. Chris Evan's forte is playing the all- round American good guy. Captain America embarks on a journey in the future of modern America.

The super-hero joins the Shield organization. There is a dark secret affecting the foundation and integrity of the organisation as Captain America is about to find out. The past haunts the super hero, as he is under attack from a mysterious assassin the Winter Soldier. The film draw parallels between past and the future. There is a history between the characters. Who created the Winter Soldier? Who can you trust? Captain America discovers a new enemy, who has been hidden under the radar for a long time. Captain America and his allies Black Widow and Hawk battle to save the world from the forces of evil.

Captain America: Winter Soldier picks up from the first instalment. The new film is action packed, explosive and dark. At the same time, the storyline is well developed. It is nail biting and keeps you enthralled until the end. There is no moment of blandness in the film. The character of Captain America is much more developed. He comes across as likeable, but takes no nonsense from anyone. There are few wisecracks throughout the film. The dialogues are sophisticated, not annoyingly cheesy. Sophistication and depth makes the film stand out really well. There are new characters introduced to the film.

The writers have done a very good job in bringing the latest instalment to the big screen. It is an excellent cinematic experience. I am considering of buying the film once released on Blue ray. I would rate it highly as one of the best modern super hero films. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. If you are looking for quality super hero films, I would definitely recommend Captain America: Winter Soldier. I look forward to the release of future marvel hero film based on Captain America and Avengers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gritty and dark piece of British prison drama, 29 Mar 2014
Starred up shows British film making of the highest quality. It is a dark, gritty, powerful and compelling piece of film making. It tells the story of a young and volatile offender Eric Love. He has been transferred to an adult prison, notorious for prisoning dangerous criminals. He acquaints with his father, who is serving a long term period in prison. Can a bonding be developed despite an unhappy history between the characters? There are testing and emotional scenes between the characters. Eric's character is engaging, as we try to understand the struggles and hardships the character experienced in life. The character volatile behaviour can be uncontrollable, as he struggles to interact with other inmates and viscously attacks. Can he learn to control his anger? Can he survive in the prison? Starred is well directed. It is atmospheric, as it recreates the life in a prison of dealing with dangerous prisoners. It is well directed and very well acted from the cast. The characters and very well written storyline deserve strong praise. The film contains plenty of swearing and violence scenes, thus prompting an 18 certificate. It shows film making of a high professional level. If you are into gritty dramas, then I would recommend Starred Up. The film straight away grabbed my attention, the moment it started.

