5.0 out of 5 stars Gift Set Review, 28 Nov. 2012
Ok, so it's pretty certain that real fans of the series will be wanting the Gift Set set over the classic DVD and Blu Ray releases. I recieved mine last night and I am more than impressed with the overall quality of what you get in the package!

PRESENTATION- the gift set is packaged in a padded card box which is great- heavy, substantial, and makes you feel like you've bought into a real quality product. The box is decorated much like HBOs Inside GOT book, with the Stark, Baratheon, Lannister and Targaryen sigils across the front. The items inside are easily taken out by a ribbon pull system which you find in most gift boxsets.

SERIES 1 BLU RAY- just as expected, the blu ray quality doesn't dissapoint. In my opinion, the quality exceeds that of the HD on Sky Atlantic, Sky 1 or HBO, whichever channel you watch the series on. Again the packaging is superb, the CDs are housed in a carboard backed case and then the sleeve displaying the cover and features slides over the top.

EXTRA CONTENT- I've not had chance to watch much of this, apart from the episode commentaries. Benioff & Weiss, George RR Martin, Sean Bean, Maisie Williams ect. (all of the people you'd want to hear from) appear in the commentary, and give us a real insight into what goes into production, and the experiences they all had on set. It's great to watch with commentary if, like me, you already know the episodes inside out and want something new from your viewing experience. I can't wait to watch the other content such as 'inside the Night's Watch' and 'Anatomy of an episode', which I think will be valuable extras for die hard fans.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 1- since series 2 isn't released on DVD and Blu Ray until March, this was a superb extra to have in the package to award the fans who have shelled out the extra bit of cash for this package. Again Blu Ray quality is stunning and brings out the budget and improved production of Series 2, and will make us very excited for the full release in a few months time.

DRAGON EGG- again, the ceramic dragon egg was just a great little extra to include in the package to make the product that little bit cooler. Currently retailing on the HBO site for £24.99 on its own, it was amazing to have it included for the price! The quality is a lot better than I expected, very true to the props used on the series, and suprisingly heavy. Can be used as an ornament, paperweight, whatever you want, or you can just keep in in the box, which is the classiest option. It looks great lying next to the box set in the black casing. Underneath the egg is levelled in gold metal with the Game of Thrones logo, which again is just a nice touch.

Overall this is simply a superb product which any fan of the series should aim to purchase over the standard sets, because of the stunning extra content. At only a few pounds more it was definitely worth the wait, 10/10!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure class, 12 Nov. 2012
Just looking at the cover of this book, you'll realise that your money has been truly well spent. The casing is a type of soft leathery plastic which feels great, and the printing shows all house sigils, much like the opening credits of the show. It's a big, heavy, classy book that will look great on anyone's shelf.

This book is currently £14 on amazon which is crazy, I bought mine for £25 and thought the value was oustanding.

The first thing that will strike you is the photography- no quality has been spared, each page is beautifully laid out with official photographs of HBOs sets, production and of course episode stills. There are comments from the season actors and from Beioff and Weiss who add useful insights now and again.

The book is set into sections- there are pages for each region in Westeros (Winterfell, King's Landing, Essos ect.) and within these sections there are full character profiles along with detailed set layouts which show us just how much time, money and effort goes into creating Game of Thrones. The foreward by George RR Martin which opens the book is also fantastic.

Overall, any fan of the books or the show will be delighted with this book, it's a must-have companion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best foreign folk band to hit the UK in recent years, 29 Aug. 2012
This review is from: My Head is an Animal (Audio CD)
This is a superb debut album from Of Monsters and Men. At first when you read their bio you wonder if there's anything new they could possibly have to offer- a group of European folk rockers who became known by winning Iceland's equivalent to the X Factor are surely nothing special. How wrong anyone is to think this! After watching their energetic set at Leeds this year I listened to the rest of the album (having only heard little talks and dirty paws). It did not disappoint- 5/5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arguably Newton's best yet, 19 July 2012
This review is from: Write It On Your Skin (Audio CD)
I'll do a simple review of each song on the album and get right into it.

