4.0 out of 5 stars fascinating for the specialist, 6 Mar 2014

I use this booka lot as it has essential material for me; It's in translation so the style is a bit turgid. But often the stories are fascinating and it is really the only somewhat-modern book to trat this material.

At Some Disputed Barricade (World War One Novel 4)
by Anne Perry
Edition: Paperback
Price: 7.35

3.0 out of 5 stars over-written, 6 Mar 2014

The series is frustating: there is much that is really good, and sometimes pwerful. She has a feelf or the period that rings true, if only in arrow social class perpsective. But she grossly over-writes,belaboring every point until I could tear out my hair. Each book could be 2/3 its actual length. Some autghors never figure out that less is more!

Beguilement: 1 (Sharing Knife)
Beguilement: 1 (Sharing Knife)
by Lois McMaster Bujold
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as the Miles Vorsogigan series, 8 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In Miles Vorkosigan, Lois McMaster Bujold created a once-in-a-career character, a Harry Potter for grown-ups [or not-quite grown ups, like me:-) ]

I found the Beguilement books too romantic, rather long-winded, and lacking in the edge of humour I loved in the Miles books.

5.0 out of 5 stars part of the feminist canon, 8 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Stepford Wives [DVD] (DVD)
This was a film that changed much for feminsts.

Stepford is a community frozen in a "perfect" 1950s, USA-style. Men go to wortk and bring home the money. Woman stay at hime, keep house, and bring up the kids. The women are always perfectly turned-out when their husbands get home; dinner is ready, the slippers are warm. The women are ready for sex whenever their husbands require it.

Until a new couple arrive... and we begin to see the darkness behind the perfection.

There is much wrong with this film and many feminists abhorred it when it was made; but for its time it was a breakthrough. It is very interesting to me that it has always been difficult to obtain. I don't know it was ever shown at UK cinemas.

There was a "remake" in maybe about 2000, but it was a very shoddy mimicing that lost the serious point the film was making completely.

Kil'n People
Kil'n People

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant!, 8 Mar 2013

This review is from: Kil'n People (Paperback)
An extraordinary book. I like everything David Brin writes, but this is one of the best. A unique science fictional 'world' that allows a fast-moving plot and plenty of action, while still allowing the reader to respond to "characters" (you have to read the book to see why I use quote marks there) with a range of credible emotions and yet have some real laughs.