Edition: Hardcover
Price: 12.91

5.0 out of 5 stars Baldacci is a world class thriller writer, as latest novel proves, 9 Mar 2014
Baldacci is a well established thriller writer. He is one of the best in the field. King and Maxwell proves the point. The characters are former secret agents, turned private investigators. The partnership works well between the two leading characters. The characters are well developed. The characterisation ticks the box for me. The plot is gripping, enthralling and compelling. The plot concerns a young lad Tyler Wingo. The army pass on the devastating news of his father death. There is a twist, as he receives an email after his death. Information becomes conflicting later on. There are suspicions raised. Is his father alive still? The integrity of the miltary is questioned. There appears to be something sinister and strang occuring. The two private investigators agree to take on the case. What will be exposed? What dangers lay ahead? The plot is filled with plenty of thrills and excitement. The pace flows at a rapid pace. Plot and relenting pace are true hallmarks of a worldclass thriller reader. If you are like reading top quality thrillers, I would recommend King and Maxwell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Edge of the seat stuff, 9 Mar 2014
Liam Nesson stars as a troubled marshal federal agent Bill Marks. He is boarding a terrifying flight from New York to London. He receives nasty text messages. The messages alert passangers will be killed every twenty minuites unless substantial amount of money received. Everybody is a culprit on the plane. What are the motives behind these attacks? How does Bill save the day as there are reports about his past being broadcasted on tv? The film is filled with plenty edge of the seat moments. The film keeps you enthralled until the end. The pace is so fast. Bill's character is intriguing, as he is not mentally stable. The film is reminiscent of 90s hijacking films Passanger 57 and Air Force One. The film is updated with the 21st technology. It is a well crafted thriller film, filled with plenty of twists and turns. I enjoyed the film. If you are into high octance thrillers, I would recommend Non Stop.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tedious and fails to grab my attention, 28 Feb 2014
I am not doubting Mo Hayder's skills as a fine crime writer. The novels are authentically written. On this ocasion, I cannot give positive comments. To be honest, I struggled to be absorbed to the latest novel, following a rather sluggish and uncomfortably slow start. The middle parts start to pick up momentum, but dries down later. It is incredibly bland in many parts. The book is overshadowed by events in a mental facility regarding sinister occurrences. The key characters are neglected. I did not really engage to the chracters featured. I did not find the story gripping enough and straight away grab my attention. I find the ideas silly and childish. The ending seems rushed, as the author runs out of steam to maintain interest. I am utterly confused by the supernatural events featured throughout the novel. It heads no direction at all.The novel is so tedious and filled with waffle. The delivery let the novel down for me. It is not me at all. I have read with much better and faster paced crime fiction than this. Fast pace, engaging characters and a nail biting conclusions are key attributes of what makes a good crime read for me.Unfortunately, the novel did not tick any of the boxes the way I expected it, thus prompting a two star rating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and fun, but nothing else, 9 Feb 2014
Personally, I think White House Down is an entertaining and fun film to watch. Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down are equally matched in terms of ratings. These films fall in the similar category. The theme revolves around an attack on the white house by a terrorist organisation. The plot is about an agent and divorced father Cale, (Channing Tatum) who is eager to prove a point. He found himself embroiled in a dangerous situation when taking her rather annoying daughter for a tour of the White House. He protects the president (Jamie Fox) from a group of terrorists. The chemistry between the president and agent is filled with humour and few rows. The plot is predictable, as there are no surprises who the hero will be. The film is filled with too many clichés, which I have seen before. The media attention and American patriotism is starting to bore me. I do not want see another White House film purely focusing about one man and one perspective. We need something different, where there is depth and realism. It is too cheesy. I think Chantum Tanning is a good action hero, but his acting is so wooden. He needs to improve on the acting skills. Jamie Fox is an accomplished actor. I think he is better off sticking to serious roles rather than scoop to absurdity. Neverless, it is fun and entertaining, but nothing strongly to praise for. Three stars is a fair reflection. Something different should be on the horizon based around the White House. It is starting get too shalllow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and gritty piece of film-making, 7 Feb 2014
This review is from: Prisoners [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Prisoners is very well directed and acted. Hugh Jackman stars as a grieving father and Jake Gyllenhaal as an unorthodox cop. These actors add credibility and make the characters believable in context of the plot. I can actually engage with the characters. The plot is about the abduction of two young girls and the search to find them safely.

The day starts brightly, as Keller and family are celebrating thanksgiving with close neighbours, but things later take a nasty turn as the two girls all of sudden go missing. The police officer in charge of the investigation arrests a possible suspect. He is found outside the house. The suspect is released, as there is lack of evidence against him. Keller is not so convinced, as he believed the suspect is hiding information about the whereabouts of the girls and uses heavy handed approaches in extracting information. He takes the law into own hands. Could the suspect hold the key in locating the missing girls? New evidence comes to light that may solve the case, as the Detective Loki is about to find out. Is it another dead end? The plot is well developed an. We learn a great deal about the two characters. It questions how police deals with missing persons cases. Is it right to take law into own hands and bare the consequences of such actions as Keller's character illustrates?

Prisoner is a dark and gritty piece of film-making. It is very well thought out thriller, that keeps you in the suspense for long periods. It tackles the complexity of human minds. There are plenty of disturbing and hollowing scenes throughout the film. It is unusally long for a thriller film. I am stating a point, not regarding it as a flaw. These type of films are normally fasted pace. The film focuses on particular areas for long periods to provide a picture of key events, but not entirely complete. To me, it works well. I would definitely recommend Prisoners if you are looking for a a good thriller film.
