A masterpiece!Cross Jim Henson with David Bowie and you have a receipe for something magical.
I saw this when it first came out in the 80s and was enchanted by it.The settings were incredible and the characters were marvellous.
Sarah does come across as a spoilt brat to start with but you warm to her,and the friends she makes along the way were superb. There were so many little extra touches, you could not afford to be distracted or you would miss them.Jim Henson as always was light years ahead of the game and his passing is truly a great loss for film.Whilst I liked Ludo very much and the old man with the bird on his head were an excellent double act, my favourites had to be Ambrosius and especially Sir Didymus. Utterly fearless, mad as a box of piglets and with no concept of when to give in,he was a star for me.!The film might be a bit scary for the wee ones, but I bought this for my 12 year old niece and I think she will love it, as will others.
The extras were interesting, particularly the interview with David Bowie. He could see the humour of having been "The Laughing Gnome" for 20 years before becoming the Goblin King.

I would like to give this film 5 stars but there is nothing lovable about it.I have been lucky enough to visit both Croatia and Bosnia Herzogovina and this film though filmed in the Czech Republic portrays the country and peoples all too accurately.
It was right to show the war through the eyes not just of the British Officers but of the squaddies themselves. Some of them may have served in Northern Ireland, but this would not have prepared them for the savagery of Bosnia.I was asked once by an Irish colleague how bad it was in Bosnia during the war.I said that from what I had seen, it made Belfast in the 1980s look like a pub fight on a Saturday night by comparison! The film depicts the hate which goes back centuries and the capacity for cruelty is hard to believe in the so called "civilised 20/21st centuries"There were no winners in this war and the British troops as usual did an immensely difficult job with great restraint and care and all credit to them.It speaks volumes about Political attitudes, that soldiers now are now displaying PTSD Symptoms, 20 years after the end of the war and many do not seem to get the help they need and deserve.Watch this film, and realise that when you combine politics with religion along with a dose of bigotry and hate, then you end up with Bosnia and Syria and Iraq.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUMPTUOUS !!!, 21 Jan. 2015
This film is outstanding. It is a film I could watch happily many times and always spot something new that I had not seen previously. The acting was excellent and Scarlett Johansson loses the american accent superbly.I may be totally wrong, but I believe the film was made partly in Luxembourg using bridges from the set also used in Pacino's "Merchant of Venice".The bridges looked just plain wrong.Delft bridges are not like these at all.The effort made to transfer the Market Square in Delft from the 21st century to the 17th century was remarkable.Think of all the road signs and all the bike and bike stands that would have to be removed. This is also about the only film I would happily watch without sound.Every scene seems to create a Dutch masterpiece. The colours are breathtaking and no pains were spared to recreate a Dutch 17th century home.Stunning visuals, excellent acting, and a delight to watch. If you have not been to The Hague, watch the film, go and see the painting at the Mauritshuis gallery, and then watch the film again. It is worth it.

Oh,dear Mr Gibson, whatever did we poor, benighted English ever do to you?First the plus points. The uniforms and weaponry were for the most part accurate. The battle scenes were well portayed as the bloody, messy affairs that they were.BUT!!
Killing 2 red coats at the same time with 2 brown bess muskets, fired on the run is stretching credulity to its limits. It was hard enough for a trained musketeer to hit a standing target at 100 yards, assuming the enemy was being co-operative.
The portrayal of the British command as upper class buffoons is only partly accurate. If the Redcoats had been better reinforced and better supplied, then the War of Independence would have gone the other way.Washington and his generals were in the same position as the US generals in Vietnam, trying to fight a war with politicians meddling and hampering them at every turn.A fact only briefly touched on in the film was that not all the American colonists were on the side of the Revolutionaries. This was as much a civil war as opposed to Britain and the American colonies.Treat this film as a couple of hours of interesting re enactment, but do not treat it as historically accurate.

It is an established Christmas tradition to wrap my Christamas presents and write my cards whilst listening to Kings College Cambridge singing carols.
The songs are lovely and the singing is outstandingly beautiful.Their traditional version of "Oh little town of Bethlehem " is wonderful and moving.
This is Christmas on Cd and not to have the Carols from Kings on Christmas Eve is unthinkable.Long may they continue. This is a quality purchase.

Oh dear, this is what happens when you let the Yanks, particularly Hollywood, loose with an English legend.
Titles start with the Bayeux tapestry.this was about events 130 years previously!
Only an American would travel from Dover to Nottingham via Northumberland and Hadrians wall. It may seem like nit picking but it spoils the film with such glaring errors.
Now the plus side. Morgan Freeman was quality and accurately depicted that the Moors/Arabs were light years ahead when it came to technology and common human decency and tolerance than your average Norman/Saxon.
Alan Rickman and Geraldine Mckewan were a good double act, and Rickman stole, the film IMHO.
For a fiver it was a good buy.

I had heard about this film and was hoping it would be along the lines of the Exorcist.I was very disappointed with this film.I have no time for the excessive blood and gore film, ie Driller killer or the Saw films, but even Omen 1 and 2 were far scarier than this.

A Street Cat Named Bob: How One Man and His Cat Found Hope on the Streets
A Street Cat Named Bob: How One Man and His Cat Found Hope on the Streets
by James Bowen
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.29

5.0 out of 5 stars Purr fection!, 9 Mar. 2014
I was given this book as a present, and I can honestly say, I found it very difficult to put down. The story was beautifully written and for any cat lover, this will be tearing at your heartstrings more than your cat clawing at your furniture !
Utter respect to James Bowen for his candid description of his own problems, and that despite all of these, he still managed to care for a fellow creature, to the point they are inseperable.
Bob is one remarkable cat and I would love to own one like him.I was once asked if I liked cats.My reply was," I dont like cats, I love them" and this book proves it.
If you read no other book this year read this.

I have never seen any of the Harry Potter films, so I was of an open mind regarding Daniel Ratcliffe's acting ability.
He performed superbly, as did the entire cast. The story line was well structured and it was interesting to see the relationship between Kipling and George V.
The setting of the trenches looked convincing, and the scene where the Irish Guards are waiting to go over the top was very well portrayed.
I saw a documentary recently with the last surviving Tommy, Harry Patch who said,"If any man tells you, that when he went over the top, that he was,nt scared,he's a damn liar !The actors playing the Guards certainly looked frightened.
I would urge all politicians to watch this film before deciding to send British men and women on pointless wars which achieve nothing except grieving families.
It would be good if MPs were told that if war is declared, then any of their children of military age would be conscripted and would serve in the front line. That might give them cause to stop and think.
This film should be shown every Remembrance Sunday and is well worth buying.

This is not comedy, this is genius writ LARGE!
Warped humour, fantastic characters and a script that is outstandingly good.
This is an American film with English Humour. Why cant the Yanks produce more like this instead of the usual dross that they serve up?.
Fester is the brother you would want to have, and Gomez is a role model."isnt he a ladykiller?" Acquitted!"
Cristina Ricci steals the show, and her smile on leaving the Happy House, is truly scary.
This is a film to watch time and gain, and if you have not seen it, do so,you will never regret it.
Is it a boy?is it a girl? its an Addams !
