Till The Clouds Roll By [1946] [DVD]
Till The Clouds Roll By [1946] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Judy Garland
Offered by WorldCinema
Price: £9.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A good musical because of the songs, 5 Jan. 2014

This is one of the better composer biopics despite flirting with the truth. A host of stars sing and dance to some of Jerome Kerns most popular tunes which makes for pleasant viewing. The extended use of scenes from Showboat at the beginning of the film sets the mood and the tunes keep on coming until the end

3.0 out of 5 stars limited appeal, 5 Jan. 2014

The book is good to look at, very well presented, but it is written for professional caterers and confectioners and this fact is not made clear on the front of the book. For domestic purposes it assumes too much prior knowledge and the ingredient quantities are much too high for the average amateur cakemaker

4.0 out of 5 stars A treat for Minelli and Fosse fans, 26 Jun. 2013

A very energetic performance from Liza Minnelli and some great dance routines in typical Fosse style. I found it too short of content and the show was over just as you are warming to it. Another half hour - another star.

Use your head in tennis
Use your head in tennis
by Bob Harman
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars a club players best friend, 26 Mar. 2010
Although an old book and a bit out of date due to the new rackets and recently improvised strokes, this is the only book I have read which talks about tennis as a game and not a career. 'Enjoy the game' is the theme and it is an easy read with lots of sensible tips and tactics. It caters for the majority of people who play tennis and will help them improve their game without pain.

4.0 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like they used to, 27 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Chicago [DVD] (DVD)
I'm old fashioned and like my musicals to be straightforward. The new trend, beginning with Moulin Rouge, is to add gimmicks and film tricks which, to my mind, do not improve the comprehensibilty or the enjoyment. This is a good film, full of tuneful jazzy music, excellent dancing (choreographed by Bob Fosse), some nice humour and some good acting but partially spoiled by the split camera work during some of the musical numbers. Very clever I must admit but too distracting when I am enjoying the music and dancing for it's own sake. Fosse himself used this technique in Cabaret but in much more moderation. Very enjoyable film but it ain't 'Singin in the Rain'

3.0 out of 5 stars good show, wrong concept, 23 Nov. 2008

Apart from the stars which Darcey Bussell and Katherine Jenkins claim inspired them should be added the name of Mickey Rooney who would usually exclaim in his early films "Let's put on a show". About as much thought went into the thinking behind Viva La Diva because the concept meant that these two likeable, popular and talented ladies, who were breaking new ground, were saddled with emulating top performances by stars outside their comfort zone. Darcey Bussell came out best because her dancing could match Cyd Charise, Audrey Hepburn and Moira Shearer but she was uncomfortable as Jane Russell in 'Diamonds' and I doubt if she would have passed an audition with Bob Fosse. Katherine Jenkins was way out of her depth apart from the operatic numbers. She is a very good looking lady with a great soprano voice but she lacks sexuality, emotion, drama and a smooth silky delivery. Getting her to try to sing the songs of Doris Day, Edith Piaff, Barbra Streisand, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland is beyond her current talent. She cannot act and hasn't the experience of musical theatre and film attributed to all those stars. She would have been more comfortable emulating Jeanette McDonald, Deanna Durbin and Kathryn Grayson.
The DVD is entertaining. The dancers and the orchestra are very good and the sets imaginative. It can be enjoyed in it's own right but not as a tribute to the named stars

3.0 out of 5 stars a place in the sun, 8 Jan. 2004
This is not a criticism of the book itself but of the synopsis supplied which mentions 20 destinations but does not specify the countries. I ordered this book because we are interested in moving to Florida which has been featured on the channel 4 series. this book does not cover that area and is, therefore, of no use to us personally. I would recommend that the synopsis identifies the countries covered so as to avoid other purchasers making this mistake
