3.0 out of 5 stars Too big a splash!, 22 Jun. 2016
The initial album back in the 80s, A Splash of Colour, was rather good, a bit flat production wise but all in all, rather good. This box set would have been far better as a straight C.D reissue. As it is it does not include tracks by The Doctor from the original, and as far as my ears can tell inferior versions of at least two original tracks. As for the "extra" tracks you really are pushing it to make it a 3 CD box set. It's definitely 1 too many and probably 2.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not that good, 1 Aug. 2015

Now this is ok..but the outstanding track is the title track which is 5 stars but the rest of the album is ok. The guy has a great voice that varies between soul and country.
The album starts with the standout track and then fades.. Love letters, The Wanderer and hey baby follow and they are ok if you want more versions of those songs, if you are expecting tracks of the quality of You better move on you might be disappointed..

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine album, 29 Mar. 2015

Love this,, Country blues soul.. by the guy who wrote See you later Alligator along with a number of other well known songs from that era. but whos life seemed dogged by bad luck. He wrote all the songs on this album Small town talk was co written with Ric Danko and a co writer on Grow to Old is Fats Domino so that gives you some idea of the company he was able to keep.
This aint rock and roll its a gentle Country blues/soul album and its a treat unsure about whether to buy then check out Street People or I must be in a good place Now.

5.0 out of 5 stars great compilation, 29 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Rykodisc The Anthology (Audio CD)
I have had this for some time and what a great selection of music on it. Artists I was aware of and Artists that I knew very little about Those I knew little about, suddenly I was looking out CDs by Misfits and The Fire Theft..stuff that I would never have thought about listening to and know do. Interesting stuff by Morphine, Sugar, Golden Smog and Mission of Burma.. Alongside stuff that I already felt comfortable with.. All in all a great compilation that shows the spectrum of Rykodisc..

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning book.., 16 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Remembered for a While (Hardcover)
A wonderful "biography"..something to dip in and out of for years to come.. One error I noticed in the book is under the gigs section ,it states he played Leeds University Student Union on Feb 14th 1970.he didn't play there at all, on Feb 14th 1970 the Who played there and recorded Live at Leeds. A minor quibble and one they say will be addressed in any following editions of the book..

5.0 out of 5 stars A much under rated band, 23 Mar. 2014

Way back when I purchased some of their singles and saw them live but never delved into their album material and for the life of me I cannot remember why.. but at that time their was such a diversity of great music to listen to and to go see..which is why I have only just got around to delving into Family in more depth and what a treat It is.. Ok you have to get use to Roger Chapmans distinctive vocal style but it works it really does.. This album shows a wide range of influences, rock, jazz, folk, R and B, Americana though I dont think that term was in use back then..Family could rock and do justice to gentler stuff as well. They included some great musicians in their ranks and featured instruments such as saxaphone harpsichord flute violin and Vibrophone.. All to great effect.
A great collection...Love it..

3.0 out of 5 stars Just what is Psychedelia?, 28 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Firstly I have to say that this is a bargain, 5 albums in cardboard sleeves that are miniture versions of the original sleeves even listing the music as side one and side two.. So why only 3 stars? because only 3 of the albums could be classed as Psychedelia, the fantastic album by Tomorrow (buy the release with the bonus tracks) and the albums by July.. over rated but psych and the vastly under rated Idle Race. Skeleton and the roundabout is a great track, why did it never chart as a single??
So thats the good which leaves us with The Gods and The Yardbirds. The Gods album is ok ish but linking the tracks with irritating noises does not make is Psych, you will play it once then leave it in its cardboard sleeve as for the Yardbirds album, well Jimmy Page does play on it and it has a couple of decent tracks but thats all, no wonder then that it did not merit a UK release till the early 90s.
So three decent albums equals three stars..

3.0 out of 5 stars deserves better.., 21 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was attracted to this after hearing one track on Facebook, but it seems their albums are not that easy to get hold of, so I settled on this twofer whch comes with very little info and on one or two tracks the sound quality sounds like it was mastered from the original vinyl scratches and all... but even so an interesting album with Worlds end being the better of the two albums as Peoples people gets rather mainstream in places. These albums are though, crying out for a good re issue.. which sadly this is'nt.
