4.0 out of 5 stars A delight, 17 Aug. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fashion Victims [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
This isn't the most profound film in the world. Far from it. But then it doesn't pretend to be. It is, however, an absolute delight: warm, funny (sometimes laugh-out loud funny), touching and occasionally even subtle. Thoroughly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Depressing, cliched and shallow, 9 Aug. 2009
This review is from: The Gay Divorcee (Paperback)
I do not understand why this book has been so warmly reviewed. The characters are one-dimensional, the prose style cliched and pedestrian, and the plot completely predictable. In its favour? Well, it doesn't take long to read and it is an accurate depiction of a very narrow segment of gay life. It is, however, a profoundly depressing read. This is partly because of its lack of literary merit but mainly because of the vacuous and superficial world it portrays. Did we really fight for this? I wouldn't mind if the narrative voice suggested some kind of critical perspective but then that would be asking for skills that the author simply doesn't possess. For what it's worth, I know that I am not alone in thinking this: the book was read by my local lesbian and gay reading group last month and was slated by the dozen or so people who attended and who'd had the misfortune to read it. If you want a light holiday read, try "My Lucky Star" by Joe Keenan - it has a lightness of touch, wit and panache that this book completely lacks.

This is without doubt Patrick Wolf's most ambitious, accomplished and impressive album to date. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A profoundly moving bigraphy, 15 Mar. 2009
Apart from 'The Go-Between' - and, to a lesser extent, the Eustace and Hilda trilogy and 'The Hireling, - LP Hartley is an unfairly neglected writer these days. I for one would love to see an enterprising publisher reprint his 1949 novel 'The Boat', by some accounts an underrated masterpiece, and 'The Brickfield' together with its sequel 'The Betrayal'. It is a shame that this biography, originally published in hardback in 1996, did not rekindle greater interest in Hartley's work. It remains, however, a compellingly readable and profoundly moving account of the life of an ultimately sad and disappointed man. I cannot recommend this biography highly enough; it is easily one of the best that I have read in the last decade or so.

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!, 11 Jan. 2009
What a combination - Brandon, Elton & Neil! What isn't there to like? Give me this any day over Alexandra's massacre of Hallelujah for a Christmas No. 1.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brave and mostly successful, 11 Jan. 2009
I was lucky enough to be at the London Palladium the night this DVD was filmed. As a long-time lover of the music of both Judy and Rufus, it was a night I wasn't going to miss. The show was great. Rufus, especially on the quieter numbers, was breathtaking. And the band was just amazing. This DVD is a great memento of a wonderful night but also stands up in its own right for people who weren't able to be there themselves.
