This book has made the transition to vegan cooking a pleasure - I'd been worried that going vegan it might mean an end to baking but the deserts are gorgeous and the main meals are full of flavour - well done Isa, my whole family love your recipes!

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful and intriguing, 7 Jan 2014
This review is from: S. (Hardcover)
S is a beautiful object - each of the inserts (even the map on the napkin) are fully realised and occur at exactly the right moment in the narrative to move it on. Even the paper-stock of each individual piece is perfect - the post cards feel like postcards - the newspaper cuttings like newsprint - there has clearly been a lot of love, time and thought in this project.

The narratives, both the 'original' book The Ship of Theseus and the notes interact in an almost musical way around central themes of self, communication, growth and reinvention (to name just a few) as well as introducing tantalising ciphers, who-dunnits and out of sequence revelations that kept me longing to find out who was right.

1.0 out of 5 stars amaturish, 14 Nov 2013

This book was predominantly pictures of the author's wife in poses that range from boudoir to the semi-pornographic. The attitude to women is basically "they let me in their bedrooms, how cool is that!!" and expects you to feel the same way. He even gets the name of body parts wrong (I don't think he actually meant 'photographing the vagina") and the lighting information is very, very basic. Utter waste of money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good quality for the money, 16 May 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
On the positive side the Hahnel is easy to fit, facilitates portrait orientation with an additional shutter button and 4-way controller and allows you use standard aa batteries as an additional power source (always handy if you don't have a charger with you). On the down side the build quality is no where near as impressive as the Nikon. I used the Hahnel for three days of moderate shooting and I found the plastic grip material began to come away leaving a sticky residue along the seam. I expect that this could be quite easily remedied witha bit of super glue but it's a bit annoying when you're out and about and your hand starts to stick to the camera! Also the four-way controller is somewhat wobbly and rough on the finish - it's just not pleasant to the hand the way the Nikon is.

So on the whole it really depends how you're looking to use the grip: for light to moderate use this would be a perfect addition to your kit bag but it's not going to take the kind of use a serious hobbiest or semi-pro would put it through.

The Ultimate Book of Baby Knits
The Ultimate Book of Baby Knits
by Debbie Bliss
Edition: Paperback
Price: 11.89

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect new baby gift, 19 April 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This a lovely well made book that would be a perfect present for a knit-crazy new mum. I say knit-crazy because, to be honest, a lot of the patterns are challenging and the yarns recommended (Debbie Bliss' own) are somewhat on the pricey side. You can substitue for cheeper yarns (I know I did) but you'd have to be confident in your choices so again, probably not ideal for the first time knitter.

If you're a Debbie Bliss fan and already have some of her other books you won't find too much that's new here but it is a very pretty coffee table book and it does create a complete collection so again good present material.

The knits themselves are gorgeous and are firmly in the heirloom category. If you're skilled enough (or patient enough!) to create some of her more complex designs you'll have baby clothes and blankets that will make you happy for years - Debbie is a brilliant designer and if you have a soft spot for 'cute' you'll be in knitted heaven.

Wall Street at War: The Secret Struggle for the Global Economy
Wall Street at War: The Secret Struggle for the Global Economy
by Alexandra Ouroussoff
Edition: Paperback
Price: 12.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat missold, 19 April 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Essentially a dissection of the relationship between the freeform risk taking of the entrepreneurial and the need of the credit raters to quantify that risk for external investors. Wall Street at War casts a somewhat laboured eye over the way the need for a concrete and easily digestible set of metrics twists the behaviours of high value companies into misrepresenting their true worth and investment strategies. Not really related to the financial crisis at all so somewhat missold in my view.

On the whole an interesting read but in all honestly a bit of a lecture. Although short and with some anecdotes my over-riding impression was of reading an extended academic essay rather than a general readership paper-back. If you're studying economics at A-level or first year undergraduate level this might be the perfect book for you but as I'm simply an interested non-specialist it left me a bit cold.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basically brilliant, 8 April 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Vax is compact and easy to use with all the heads stored in the back of the unit. I've tried it all around the house now with the following results:

Windows: Really clean and streak free (a miracle with a small child in the house)
Window frames: The fine nozzle managed to flush dirt out of the small overlaps in the UPVC windows in next to no time. A big improvement on scrubbing.
Upholstery: I tackled an old coffee stain with very good results, there's still a faint mark but still a major improvement.
Grout: Improvement in discoloured areas but not as good as hand scrubbing.
Laminate floors: As good as mop but no better.

I do like the Vax but some how I can't see myself getting it out that often unless there's a specific problem such as the coffee stain. I do like the idea that the unit is sterilising as it goes, allowing you to use fewer chemicals in your cleaning, which may entice me to get it out more often than the results alone would warrant, but I doubt it. I can imagine using it once every couple of months to give the house a complete blitz but that's all.
