4.0 out of 5 stars typically sondheim, 12 May 2004
that means good! It is grand, amazing and fantastic, but if you are anything like me, most sondheim needs to be listened to or watched a few times to really appreciate. Sunday in the Park with George is visually amazing. It has some beautiful songs (Finishing the Hat springs to mind) and Mandy Patinkin is simply superb. This is a first rate, top notch, high class production that is a gerat addition to anyones musicals collection

3.0 out of 5 stars Good in parts, 12 May 2004
This review is from: Victor/Victoria [DVD] (DVD)
i am totally underwhemled by Julie Andrews in this one. Not impressed by the singing or acting. Given the role (a women trying to succeed as man .. in short) there could have been a lot more energy behind it. Overall as well, the songs are nothing to write home about - although some are performed very well.
Not that I didn't enjoy it! the sets are amazing, the costumes greatand some of the actors are great. But for me, the music/songs is an intergral part of a musical, and to go away from it not remembering a single line of a single song, or any of the tune is a disappointed. BUT ... It was funny, it was sweet, and I will be watching it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic!, 12 May 2004
This is a large scale production! as with most sondheim, a small cast, but all of them are just so good! Bernadette Peters is great in what ever she does, Little Red Riding Hood is superb, Robert Westernberg (the Prince, and the Wolf) is fantastic ... they all are. It has a host of songs that anyone can sing and is just great. Marvel at the amazing set, and just watch a 5-star performance

3.0 out of 5 stars A good musical, and ok movie, 12 May 2004
This review is from: Oliver! [DVD] [1968] (DVD)
Oliver is one of those musicals that has grown on me over the years. It is definitely dark (well, what do you expect from Dickens), but it has some fantastic songs and a strong story line.
Some of the characters just irritate me on this - the singing voice of Oliver for example. Like I said, the more I see it the more I enjoy it, but there is just soemthing ... and although I said it was a dark story above, I feel that this version really highlights those dark aspects, which I don't like. This is not a fundamental flaw in the film, just personal preference.
Overall though, it is a good movie, and definitely worth a look if you have never seen it before, a revisit if you have

5.0 out of 5 stars great for people not into 'traditional' muscials, 12 May 2004
This review is from: Grease [DVD] [1978] (DVD)
Face it, Grease is just cool! The songs are perfect karaoke (who hasn't sung 'summer nights''??) and just a lot of fun. Since it is set in the 50's it doesn't age.
A fantastic feel good movie
