5.0 out of 5 stars A new sort of monster story, 7 May 2014

This review is from: Menagerie (Kindle Edition)
Menagerie is the debut novel from film director Evan Marlowe. He and his wife Kerry are familiar to me as the team that released two low-budget horror films, and their short film Smasheroo is part of the 50 Kisses feature film compilation, of which I'm director and executive producer.

The novel is Marlowe's tribute to films like Gremlins, Arachnophobia and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and his story is full of gruesome violence as well as poignant parent-son moments and pointed banter. Marlowe has paid attention to the social commentary that runs through many of the better monster stories and has employed this device as well.

Gomer Horsenick as the curator of a zoo full of wicked monsters is multidimensional. He is not merely out to show off his collection; he's driven by things like fear, revenge, responsibility and possibly scarcity. All this could be heady stuff, but Marlowe keeps the tone light and the action moving along.

I enjoyed the myriad creatures Menagerie introduces, and how Marlowe has grounded them in reality, providing plausible explanations of how they survive in our world, and what makes them deadly. Rather than rehash old legends, he uses these as starting points, and calls his monsters collectively "parafictitious" beings.

Menagerie is a fast and fun read with a cinematic feel. I strongly recommend it to any fan of horror and adventure.

Great insight into what makes a cracking thriller - considered, researched and unlike so many text books wriiten by academics, its both short and accessible. Recommended.

I run IT for a small company and this USB hub managed to crash computers and worked on and off. Unrelaible. I have no problem with cheap IT stuff, I buy loads of it, but this just didnt work from the get go so there is no QC at manufacture. Avoid the brand altogther, nevermind this one item

5.0 out of 5 stars Finnally, a new paradigm!, 10 Dec. 2010
Finally, a new paradigm! Screenwriting in the new millennium

I have read and own many screenwriting books, and all of them have some real value to them. But for some time, I have been looking for something that addresses the sophistication of audiences now. Sure the old models still work, but I was looking for help in telling stories in new ways. And this book Is the new paradigm.

Like Syd Field, McKee, Vogler and Blake Snyder, Linda has produced a revolutionary book that is of its day. . It's a hefty tome, but don't be put off by that as its an easy read too.

Revolutionary, empowering, sophisticated and inspiring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps you find the great story at the heart of what you are doing, 18 Oct. 2009
This is a really great book that does not overwhelm the reader, but helps them through the process of finding the great story at the heart of their documentary.
Clear. Concise. Pragmatic and useful. It's also well structured and thorough. A great tool. Well done Bod (who I have seen in action and he is a legend!)
