5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 14 April 2014
I like a nice gory horror movie, and this one is one of the best I've seen in ages. It's not particularly scary, but pretty imaginative in the ways that victims are bumped off.

Nice and dramatic house of horrors, neatly tied up by the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Deadful Acting, Great Idea, 14 April 2014
This review is from: Fairytale (Amazon Instant Video)
I watched this thinking it was something else and decided to suffer through the awful acting and give it a chance. A very predictable horror film, some nice gory bits in places and a couple of frights, but you'll have seen it all a million times before.

The subject matter i.e. the story of the scary ghost is actually quite novel (if you've never told scary stories under torchlight in a tent), but they don't make enough use of it.

The acting is pretty shocking. Possibly the most horrific thing of all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly fun for the fainthearted., 14 April 2014
An interesting debut, taking the ghost hunting tv show idea and giving it a spookier twist. It's very predictable and pretty cheesy.. the effects are pretty dodgy too and it's nothing particularly original (think Blair Witch in a psychiatric ward). There is, however, great charm in the way the characters get picked off and no one can deny that being alone in a spooky corridor is always terrifying. Especially when your torch batteries are dying out. The ending is a little off, but over all good fun to munch popcorn too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, 14 April 2014
I was really impressed by this film - set in the 1970s and based on true events, it's a great depiction of poltergeist activity in an urban home and how the family deal with it. The acting and directing are superb and it's pretty tense at times, even for hardened horror viewers. They don't over do the special effects throughout the film which I think helps ground it in reality and make it that much scarier. Sadly they go a bit overboard at the end for my taste so I docked a star for silly effects when an 'invisible' menace had been working so well throughout.

Otherwise, a great british horror and well worth viewing.

1.0 out of 5 stars No climax., 14 April 2014
I'm a fan of Rutger Hauer, so imagine my disappointment when the man blazoned across the cover only appears for about a minute at the start. Another budget movie that hasn't exploited its potential.. the acting is questionable, the direction poor. Nothing really seems to happen.. there's no climax.. a bunch of bad people get bumped off and, once bitten by our vampire hero, burst into dodgy looking flames and vanish.. what? The opening credit sequence also tells the ENTIRE story. Watch the opening credits, bish bash bosh, save 90 minutes of your life.

An awesome collection of the three televised series of The League of Gentlemen, plus the Xmas special and plenty of extras. Excellent value for one of the darkest and driest comedies put out by the BBC.

4.0 out of 5 stars Made my stomach churn..., 14 April 2014
Not so much a sequel as putting the first movie into context.. a car park attendant sexually abused as a child tries to reenact the first sequence with 12 humans.. but you know, without medical equipment, proper facilities and so forth. It's amazing what you can do with a crow-bar and staple gun when you try.

Pretty horrific, gory and with a splash of sexual deviancy (lovely, lovely sandpaper), this car-park attendant does horror movies proud. It's always the quiet ones after all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly Thought Out Confused Film, 14 April 2014
I'm so disappointed. So much potential wasted! This movie does nothing for the Zombie genre. Very obviously a budget film but sadly, lacking enough imagination to make the best of what they had.

It centres around a family who have kept their zombie son after an apocalypse in Ireland, much to the distress of the local community. The film jumps between various points of view; the original documentary, an after-the-fact documentary, the drama all this is going on in and 'zombie vision' which is awful. There is no distinguishing between them in places which leaves the whole thing a bit confusing.

Trying far too hard to be a spatterfest (unsuccessfully), and trying to be as gory and shocking as possible (with no substance or justification). Whilst normally this would work in a mock-umentary style film, the one liners are so badly delivered and the key plot points and story so feeble that it just left me bored. The sound design is also terrible.

I've watched many a Zombie movie and even the worst ones can be commended for their all-out gore-fests and hilarity factor, but this is just dull.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Item, Shame About The Condition It Came In., 20 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ordered this as a gift for someone for Xmas.. it arrived in fairly good time but in an absolutely awful state.
It arrived in it's original packaging, which I'm fine with usually, but on this occasion I really felt it could have done with a bit more protection!

The box was battered and broken with parts of the Briquette Maker exposed. It had clearly been taped up repeatedly and perhaps was a display model or something because the paint is worn/missing at the contact points. The only part of this that annoys me is that a) I wasn't told and b) it's a gift for someone else and I would have liked it to be in perfect condition. That being said I paid a very reasonable price for the item and approve of minimal packaging, so it's a bit of a no-win situation in some ways.

I have to repackage it myself for Xmas day, but the item itself is great, sturdy and well made.