Pulling Teeth- the opening song of the album and no doubt one of the best. Anyone who's seen Newton live over the last few months enters the album having heard some of the material, so this song greeted me like an old friend. His simply astounding ability to write flawless, catchy acoustic guitar is ever present here, along with a bouncy chorus to draw us in. A great opener.

Soon- here we see, in my opinion, a song that reminds us of Newton's old work, bringing back his percussive style in songs such as 'All I Got' off Hand built By Robots. I really enjoy this one- and it is my favourite song lyrically on the album. Guitar players will love this one, and the presence of simple piano again highlights Newton's ability to write incredible songs.

Brick by Brick- this is a masterpiece of a tune, and it has been brought to life in full production. I only heard the stripped acoustic performance of this in May, so it's great to hear it in all its glory. This is my favourite chorus of the whole album, as Newt brings in a secondary guitar laden with a post 50s type funk effect to accompany his acoustic style. I love this one. It may well be my favourite.

Clouds- I think this'll be the first single on the album. Again Newton shows off his percussive skills and it's hard to believe that the intro really is just one guitar. The lyrics again are superb here, and there's elements of experimentation , new instruments and effects have been brought into the chorus to make this another wonderful tune. This I think will become a live favourite during this festival summer!

Pick Up Your Broken Heart- this was one of my favorites live, and the studio version does not disappoint. This is traditional Newton and reminds me a lot of 'Uncomfortably Slow' or 'So Much' off Album no. 2. There's obviously a lot going on in Newton's head while he writes, there's some lyrical stuff hear that I can't even begin to understand!

Long Shot- this is a much simpler song musically, but in no means less interesting. While Newton is obviously a massively talented guitar player, his vocal talent is shown here just as much. This sounds like a song most guitar players will begin to learn themselves first. It's perfect for low-key sing-a-longs, campfires, and festivals. I can't wait to hear this one again at V fest.

Write it On Your Skin- here we have it, the title track. When this was released on the EP a few months ago I was mind-blown, I wasn't sure whether Newton was going to go back to hand built, or continue the up-tempo sound of rebuilt, but instead its something completely different! This will be a lot of people's favourite. The lyrics are simple and feel good, the music is again excellent, and the chorus is just superb, with a classic vibe that's unmistakably Newton. No one writes tunes like this, no one but him. The bridge and chorus will never, ever get old.

In the Morning- I think the album needs this tune to cool down after the title track. It's a lovely song and reminds me a lot of 'I took it out on you'. But it's definitely different. Most artists tend to lag behind at this point in an album, but not here. This is a tune you could fall asleep to, or dance to! Newton's versatility in my opinion is the key to his success!

Against the Grain- this is my favourite song on the album. Without a doubt. Because it's just classic Newton! There's just nothing I dislike about this tune, the guy's vocals are just superb, and how he can progress through about 100 chords while singing the way he does is amazing. Lyrics are again heart-felt! It's one we shouldn't try to understand, just enjoy.

Sugar in the Snow- I hear an element of 'blues brothers' in here, as Newton picks up the tempo again to finish the album. This is one for parties after most people have left, it's a great feel-good tune. The end of the album is just as captivating as the beginning.

The album ends with a series of acoustic tunes that sound completely different stripped down. They give people a taste of what's to come in Newton's upcoming live performances which I believe will blow the world away!

This is a work of art Newton, please don't make it your last!

3 days after receiving the Arc S I feel I now know it well enough to write a short review.
Any iPhone users who have switched to this smartphone will agree that it is far far superior. Faster processor, brighter & sharper screen and all the apps you can get on the iPhone's app store, but a lot more are free through the Android Market.

Unlike some others I actually like the Timescape feature a lot, as it brings all of your SMS messages, facebook messages and status' together on your home screen so you don't have to take multiple steps to contact people. Great feature.

The camera is another fantastic strong point of this phone, in my opinion the photos it takes outside look much crisper than 8MP! Low light shots are also handled well but colourful pictures are what really stand out on the Bravia display.

The design of the phone feels superb in the hand, weighing a fair bit lighter than the iPhones but with a bigger screen and better features inside. Sony have really stood out from the crowd in this department.

