2.0 out of 5 stars good voice, songs lack depth, 15 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Little Voice (Audio CD)
This singer undoubtably possesses a fine, rich singing voice, and she sings well, but for me there is a lack of emotional connection between singer and song. She sings the songs, but without the feeling that she really means it and lives it. Some quite good songs, some mediocre songs, some poor songs, and always that richness of voice, all leave lots of room for improvement.

Here is an artist who obviously writes and sings with originality, and she puts plenty of effort into it. Trouble is, it just aint that good. There are some quite good tunes, mostly in the first half of he album, but quite good is as good as it gets, and much of it is quite unimpressive. Still, she is doing her best, and her earthy voice and straightforward musical arrangements are not unpleasant, but leave scope for improvement.Maybe she gets better with time and age. Wasted in Jackson? She should try living in Saltcoats.

1.0 out of 5 stars reallly quite awful, 15 Sep 2012
This review is from: Be Not Nobody (Audio CD)
With a childlike voice and a hughly over-pretentious backing orchestra fit for a major pop diva, combined with mediocre song writing and piano playing, it is hard to find any redeeming features whatsoever in this over rated effort. The singing really is quite awful and childlike, lacking any depth of feeling or emotion. Grim. Back to the charity shop with this. Surely all her work can't be so poor, perhaps there is improvement later on, something with more personal touches to it perhaps, but I am put off forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars good mix of songs, 29 Jun 2012

Those that like light rock/alternative music (or whatever it is) with a spiritual/Christian ingredient may like this one. The band photo in the booklet looks like a bunch of thuggish gangsters, quite incapable of making such music as is found here! A varied bunch of songs, ranging from the lighthearted to a rather serious sounding monologue, and all just about good enough to keep the listeners' interest going for the duration.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent musicianship, 14 Jun 2012
This album seems to have 2 identical releases, showing either the front or back cover of the CD, and it is so good that it deserves all the reviews it can have. As a purely speculative charity shop purchase based on the usual well known 'kiss me',it took only one listen to understand that this album was about far more than just that. Somewhat alternative is how it came across on first listen, and it took a while and several listens to properly understand what it was all about. The music writing combines a real talent with depths of meanings that are honest, original, and highly unusual. This is not just music from the heart, it is music from the soul, the depths of being. Those who love filling their lives with trivia will never understand it.The music combines both emotional and spiritual depth, though it is never in-your-face religious music. Nevertheless, 'we have forgotten', how it used to be, the first song goes, and 'the waiting room' looks on this world as a temporal place.'The lines of my earth' is an indictment, perhaps, on everything we all do 'for the money we shall make'- and not just the music industry. The climax of the album is perhaps 'love', with its mystical-eschatological theme carried along by a superb musical composition. This album is probably relatively little known, and their other work even more so, and so is probably underrated, but in a world obsessed with trivia that is only to be expected. That it has no title, no name, is somehow appropriate. It simply speaks for itself, and the band photo is so very natural, completely unassuming, with no attempt to project an image. This album has everything- great music, great voice, depth, richness, and meaning. Buy it, take your time to get to know and understand it, and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars high energy songs, 14 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought as a purely speculative purchase partly based on other reviews, this album took a long time to grow on me. What you get here are a collection of catchy songs and rhythms sung with gusto, with of course some slower ones towards the end of the album. The slightly squeaky voice is by no means unpleasant, and the lyrics and themes are of a fairly mainstream nature.Vastly overrated? Perhaps, but in a sea of pop mediocrity this is just about good enough to not bob by unnoticed. Not music to relax to for sure, it is an album for an up-tempo mood.

5.0 out of 5 stars a strong work, 14 Jun 2012
This review is from: Daydreams (Audio CD)
This album just about deserves a 5 star award for its strength of songwriting and a voice that can capture and convey a range of emotions - sometimes purely speculative purchases from charity shops really can work! Although she mostly just sings about relationships, nevertheless the compositions are strong enough to make it all work.It is her vocal strength that brings energy and depth to this collection of songs, all the greater an achievement given the great difficulties this artist faced in making this album. Sadly,it was to be her last and only album, but it was certainly worth the effort.A competent album with lots of good, strong sounds.

2.0 out of 5 stars a disapointment, 14 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Year Of The Wolf (Audio CD)
This offering fails to earn even 3 stars, for the songs here often lapse into formulaic mediocrity, and can even make the sensitive ear cringe on occasion. She has run out of creativity here, a big disapointment after her previous work. The voice becomes a bit of a wail at times. There are some redeeming features, but they are few,and on this showing it is perhaps time for her to retire and try something else in life. Okay, so its not all bad, and some of the slower songs are worth a listen, though here there is evident a harshly cynical anti-spiritual lyric. The catchy choruses of many a song here are rather banal and predictable. Can the production be blamed? Really, it is her album, her colaboration. Her previous albums were good, but this one is probably heading for the charity shop.

3.0 out of 5 stars a strong but abrasive album, 14 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fires (Audio CD)
This album engaged me easily at first with its strongly delivered songs that convey plenty of honest feeling and emotion, switching from one emotion to another with a rich and varied vocal. It works. But I find I rarely listen too it now - perhaps it is an underlying harshness to its overall tone, or the slight cynicism towards life that pervades it. The lyrics are thoughtful, and even if her overall outlook on life is not altogether positive, its all the more honest for that. Yet there is an abrasive quality to many of the songs, and that has an effect- this is not an album to relax to, it is not easy listening. The song writing is strong, the musical arrangements are engaging.....yet it sits in my rarely played pile. Youthful vigour carried through the more relaxing sound of [[ASIN:B00005NORA Dear Frustrated Superstar - REPROMOTION] - surely her best - this album eventually grates somewhat, and Year of the Wolf descended into middle-aged mediocrity. Love her early stuff though.

5.0 out of 5 stars a lovely easy-listening album, 14 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a quite different album from all of her later work.Easy going, easy listening, the harmonies and tones of Nerina's soothing voice take you through a whole hour+ of thoughtful themes and fine melodies and ballads. Many of the songs are quite long, but time never drags. This early album is in every way better than all of her later work, and youthful energy carries it all along, outweighing any touches of negativity. It certainly makes for a pleasant and restfull hour of music. There is a lovely slow song near the end, but really there is not a bad song to be found. Worth a speculative purchase, you should not be dissapointed with this. Has to be her best work. Love it!
