3.0 out of 5 stars Does NOT fit a 32mm rod, 21 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The product description says: "All round floor tool to suit all 32mm rods". Wrong. The diameter of the connector on the head IS 32mm i.e. the same size as a 32mm rod, so it does not fit. Perfect for a 31mm or 30mm rod, but definitely not for a 32mm rod. To be completely fair, it does seem to be good value IF it fits (I've managed to find an adapter at the back of the cupboard under the stairs, so happy days).

5.0 out of 5 stars Seems to do the job perfectly, 20 Jun 2014

Small, light and reliable. Seems ideal for beginners/intermediate, and perhaps also for people at a higher level. Certainly good value for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a patch on Dead Souls, 20 Jun 2014

Taras Bulba is a bit of a clunker compared with Dead Souls and The Cloak. If you skip it you won't be missing much; think Ivanhoe with Cossacks replacing the English and Norman knights. Some good descriptions of life on the steppe though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turgenev is the best, 20 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: On the Eve (Kindle Edition)
Turgenev does frustrated passion better than any other writer I know of. And he packs more into a novella or short story than most writers manage in 500 pages, except possibly Chekhov, although in his stories the passion never really has a chance to get going. Anyway, read this and anything else by Turgenev, although consider carefully which translation you go for. Some are more accurate than others, although perhaps literal-minded accuracy does not always lend itself to the 'spirit' of the writing. Nabakov and others have criticised Contance Garnett for her translations. However, I think there is more feeling in some of her interpretations of Russian writers than in the more literal renderings. As always, it's a matter of taste.

I'll add to this review in future if I get round to it. Just to say if you like Dickens you'll like this. Think Pickwick Papers but without the boring bits. The dead souls 'scam' at the heart of the story is pure Russia. If you think it's too far fetched, do some research into the kind of wheeling and dealing that propped up the Russian economy in the 1990s; smoke and mirrors doesn't do it justice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warm and comfortable, 20 Jun 2014

These do the job in cold weather. I'd recommended them if you suffer from cold ankles or calves. They're substantial but not too bulky, also very soft.

The Benross Christmas Workshop 200 Shadeless Colour Fairy Lights

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, 20 Jun 2014

These worked fine out of the box and lasted throughout Christmas. I'd have liked the bulbs to be a slightly brighter, but that's just personal taste.

This seems to be a good cable, but think twice if you're buying it for a home PC. It is very long and quite heavy. Better to get a 2 metre one if you don't need the length.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 20 Jun 2014

This is not one of my usual rambling reviews. Let's just say I loved it. As with Joyce's Ulysses, which I reviewed recently, this is a much funnier and more accessible book than its 'difficult' reputation would have you believe. The most remarkable elements are not the famous blank or black pages, wiggly lines etc. Above, all this is a book with brilliant, sympathetic and funny characters. In honour of Toby Shandy, if I see a fly in the house I now always try to usher it out of the window rather than trying to swat it: “Go, poor devil, get thee gone. Why should I hurt thee! This world is surely wide enough to hold both thee and me”.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good they're great, 20 Jun 2014

These shows were great in the 60s when I first watched them aged 6 or 7 and they're still great. I still recall the sheer thrill of watching Thunderbirds (sadly not in this set, but shown often on TV over the years) on my parents' black and white TV. Even without colour the excitement generated by the music and the action was terrific. Quite a step up from Andy Pandy, my previous favourite.

It made me laugh recently when I heard a BBC executive say something like "kids today like more jeopardy in their TV viewing than in days gone by". You can't get more jeopardy than in a Gerry Anderson show. For goodness sake, Captain Scarlet actually died at the end of every show, usually in a fire or crushed by a boulder. In Dr Who hardly anyone ever perishes - they're too busy showing they're in touch with their emotions.

One observation from a 21st Century perspective: I think Joe 90's dad would get a call from social services for sending his son out on secret missions against armed and dangerous criminals. Didn't bother me in 1969 though; I still have my Joe 90 membership card somewhere
