Principia (Great Minds Series)
by Sir Isaac Newton
Edition: Paperback
Price: £13.56

5.0 out of 5 stars Newton the Genius., 17 Nov 2013

Like Optics, this is the book that Newton wrote about maths and physics.

It is hard going in places becasue of the language he uses, but fun to read.

Find out directly from the great man what he was discovering.

A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism Volume 1
A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism Volume 1
by James Clerk Maxwell
Edition: Paperback
Price: £17.03

5.0 out of 5 stars Maxwell - A genius., 17 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is Maxwells' work. A complete genius.

It is very hard going in places but he was the man who understood electricity, magentesim, revealed that nature and solved the maths of electromagnetic waves.

So many others (like Einstein) stood on his shoulders.

Anyone who developed colour photography, made clever scientific toys for kids and deliberately electrocuted unwanted visitors (an experiment) cannot be all bad.

Buy it ands read what he said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Newton, 17 Nov 2013

What can you say.

It is the book written by the scientific giant.

It is hard going in places because of the way that he wrote at the time.

Worth reading carefully. Many of the stories about Newton's discoveries in Optiks are not as usually stated. For example, it was well known that white light passing through a prism would create spectrum, he explained it, having purchased a selection of prisms from the market.
Everyone know that there are seven colours in the spectrum - except that anyone creating one using a prism will see that there are not. Newton did not get it wrong - we have got sloppy - Violet for example is not a specrral colour.

It is astonsihing to compare what Newton actually did (real genius) and decribed with what we have misrepresented.

Buy it and get Newton's own words...

This review is from: The Pedant's Return (Hardcover)
A fun read, expecially for us pedants.
This small book has circulated my family and is just plain fun, dealing as it does with things that you think are right but are are wrong and need to be corrected.

After a year you can pick it up again and have a good chuckle as you recall the varios bits.

Modern Groundwater Exploration: Discovering New Water Resources in Consolidated Rocks Using Innovative Hydrogeologic Concepts, Exploration, Drilling, ... and Management Methods (Civil Engineering)
by Robert A. Bisson
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £75.26

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what its says - a series of case studies strung together., 17 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not what it says.
It should be called "A random selection of case studies".

If you want to know about groundwater - buy "introducing Groundwater" by Michael Price.

If you want to know about exploration (which is drilling) and water extraction, but the "bible"
"Drilling - The Manual of Methods, Applications & Management" by the Austarlian Drilling Industry Committee Traing Committee Ltd.
It is big, heavy, well writtem, well illustated and covers everything that is done after geo-surveys (if they are done).

Don't buy Modern Groundwater Exploration without seeing it. unless you want to read about some case studies from different authors that are just complied into a book. The two above are far better.

A Guide to Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing: Advice from Leading Experts in the Field
A Guide to Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing: Advice from Leading Experts in the Field
by Paul Sloane
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.74

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile book - 25 chapters by 25 authors - some good, some not so good, but better that Chesborough's Open Innovation., 17 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is a handy guide to Open Innovation and Crowd Sourcing. \it comprises 25 chapters from from 25 different authors.
This means that the quality & value of the chapters varies a lot.

Open Innovation has been around and in use since at least the 1970s, but it only got a name when Henry Chesbrough observed it in some companies and, as an academic, wrote about it and coiined the name Open Innovation around 2003. Chesborough never uses plain simple English where he can use two or three opaque or obsure words ("Imperative", "paradign", "archiitecture of revenues" and so on). Some of this has rubbed off on some of the authors, but others are doen to earth.

For those of us who have been doing OI for many years, it is easy to spot the authors who are doing it and and the ones who are talking about it.

If you are a tyro (you see, Chesborough - anyone can do it - it meams beginner in learning something) and want to find out about OI then this is not a bad book and a better purchase than Open Innovation by Chesborough who uses 200 pages to say waht could be said in 50.

Most of the book is all about why OI is a jolly good idea, rather than the practical "how".

ff you actually deploy OI or crowd sourcing or want to, the this book is overall not much help. The main exception to this is Chapter 15 by Klaus-Peter Spinnel that gives excellent advice on how to alter thinking and map out problems in such a way that OI is a possible solution. His "Roadblocks to thinking" are superb. For example, the roadblock that "it's pleasant to figure it out for yourself" is a roadblock to remove.

Unfortunately the book is strong on why it is a good idea and what it is all about, but most chapters are of litte practical use if you want to apply OI or Crowd Sourcing to improve your business.

It is worth buying, but be selective about which of the 25 chapters is worth digesting.
