Interesting collection of performers in this folk 'super-group'. All excellent fiddlers of course, they have chosen a thoughtful collection of songs I personally found very enjoyable. Maybe more relaxed than some tracks on their various individual albums?

If you like any of the group as solo performers you should buy this album, I'm sure you will like it.

Unlike most moisture meters in this price range this one has a setting for the wood type. It actually makes a big difference choosing a different wood setting so is an important feature.

It's easy to use, though it is also easy to bend the pins when using with hardwood

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Ending for Epic Trilogy, 8 Dec 2012

The final part of the 'Under the North Star' trilogy movies through a difficult part of Finland's history (the ultra-right 'Lapua movement with its fascist sympathies' through reconciliation during two wars with the Soviet Union.

If you are interested in European History this is a brilliant book to read. It explains the context of the 'Winter War' (where Finland was attacked by the Soviet Union) and the 'Continuation War' (where Finland sought to exploit Soviet Weakness to recover lost ground and more) far better than the textbooks.

The trilogy leaves us with a Finland where the old battles seem no longer relevant and the younger generation feel part of a new modern European world.

Brilliantly written and convincingly translated.

In a way, a happy ending. After reading through the three volumes I was very sad to have to finally leave that world behind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Story of Civil War with Modern Resonances, 8 Dec 2012

This is part 2 of a trilogy, oddly part 1 does not appear to be available om Amazon, I purchased my own copy of part 1 in Finland! It is a very well known and widely read work in Finland, now we have an excellent English translation. It is a must-read book for anybody wanting to understand the nature of civil war.

This part deals with the way that tensions come to a head in a Finland impoverished by war as it approaches Independence from a Russia embroiled in its own struggles. The factory owners, land owners and small business men see independence as a way of being free of Russian rule; A significant number of the factory workers, agricultural labourers and tenant farmers see it as an opportunity for freeing themselves from poverty imposed, as they see it, by those factory owners and land owners.

The book details the complex motivations leading to civil war, the grim reality of the war, and the legacy of bitterness resulting from the quasi-judicial revenge meted out with little discrimination by the winning side.

This is very much a human tale based upon recognisable characters that are easy to empathise with, and whose motivations are easy to understand. This book is about a class-based conflict, but the emotions and motivations would be easily recognisable in other conflicts such as those in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Egypt, Syria etc.

Definitely read it, but read part 1 first!

Two very good individual singers blend superbly to deliver a performance much greater than the sum of the parts.

Their style is beguiling; pretty well all the tracks are good, my current preferences being 'Edward on Lough Ernes's shore','Spencer the Rover' and 'Sile' but plenty of others following closely.

This CD is very easy to listen to, quite lovely, it sounds like they thoroughly enjoyed making it.

Eilis Kennedy's voice, when paired with songs that suit it, is achingly lovely in a folksy sort of way, plaintive without being sugary. It isn't fair or accurate to compare with others, but if it was then maybe the closest would be some sort of synthesis of Jackie Oates and Niamh Parsons. The tracks on this album match Eilis's voice perfectly. They range from the sad ('Helen of Kirkconnel') through the poignant ('The Parting Song', 'Farewell to Taravathie'), wryly humorous (Dylan's 'Boots of Spanish Leather', 'Go From My Window') to the celebratory ('Beauty Deas an Oilean').

The CD is well produced with excellent musical arrangements, the guitar accompaniment by William Coulter, in particular, is superb.

Some of the songs are in Irish; the CD has lyrics of these translated into English, this helps enormously, though they would sound good anyway!

If you like quiet traditional songs, beautifully sung in an understated way that allows the songs to speak for themselves, then buy this CD
