4.0 out of 5 stars Wacky, weird, exciting, fun and Brilliant!!, 8 Nov. 2008

This review is from: 800 Bullets [DVD] (DVD)
After watching Accion Mutante I seeked the directors other films and found this. Like with Accion Mutante, I'd never heard of this film or director and was very surprised at how great the film was! I don't know how this isn't a cult classic, it's fantastic, very well made, written and full of odd humor. The film follows a young boy who finds that his Dead father worked (and died) at a wild west film set. The boy escapes his strict mother (with her credit cards) and finds his lazy Grandfather still working at the run down film set, now an Audience-empty wild west show. Here he befriends his grandfather and the other zany characters that work there and get drunk every night. Everything goes wrong when the boy's mum shows up and the Grandfather is told the wild west village is going to be knocked down. The fun really starts when the grandfather buys 800 Bullets and begins a cleverly mocking yet twisted spin, of and old western film! The film is genuinly funny and quite childishly entertaining, it has obviously been crafted by people who love westerns and wanted to make one, and in a weird way, they have made one. The plot does go on and on in a never ending mess of ideas and random acts, but that is the style of the film, you never know where it's going but you're happy to go along with the ride and expierence the fun of the journey. For such a great film, it is odd that it's not well-known and if you're wondering if you should buy this but are hesitant because of lack of reviews (like i was), i don't think anyone would be dissapointed. This is an action packed, brilliantly well done, hidden gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark, beautifull, chilling; maybe the best Dracula film?, 8 Nov. 2008
A strong cast (perhaps not performing to their full ability) and a great director, maybe this isn't as good as it should be, but it is beautifull, dark and very gothic. It follows the well-known tale of Dracula, where Dracula (a vampire) traps a lawyer and seeks his lover, later seducing her and all around her before being hunted and faught by Van helsing and others. Some of the scenes are quite incredible, dracula turning into a mount of rats, the three naked woman vampires climbing out of the matress to haunt (and make love) with Dracula's prisoner. The film is visually breath taking and all the many effects are very stylish and imaginative (we not only get vampires but also, werewolfs and other hideous monsters. Gary Oldman makes a very sinister Dracula and all the sets, costumes, etc, are very unique and fantastic. Although the film can get slightly tedious and certain scenes are a bit weak, it's worth watching and highlighting just for the look of the film. Whether it's the best Dracula film ever, it's certainly the most beautifull and exciting. Romantic, bloody, chilling, atmospheric, this isn't for typical horror fans, but a film that anyone can watch and be amazed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good creepy horror, for an entertaining night in., 8 Nov. 2008
This review is from: They [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this on the Amazon market place for 1p, in "good" condition. I enjoyed the film because it was quite different to the stuff that is around today. Instead of being soaked in guts and blood, it plays on your nerves with chills and jumps. The acting isn't bad and the story is entertaining, the creatures are what make this unique, you only ever get flashes of the monsters, you don't really get to see what they are, and this provides some great jumpy moments, for example; there was a great scene when a woman looked down an air vent and we see a dark creature crawling around in the distance, it then suddenly jumps at the screen- the tension is great and the creature is very spooky. Unfortunatly, not all of the film is this good, although having these scares that keep the film exciting, many scenes are a bit weak and the characters aren't developed well enough for you to care much for them. But, if you like this sort of horror, not the gorey stuff, then this is enjoyable and certainly worth 1p.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror at it's very best!, 8 Nov. 2008
I'm a huge Stephen King fan, of his books, and all his film adaptions (there are LOADS). I'm also a fan of Frank Darabont, especially his Stephen King adaptions. Also, i'm a huge horror fan, and so when I heard this was being made (well over a year ago), i couldn't wait to see it! For me this was a dream come true, but I'm not sure how well it will go down with others. It's fantastically well made, the effects are great, the creatures are mostly very original and memorable, the tension and suspence are brilliant and the acting (although I've read reveiws saying the acting ruined the film) was not bad at all, it was very good. I cared for the characters, the creatures were very scary and the religious woman was an incredibly effective villain! The only problem with all this is, although it appealed to me in every possible way, the gore is maybe too much for non-horror fans, the tone (not fun and silly) may be dissapointing for horror fans who want a good laugh, and the ending; far too tragic for many too swallow. The ending was shocking and left you feeling quite hurt, and lots of people have given this great film a bad name by writting how sick and twisted the ending was. These are the people who can't handle a story this horrific (which is kind of understandable), but this HORROR movie does exactly what it should do- be horrible, rather than fun. It's great to see a strong horror film that doesn't depend on extreme gore, naked women or laughs, but instead, tells an amazing story. Still, it's very entertaining, it moves along swiftly, the monsters are always different so you are always amazed at the creatures you see. This film is powerfull, gripping and highly recommended, just be warned before watching the ending, which doesn't make this a bad film, but lets the film do it's job.

