5.0 out of 5 stars Listened because it is in 1001 albums you must hear before you die, 21 May 2012
This album is amazing

So soulful why do all the talented musicians and singer die this mans voice is just amazing like Sam cookes only a slightly more musky I think the word is. the musicans Tackling the music really well too. Really tight it has some classics on it such as the three Sam cooke songs which are equally as good with Otis singing them.

it so gobsmackingly good there is not alot to say about it really. It is just a fantastic album nice Sharp horns and well produced drums and AMAZING vocals too.

stuff you can sing and dance along too Even has a man version fo R.E.S.P.E.C.T

I got this book purely to find out what albums were in it

I think Its pretty darn good Lots of variety and styles Though I think they could have added a few metal bands from the 2000's like Opeth and Dream theater these two bands really have something special about them.

the books is really good and features allsorts of music in it to try, althoguh the 2000's section seems to trail off and only focus on radio type stuff which is fine cos its good stuff but the variety dies down at that point when there is plenty of awesome stuff in the 2000's. Obviously these books are subjective because music is subjective and are designed to get the reader thinking what they would put in a list like this.

my liste would include Opeth, drea mtheater, flower kings. BB king , Canned heat , Free, Scroobius pip and danle sac. barenaked ladies, and a few other but NOT inplace of anything they put in the book I would just increase the number hahaha

I think its very good though it won't appeal to any particular genre purists like Metal heads who only listen to metal for example they would say it sucks. This is for MUSIC lovers not a genre lover.

Plenty of stuff too find and try though so that is why I gave it a 5 stars because it is about as well written and thought out as it possibly could be really
with the 2000's taking a slight dip

3.0 out of 5 stars listened to because is in my special book, 20 May 2012
This review is from: In The Wee Small Hours (Audio CD)
I listened to this album because it is the first album in my 1001 albums you must hear before you die book and I have to say I could have done with out it really It's really quite boring to be honest I like Sinatra's livelier albums
all the songs on this album are slow, ballady type songs with no real hooks just lots of slow crooning vocals.
nice but a bit one dimentional needs a few lively songs to wake you up.
then again it is called the wee small hours sooo I suppose I was expecting it really.

PRetty good but a little bit on the boring side for me

THIS RECORD consists of what pretty much amounts to live improvisations and solos, Of particular in terest is the awesome bass and drum solo called Belly dancers from hell, Its all pretty much improvised live stuff so its is literally a fan only thing but its immense the music is amazing especially when you consider it is all improvised.
It also has a lounge version of baba o reiley which is pretty cool, it also all instrumental too more or less.
and pretty spectacular and brilliant

this album and band sounds something similar to a hybrid of such things as Disturbed and Godsmack and things of that nature

the playing its really tight and heavy and groovy, the drumming is really tight with the bass, and the guitaring while not particularly original although the solo in the first song is actually really original and very cool is energetic and powerful to listen too.
the vocals again are like godsmack but with more sort of disturbed rythmic stylings to it, really good powerful and angry sounding. Its a really fun fun fun album to listen to. highly energetic and excellent debut album

Poor Production aside this Live album is actually pretty spectacular it is not only long it is EPIC it is soo long it is on three discs and its pretty good it has songs from all over their back catalogue though a notable lack of 1985 and 1986 albums.
It has a great song choice and opens up with Tom Sawyer and captures the AMAZING crowd who could teach people from other countries how to be a crowd sure some people might find it annoying but then why the hell did you buy a live album ?
the songs are played really well and performed amazingly, the crowd is so uproarious that YES it does drown out the band a few time but thats Actually so amazing its 60,000 people singing along. and at one point the sing along to an instrumental which is just amazing. The whole album has the most amazing atmosphere. And also did I mention the song selection is just great it features some of their best songs and a few not so best ones hidden gems or rarely played could be the word, it contains an epic drum solo that is more like a medly of practice drumming but is still highly entertaining, and it also has an acoustic version of resist I think it was and the the whole gig ends with the wicked Working man, it just such an epically brilliant album

4.0 out of 5 stars Alright, 29 April 2012
this album is alright and I got the 25,000 limited edition MVI version, its not a bad album there is some really good riffs But the production on the album takes away the energy I feel it makes them feel kind of lazy, so that could have been better also.
Generally speaking it doesn't really sound like any other Rush album so it might come as a bit of a shock to most people most of the instricate instrument playing is missing and it does seem to just plod through.
that said there was a few songs that sounded like traditional rus hbut heavier and darker such as Faithless, the instrumental malignant narcissism is pretty cool too, Over all its not a bad album its just the production gave it a kind of lazy feel however the actual songs are pretty good even if they don't sound like typical rush most of the time its nice to hve a change that is what makes rush so good the fact they don't stay the same any true fan would know that

this album is dark heavy and loud and really quite different to other rush albums it is really quite heavy for a rush album
there are plenty of Riffs and some quite awesome drumming and things, I don't think it was mixed right because it does sound overly loud which ruins it a bit and makes it quite hard to listen too.

not sure what people are moaning about a lack of melody as there is plenty its just the mix of the album has been done all wrong and the change in the musical style is quite abrupt, its a bit messy and hard to hear because of the MIX rather than the songs, the songs are more agressive than most rush music but its quite a astonishing and Exciting change. just a shame about the mix but my review is for the songs, there is good bassing and drumming and guitar all the way through if you just listen carefully, Rush have since said that a new properly mixed version will be released perhaps they should let all the fans who have bought it already get a free copy of the properly mixed version

this album has a less spacious soundscape to it is the first noticeable thing, it is quite like counterparts only with less space and lot more distortion on the guiars and heavier bass, and different drum sounds. That said I think musically its more interesting. its not really basic rock, they try using different rhythmns and structural ideas. the synths are pushed right back but can still be heard if you listen carefully.

I think Driven and test for echo are my two favourites from this album
also the album title and cover are just great both of them are great

this album has the most awesome instrumental in it with the most wickedest bassline ever. It is also the epitome of the straight out rock type stuff they had been leaning towards since Presto, Making it a somewhat basic album However its got some real killer songs on it like nobodies Hero, even though in this day and age the lyrics are a bit cliched and cheesey at the time they wasn't. Animate is one of their best songs from this era its just fantastic. this album is really the most awesome album of this period before the next album and what i feel is another changing period
