Having collected many books on American history for the past 40 years, I do have some knowledge of the Minnesota massacres. This book is written in the form of a novel, but the characters are real and what happened to them is also true. My main problem with the book is that it is one sided. The author tells in graphic detail all the atrocities that were committed by the Sioux, but fails to mention that they were robbed of their lands, cheated out of their government rations by unscrupulous Indian agents and in some cases left to starve. One agent called Merryk said that if they were starving then let them eat grass. All past wrongs errupted in an orgy of violence with the massacres. The author's continual graphic descriptions of multiple rape of white female victims is hard to stomach. Yes, it went on, but with most tribes it was of what had been done to Indian women by whites. I am not defending the Indians for what they did, but there are two sides to the story. This book will be hard going for some

4.0 out of 5 stars The Big Gundown. ( a rare chance to see this movie in English ), 21 July 2014

This well made and exciting spaghetti western, has Lee Van Cleef chasing a suspect across Mexico for the rape and murder of a 12 year old girl. Director Sergio Sollima gives his characters some depth instead of the usual one dimensional types. The movie has been generally well received by the critics over the years, some saying it is one of the finest of the genre. It has never been shown on British tv until recently on sky tcm channel. Never been released on home video either. DVD versions have been in Italian or German with subtitles. With this version I have been lucky. I purchased it through Amazon and it came from Japan. It is in English with Japanese subtitles which is fine. Picture quality and sound are good. A bit expensive at £21 but there are two other westerns by Sergio Sollima on the disc although they do lack the presence of Van Cleef. If you enjoy a good well made spaghetti western, then the Big Gundown is a must see.

This book was not an easy read for me as I know the author. Her husband's parents have been good friends of mine for many years. The terrible ordeal that she and her family went through makes shocking reading. The intrusive thoughts, constant cleaning, depression to the depths of despair and suicidal thoughts. How she coped with it and fought back is a real inspiration to anyone else who suffers from this awful condition. I admire her courage and determination for dealing with it and coping with it. This book is a must read for all sufferers of OCD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Woman of Courage, 4 July 2014

Fanny Kelly was part of small emigrant train in 1864, when her small party was attacked. Most were murdered, but she taken captive by the Sioux Indians. She was constantly threatened with death, and forced to travel with the tribe. How she managed to survive becoming medicine woman to the chief and learning their language, and eventually being held in high esteem by them, is a remarkable story. I found it hard to put the book down.

A very poor app that I cannot give much of a rating for. Most times that I try to use it, it does not respond on my kindle fire.

When reading this honest and excellent narrative you can barely begin to imagine the kind of terror that those poor children had to endure at the hands of the Indians. The scene of massacre which they witnessed would no doubt scar many for life. This young woman stood firm through it all. Compelling stuff.

To read this book is like having a guided tour of Brazil and the Amazon with a bit of adventure thrown. A great book for kids although they might find some of the narrative a bit dated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Subaltern on the Somme, 10 Jun 2014

This book is so well written that you get a clear picture of the Somme and what the daily routine was like for the men in the trenches. The author's keen eye describes the mud, the constant shelling and ever present fear of death, the food, the snipers, the rats, tripping over bodies that lie about everywhere. Although an officer himself, he is not above criticizing other officers if they appear foolish or lazy. This is an honest tale of one man's war. My verdict: well worth a five star rating.

Generally, a good adaption of the book with splendid performances by all, particularly Colin Firth It was harrowing in places, but even so very watchable. I would have given it five stars but they changed the ending from the book, so it fell a little short of being excellent for me.
