4.0 out of 5 stars Elton Rocks The Westies!, 8 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Rock of the Westies (Audio CD)
Elton's first album since the departure of Dee Murray & Nigel Olsen sees him reunited with some of the players from his earliest albums. He also goes in a more rockier direction with 'Street Kids' my personal highlight with it's thumping piano runs. While not in the same street as his previous six or seven albums,Rock of the Westies is well worth a listen & along with Blue Moves rate among the better efforts of the next phase in Elton's stellar career.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stellar band undergirds this eclectic performance., 20 Oct 2010
I stumbled upon this concert by accident while watching a selection of Kate Bush clips and upon further investigation discovered it was still available on VHS. My interest is mainly in Kate Bush's memorable performance of 'The Wedding List',which originally appeared on her 1980 'Never for Ever' album, but there are also handy performances by Jethro Tull,Pete Townsend,Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) and Madness. The band is a veritable who's who featuring Mick Karn (Japan),Midge Ure (Ultravox) and Phil Collins among others.

Kate's performance is memorable for several reasons. Only Kate could make a song about murder/suicide sound so deliciously sexy, she also has a massive wardrobe malfunction but manages to keep her composure and ride out the song to it's ultimate climax, all with a wry smile on her face. She is more than capably backed by the aforementioned Mick Karn,Midge Ure,Pete Townsend,Gary Brooker and Phil Collins (resplendent in a hideous Hawaiian shirt and throwing off drum fills with ridiculous ease) along with Peter Hope Evans on mouth harp.

Kate fans will want this in their collection as it's a rare outing with musicians of the highest calibre, which isn't to suggest that her own KT Band has ever been found wanting, but seeing her share the stage with such luminaries is an absoulute treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Thick Of It:Specials are special!, 16 Sep 2009
This DVD package contains both post-Chris Langham 'Specials' and both episodes are special in that some of the lesser lights of The Thick Of It cast now take centre stage.

The first disc contains 'The Rise Of The Nutters' in which the Opposition are the focus along with some Government back room staff and ministerial wannabes. If you can cope with the strong language there are some genuine laugh out loud moments here and even without Chris Langham, who played the inept Hugh Abbott in Seasons 1 and 2,this first 'special' has much to commend it.

The second disc features 'Spinners and Losers' which finds Malcolm Tucker, played with ferocious intensity by Peter Capaldi,on the back foot fighting for his political life. While not having the same cleverness as 'The Rise Of The Nutters',this second 'special' does benefit from repeated viewings.

On the whole these DVDs will compliment your collection, particularly if you enjoyed Seasons One and Two as they don't suffer too much from Chris Langham's absence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value In Contemporary Hymnals, 27 Jun 2009
The New Standard Version 'Words' Edition is low in price but high in quality. An excellent collection of old standards and favourites, newer hymns and some uniquely English hymns makes this a must have for churches not just in the U.K but here in Australia as well.Especially if your church is using Cantoris Records' Collection of 200 Hymns on CD.This has most,if not all,of the hymns on this collection and for Australian churches will compliment those using the Australian Hymn Book. This hymnal is therefore highly recommended.
