5.0 out of 5 stars Transition Town Movement: Started in Totnes, Devon 2006 now in over 460 locations worldwide, 16 Oct 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Transition Town Movement started in 2006 in Totnes which is an ancient market town in Devon, England. The movement has spread to 460 locations in 43 countries worldwide. Each location has an, "Energy descent action plan" to wean the area off fossil- fuels. The local transition group also organises frequent movie nights, public lectures and discussions as well as street festivals to celebrate each landmark toward greater sustainability. The idea is to get local people to be the area's connective tissue so that in times of stress people are not forgotten about. For example elderly people in heat-waves, storms or floods. Opening up spaces like City Halls for participatory democracy with neighbours who have never met before creates an intimacy to get things done like securing food supplies and building sturdy sea-walls. Divesting money in fossil fuel companies and passing anti-fracking ordinances have also been achieved. For more information: Buy this book and read it. Also - https://www.transitionnetwork.org

5.0 out of 5 stars Socialism for the RIch, 22 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Socialism is a dirty word for the right-wing free marketeers. This book tells you how those same people profit from the state but are reluctant to give to the state... Britain's wealthy elite have effectively ceased to pay their taxes. Owen points out that this is, "Socialism for the RIch" ........ that should annoy the scroungers! He points out the revolving-door-system between Media-Politics-Business through vehicles like secondments and introduced me to the power of non-elected think-tanks in being able to change the British public's opinion....He also challenges the BBC as being an outlet that is staunchly pro-business, biased towards right-wing voices and acts as a consultant platform for Establishments perspectives. You need to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nuclear testing damaged the Ozone layer, 3 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you want to get into the minds of the military this is recommended reading. It might be worth noting that accidents are much more common in countries like India, Pakistan, Iran etc and that the threat of a nuclear accident has increased due to nuclear proliferation.
