5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book., 29 Oct. 2014
A fantastic book. As well as access to all the big stars as well as Pep on a really personal level, Perarnau has managed to record Pep's football philosophy, which he is constantly changing. How each game is tactically deconstructed on a micro level to suit his players and how the opposition strengths are neutralized. Watching football will never be the same again. Thankfully the technical stuff is nicely blended with lots of good stories such as his his meetings with chess master Gary Kasparov. Pep's most surprising quote from the book "Gentlemen, This is Tiquitaca and it is Shit." A book full of wonderful surprises.

Spain: The Inside Story of La Roja's Historic Treble

5.0 out of 5 stars Spain - Graham Hunter, 17 Dec. 2013
Pique is quoted on the front cover saying "Hunter was with us every step of the way" and on this evidence, it is no exaggeration.

Graham Hunter has the most incredible personal access to all the major players, coaches and directors of the Spanish team.

Embedded inside the Spanish team base, he has chronicled on the most intimate level the challenges involved in transforming football's great serial underachievers into the winners of the last three major championships.

The abrasive Aragones era beginning with his decision to change from the Roja's traditional style to the rapid circulation of possession created a storm of controversy which almost cost him his job. It meant no place for iconic captain Raul and for two years he endured a vilification reminiscent of England's Graham Taylor; the Thierry Henry racist slur controversy and finally leaving for the 2008 European championships with the country's jeers ringing in their ears; then the miraculous return as European Champions.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa with gentle Del Bosque now in charge enduring persistent undermining of him by Aragones; the managing of the dire situation of Iniesta's fitness and losing the first game to Switzerland; how Del Bosque transformed them such that after their semi-final performance against the Germans their manager Joachim Low describes them as "the greatest team I have ever seen".

Then the final and, in spite of the thugs of Holland turning the final into a battleground, the team emerge triumphant with the barely fit Iniesta scoring the winner. Spain the great under achievers have learned how to win in any situation.

There are lots of anecdotes like Placido Domingo singing to the team in the dressing room and the Queen of Spain heading unchaperoned for the showers to congratulate the team; Euro 2012, the defence of the title, and the threat of Spain's fantastic team spirit being compromised irreparably by Jose Mourinho deliberately causing conflict between his Madrid players and those of Barcelona; Accusations of "boring brilliance" and finally a triumphant 4-0 hammering of Italy in the final.

What a story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sean Fallon Celtics Iron Man, 22 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an extraordinary book, beautifully written and not just a story about a great football man. The wonderful humanity of Fallon lights up the book.

Irish politics at a personal level. His father fighting for Britain in WW1, coming home wounded to a very mixed reaction but a man of great principle who went on to be the Mayor of his home town of Sligo. Sean himself transcending the petty politics of Irish football by offering to play Internationals for the North. The book details his fine playing career mainly with Celtic, where he cheekily deducted 6 years from his age to make sure they signed him. It is though his partnership as assistant with Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions which marked him out as someone special and the insights and revelations he gives about that time are surprising, debunking lots of myths.

Probably his greatest gift was the ability to see at a very early stage which players would make it and the testimonials from Dalglish, McGrain, McStay, Hay, Macari, Packy Bonner and many many more, mark him out as possibly the greatest talent spotter ever in British football. The love and affection he is held in by these men is a joy in what can be a cynical business.
Sean clearly loved Celtic unconditionally but his natural love of people meant his popularity spread well beyond the East End of Glasgow.

Sullivan has produced a brilliant read and Sean Fallon comes across as smart, tough and altruistic. I loved this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reflections of Lambhill, Possil and Elsewhere, 19 Aug. 2013
I bought this book as a paperback when it was first released. I see the Kindle book now
has a Foreword by Graham Spiers. I am a former resident of Possil (the
Mosshouse) and for me Terry captured the sense of the area perfectly. Full
of surprises, stories I had never heard before and beautifully told. The
Cadder Pit Disaster was particularly poignant. A social history pulled
together with amusing stories of larger than life characters. A great read
for anyone who knew the area and for others an insight to how working class
folk survived the tough times with humour, good nature and community spirit.
Fifty odd great photos. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cycling Revolutionary, 25 Jun. 2013
I am no cycling aficionado but this book by Moore is absolutely fantastic. Only took an interest when the TOUR was on. Then Team GB started to dominate world cycling and Bradley etc in the TOUR and it was obvious something amazing was going on. Brailsford is smart, tough and has integrity. Great read.