So overall an absolute monster of a phone, hope to stick with this for a few years and don't think it'll ever feel outdated. No negatives at all yet!

The Kindle is a masterpiece. On a 5-day trip to Italy I had boxed off The Fellowship of the Ring with great pleasure, thanks to the Kindle's lightweight portability, smooth features and fantastic display- books can be read in bright sunlight because of the E ink screen which is not any type of LCD glass material but more of a matte display, perfect for reading.. Quality!
Many more books will be bought!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product, crazy lack of sizing info!, 27 Mar. 2012
This review is being written less than a week before my Thai fight on Sunday, so I may update this review as and when I have properly competed in these shin guards, so probably some time next week.

First of all, I bought these in the red colour, only because my shorts are red. They do look great, and don't look like the colour will be fading anytime soon. The strap below the knee is a fantastic touch and sets this pair of shin guards apart from some other nylon ones I have purchased for interclubs, adding that extra bit of solid comfort to prevent these flying round your legs when you block a decent kick.

In terms of size, these should fit anyone who would usually buy a M/L size. These guards wing a fair bit around the edges when you first open the packet, but a night or two folded over underneath a heavy box will sort this out, and turn them slimmer around the shin, providing much more comfort and style (if that's your thing!). I am 6ft and fight at 63kg, so obviously I am on the slim side, but these fit just fine, and would fit anyone a bit shorter with thicker legs OK too.

Overall 4/5 stars, only because of the loose lining between the foot and shin protectors, but this can be sorted with a tight anklet over the top. These are great shin guards and it is definitely worth spending the extra £10 or so in terms of sock-type nylon guards. For heavy sparring go leather!

Right, I'm an idiot. Received these speakers last night, on goes a bit of Prodigy on full speaker + full system volume. The right speaker blew out immediately and now creates a devastatingly annoying hiss even at the lower volumes. These speakers ARE NOT made for serious use ie filling a room with techno- beware!

However, if you use these for normal music listening use or just usual PC use you'll be fine, these are great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful work, 28 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Where The Oceans End (Audio CD)
A 5 star album must be perfect, that's the way I see it. This isn't, but its very very close. It is astounding that this album hasn't had a single review- Cocoon are one of the greatest and most talented foreign bands to grace our shores in folk history. This album sums them up entirely- finely tuned harmonies, soft guitars and dreamy lyrics. Its a masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the greatest game I've ever played, 27 Oct. 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Ok, so it's Red Dead Redemption- everyone's heard of it and it's classed as one of the games of the last 5 years that must be played. There are reviews out there that say this is not for everyone, but I challenge that, and believe that it really is.

This game is free roaming at its best, story mode missions at there best and characterisation at its ABSOLUTE best. Without spoiling the phenomenal plot, you play through the main story mission until completion and then any stranger missions/ outfit unlocks/ area missions or general roaming are free for you to complete in your own time, when, where and how you want to.

Interracting with characters in your spare time will unlock new weapons, cash or achievements which can be used throughout your travels. Money will buy you food, clothes, guns, maps and horses which can enhance your performance as a western icon.

Nothing in Red Dead Redemption is there just for looks. Everything from a passer- by in the field to the animals running around as you ride can be used to your advantage, or just to have a little fun. I can't stress enough that this game is truly exeptional, and should go down as the one of the best console creations in history. It's historically acurate, fast moving, stunning to look at and the gameplay is without so many usual niggles that there are many out there, including me, who call it perfect.

And, on top of all its perfection, Rockstar have created a varied level of difficulty that isn't overly frustrating but still gives gamers enough to keep them interested. The campaign is a joy to play, with just the right amount of challenge to excite us for ten or so hours, but the real challenge is getting to the games 100% completion mark. The campaign itself gets the figure to about 55%, the stranger missions around 20%, and little things like mini-game and outfit completion will finish the job. But it's not an easy ride!

So, overall, as you can tell if you've been good enough to read this far, I LOVE this game. Many pleasant nights have been spent (not wasted) playing this glorious creation as best I can, and for under £20 its an ABSOLUTE STEAL! Buy this, now!
