4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect directorial debut for Jaa!, 20 May 2010
Before watching this film I had read a lot of negative reviews on it. Just goes to show that you really should watch and make up your own mind! It is obvious that Tony Jaa put in heart and soul when filming this wonderful creation. From what is visible on screen, it seems that he has gone to a great deal of trouble to invlove as much talent as possible in this epic effort. The camera work is sublime, martial arts choreography astounding, acting performances well above par and the stunt pieces are jaw dropping! If this is his first effort, with creative input behind the lens, then I personally cannot wait to see what he serves up next.
Unfortunately there is a down side- the story, though it seems to flow well, gets a little messy and confusing towards the end. The saving grace though is the immensely gratifying end fight sequence, which takes our minds off the sudden loss of direction in the film. Although the movie would have benefitted from a better ending, those of us who are less concerned about being critics and more concerned with entertainment, will relish this lovingly made tale of martial arts fantasy escapism.
Do not take my word for it though, watch it yourself and make up your own mind, Mr Jaa deserves the benefit of the doubt at the very least!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kung fu cinema as it should be..., 9 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I recently read a review in a magazine I once stocked a lot of faith in, about this film and was shocked by how poorly they rated it. True everybody has a different opinion but I was completely mistified by what the reviewer had claimed about the movie. Firstly, the portrayal of Ip Man by Donnie Yen is absoutley amazing. I can't think of another martial arts actor today who could have pulled off the balance needed for the role as well as what he does. The review I read claimed that he came across as a brutal bully - in the film I saw he seemed to be a very caring and generous individual whose loyalties were shared between his family, friends and students. When he does act with violence in the film it is very much warranted and gives the emotional impact necesssary to make the scenes so memorable and hard edged. After all, there generally will be violence against agressors in martial arts films. What counts is the style in which it is done.
Well done director Wilson Yip on creating another high quality master piece. I for one hope the partnership between him and Donnie continues for a very long time. Must also say kudos to Sammo Hung-nobody choreographs fights like him.
An emotional and dramatic film which deserves high accolade and needs to been seen by the masses.