The dvd itself is full of special features, you learn all about the effects, the making of, interveiws with King and the film itself in Black and white, which is beautifull by the way, although I do prefer the coloured version (for the sake of the blood and monsters). Ignore bad reviews, this is a great film, just one that might not be to everyone's taste. If you haven't seen it, you're missing out on a great experiance, don't miss it.

4.0 out of 5 stars It just gets Scarier and Scarier..., 3 Nov. 2008
This review is from: Rec [DVD] (DVD)
You start by watching, through the camera, a camera man and a woman reporter, making some kind of documentary about fire fighters. They follow the firefighters who are going to help a woman in an apartment. It just seems like an ordinary, unedited film when suddenly, I won't spoil it, but things get messy. The use of the handheld camera is brilliant, even if we have seen it in "Blair witch" and, more recently, "Cloverfield", it really keeps the tension and you find yourself biting your nails and sitting forward, possibly even looking away, because you can't really see what's going on and then it suddenly jumps out, making you jump or maybe even scream! The ending was so scary! It was disgusting, but you don't really see any gore, it was really just stuff that sends the chills down your spine. So it was a little slow to start, but you start to work out what has happened, but (although some say it's boring) the actionless scenes add to the realism. And when the scary parts do come, they are fast, furious and ,if not that, painfully tense. I still can't get over that ending, that thing walking around in the dark, screeching, sniffing, half naked; It'll be playing over and over in my mind when i try to get to sleep. Ignore it not being in English, the subtitles are worth the effort of reading, because you end up with a horrifying, realistic journey that with scare you, make you jump- It's everything you could want in tense, terrifying horror.

4.0 out of 5 stars OTIS: Not a remake and not bad at all., 30 Sept. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Among the remakes of horror classics and j-horrors are a few hidden gems, one of these is Otis. Otis is a very entertaining film, it's original and unique despite it's spoofing of other horror films such as "Prom night". The story follows Otis, a middle aged man who is loney and bullyed by his older brother. He appears to be your everyday pizza delivery guy, however, he has a thing for kidnapping teenage girls, and faking his own,home-made, prom night. After numerous attempts of kidnapping the perfect date, he finds the right girl. One small problem. Her family isn't goning to just sit back and let it happen. The script is very funny as are the characters who are comically and brilliantly acted and performed. The film is intelligent and hillarious, despite the violence (which there isn't much of). On the disc we get a good making of and a few other bits and bobs, it's generally what you'd expect from a satisfying dvd. The best thing for me about the film is the music, it is jam packed with great songs from start to finnish. I bought this because the trailer looked really good, the trailer is just like the film, and everything was just as good as i'd hoped. If you want to watch a funny tongue-in-cheek, not-to-gorey, horror film that you could watch again, i'd definately recommend Otis. A great horror comedy, worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars PHANTASM: A cult classic!, 30 Sept. 2008
This review is from: Phantasm 5 DVD Box Set [DVD] (DVD)
This is a brilliant boxset. All films are presented on exciting dvds, with fancy menus, the best being the first where you follow phantasm spheres flying around, and the picture and sound quality was suprisingly good seeing as the films started in the late 70's. Each disc is filled with great special features and followed by a bonus disc of even more documantaries on the huge cult success of the series! The films themselves are all great, classic entertainment. Despite the low budget, phantasm 1 is incredibly effective. The atmosphere of phantasm is intensely eerie and will leave you with chills in your spine after you've turned the lights out. As the films go on the special effects improve and increase and so do the explosions and car crashes (there appears to be at least one in every film) and the humor tends to get much funnier. The tall man is a haunting creation, played experly by Angus Scrimm, who can easily sit with other cult horror icons such as freddy and pin head. The dvd box is beautifully designed and well presented, it looks great on the dvd shelf. I would highly recomend this, it is 4 films of fun entertainment on 5 dedicated discs. You couldn't want anymore (unless you're buying the phantasm sphere dvd's, of course).

2.0 out of 5 stars Not terrible!, 3 July 2008
This review is from: Popcorn [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this for 39p and wasn't expecting anything but some silly horror fun. The film was not very well made and the acting was not always good, but it was quite special! The idea is something i've never seen done before and this has all the typical indentites of an old slasher flick as well as paying tribute to old, rubbish b-movies. It was worth watching and certainly worth 39p, if you like old slasher horror and you just want to watch a silly, entertaining movie, i'd recomend Popcorn, although it's not to everyone's taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stephen king heaven! Worth your money!, 16 April 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Im a huge stephen king fan and couldn't wait for this to come out. Not all the stories are horror but most are creepy and tragic. 'Battle ground' was the best and 'the fith quater' was probably the worst. Some episodes are more miss than hit, but always entertaining and there is something for almost everyone. Each episode is quite different, there is some great acting, great special fx and always enjoyable. All in all, this has some really unmissable episodes and a particularly creepy one named 'road virus heads north'. A neat and entertaining series, perhaps the best £25 i ever spent!
