I have loved this series and eagerly awaited series 5. This format had all the hallmarks for success in my eyes...the wonderful Brenda Blethyn playing a complex and interesting character, great landscape, moody lighting and haunting music...as well as tight, fast paced scripts and intriguing plots. I have watched series 1-4 many times. However, I have to say that I was disappointed in this series. Why? The moody landscape was missing for the most part (more use of colour and lighting); 'Vera' herself appeared less eccentric and frenetic (which was a great part of her appeal) and I felt Ms Blethyn's performance lacked the passion and pathos of the earlier series. She certainly looked a lot less 'uncared for'....more make-up, neater hair? I have to say I missed the chemistry between her and Joe, and in this series I didn't feel the team melded. The stories themselves were not as complex and interesting as before and the script rather predictable. I still enjoyed watching it but I was a little sad that it had lost its 'edge'...for me at least.

A really interesting account of the days leading up to World War One. The script, leading players and overall production values were all first-rate. It highlighted briliantly the tragedy of the days leading up to the outbreak of war and how it could have been so easily avoided.

Wonderful series.......superb characterisations from all leading actors, complex and interesting story-lines and sub-plots...and the landscape provides the mysterious, sometimes appropriately bleak, backdrop to the series. One of my all time favourites.

3.0 out of 5 stars Did not live up to my expectations given the title ..., 8 July 2014

Did not live up to my expectations given the title and the estimable Mr Jacobi as narrator. Rather pedestrian account of buildings in London with which Dickens was associated. I learned little I didn't already know.

Despite a great cast this film was disappointing. It had little new to say about the period and had arather unbelievable ending. A tad too "romantic" for my taste.

This is very deceptive advertising. To call it a "masterpiece of film making, an epic and absolutely breathtaking" beggars belief. It is slow, poorly scripted and directed, boring and not in any way realistic of the trials of trench life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Below stairs, 7 May 2014

I thoroughly enjoyed this insight into the workings of a great hotel, a "grand old lady", so to speak. Whilst the sheer extravagance and self indulgence of such an institution appalled me on one level, it was interesting to see the high level of professionalism and loyalty in the staff. I suppose pandering to the foibles of the rich and famous is nothing new, it is just a pity that more of us can't experience that wonderful luxury and service. Politics and personal prejudices aside, it is an opulent production worthy of viewing.

Like many people, I suppose I chose this film expecting the same quality of acting, story-line and production quality as Inspector Montalbano. However, except for Luca Zingaretti, there is little to recommend. The subtitles are sub-standard, the plot confusing and slow paced, and many of the characters unconvincing. It failed to capture my attention or interest.

"Public Enemies" offers an insight into the probation service and the pressures the officers and parolees have to endure under the scrutiny of the general public and the ever changing government rulings. The leading roles are acted with genuine empathy and, for the most part, the story line is engaging and realistic. However, the ending is very disappointing....with what I felt was an improbable and unrealistic scenario. This did not detract from my general enjoyment of the drama but it definitely affected the overall impact of the storyline. Anna Friel was excellent and well cast but she was far too intellignet a character to have "fallen" for her client. There had been no indication of such "feelings" until the last 5 minutes of the show. What a pity it had to end that way, as it added nothing valuable to the story.
